My uncle got in trouble by his association because he had an oil spot on his drive way. He had 15 days to get rid of it or else they were going to hire professionals to remove it and bill him.
A lot of places have the no street parking after 2am rule. Most only enforce it during the winter so the snow plows can do thier job properly. Some enforce it to be assholes.
They cannot restrict satelite dishes on property your own. Only if its in a Historic district, and even then you are only required to attempt to keep it out of sight.Quote:

In a legal sense? Well, upon moving into a neighborhood, etc that has one, you typically have to sign the paperwork saying that you agree with their regulations. Depending on the neighborhood, the dues can vary as well. In one neighborhood we lived in a while back, the dues were like $25-30 a year--basically enough to cover cutting grass on the medians and maintaining the streets every now and then. In some swankier areas, where there is a lot of landscaping, and "amenities" to cover, they can be up to a few $100 a month. A gated neighborhood also has to maintain its own roads (resurfacing, etc).
Personally, I am going to do everything I can to live in a neighborhood that doesn't have an HOA. There are a lot of ridiculous rules, such as you not being able to park in the street, not to park a commercial vehicle in your driveway (have a private company and commute in your work truck? That sucks), or to not have your garage door open unless you're entering/exiting your garage.
Wikipedia says "Since 1964, homeowners' associations have become increasingly common in the USA. The Community Associations Institute trade association estimated that HOAs governed 23 million American homes and 57 million residents in 2006.[3]"
If I ever move into one of these neighborhoods, I'm purchasing a firearm.

It has zero effect on property values, because home owner associations only really exist here in condos. Property in PR is at a premium due to limited space, and the bank doesn't take your neighbor's yard into account when your house is appraised. I've bought two houses here so far, and neighbors were never mentioned once. It's a non-factor here.Quote:
