Basically, yeah.
It warrants a better explanation than that. Hell, a simple janitor caught on to the hoax almost immediately. The guy never finished 9th grade. The people involved with this and the related incidents are not unlike a lot of people who profess to be good, law abiding citizens. The more upright you think you are, the more you let fearmongering and perceived authority manipulate you.
Sorry to make the reference, FX, but soldiers are a perfect example of this. The perception is that soldiers take orders from their superiors because they see themselves as objects of a just organization, and because they fear isolation and even court martial, many are capable of killing children, defenseless women and unarmed men and still keep the self image of a moral human being. Not all, of course, but certainly enough to see what we've seen in news reports.
The guy was using power, communication, and biology against people. As much as it's fun to sit here and say, "I wouldn't do that shit!" you don't know until you're put in the situation.
Biology?
Anyway, yeah, I read the articles, and it's pretty disturbing stuff. When you look at the psychology behind it, and how it's actually not even that hard to get naive people to agree to these outlandish requests if you start small, maintain an authoritative tone, and say just the right things.
Biology in that there's some 40 year old guy sitting there with a completely naked 18 year old girl in front of him. I'm sure logic was turned off at that point, and what little was still there was overridden by the guy on the other end of the phone giving him complete permission.
I remember the final incident, but I had no idea there were so many more.
It's amazing that this woman was pretty much raped and recieved 5 million when she sued, but that woman who sued Madison Square Garden because she got called a bitch got 11 million.
Also amazing that the stupid fucking woman that kept the girl there and fucking facilitated this rape also sued and is now a millionaire. WTF.
And don't forget the perpetrator was acquitted of all charges (I think... may have misread that, but it wouldn't surprise me).
The trial is still yet to conclude. The biggest charge against him is impersonating a police officer.
I bet finding that dude's house with all that police shit in it was like Christmas for that detective.
Ah, why did he think he was acquitted? Anyway, I don't see why this guy can't be charged with the actual crimes, similar to how Charlie Manson was held responsible for the murders committed by his followers.
