PS2 s SOOO bad it put me in a depression! MGS2/DMC/GT3 all huge disappointments!

I have owned a ps2 for about a week now

I REALLY wanted to buy a Ps2
there were tons of KILLER games I was drooling to play
I spent a few months not buying any xbox/DC games to save for a ps2

and I bought it .....
DAMN, now I wish I listened to EThugg

I Somewhat enjoyed GT2 on psx, I nearly completely beat that game
there were some HUGE GLARING flaws, but I was able to endure them & enjoy most of th game

I thought GT3 SURELY MUST have fixed them
less cars & less tracks weren't a problem since there was still a lot I FIRST THOUGHT
...and the graphics looked amazing from the screens& from the sites talking about it

DAMN, after playing I WANTED TO RETURN GT3 & MY PS2 IMMEDIATELY
it was THAT DAMN BAD!!!!!!!!
I can't believe how much they dropped the ball on that game


then I rented DMC, thinking it would be the best action game of all time
especially after some you your comments on this board
I was disappointed at first but learned how to play right later on
even still it was a O.K. action game, some nice moves, if not sluggish on some of them
the camera wasn't horrible but it hindered the gameplay enough
the graphics looked like a 60fps Dreamcast game with some very good effects & maybe some SLIGHTLY better character models
the biggest beef I had is the completely unbalanced hard difficultly



I JUST rented MGS2 just a few hours ago
MGS1 on psx was m FAV game ever on psx
I was REALLY excited & ...when I played it, it just didn't wow or amaze me
something didn't seem right
so far it's pretty good (I'm still at the tanker level)
level design/presentation looks like it took a dive though & I hear nothing BUT BAD THINGS after the tanker level

I remember drooling over the videos but now actually playing it, it feels...kinda empty


GOD I HOPE FFX & GTA3 aren't going to be this disappointing or else I might comitt suicide

FFX isn't bad. I was expecting nothing big, so I'm pretty happy with what it really is. DMC is okay, but not what people were making it out to be. I didn't like GTA3. I understand how you feel - I got a PS2 not too long ago and already all these 'killer apps' turn out to be games that are okay to good, but nothing outstanding.

Despair, there's a difference between challenging & PURE frustration

at the start of the game it's challenging, by the 1st boss, it's complete & Utter frustration
dying 50 times in you 1st try IS frustrating difficulty

and again MGS2 isn't bad, but I had dreams about playing this game before
i was literally drooling over it, & when I played it....well so far it's o.k, pretty good but not mesmorizing (maybe it's too early judge though)

I really thought that these games would be mind-blowing, but noting so far, that the reason I ot a ps2


Ico looks amazing, but I keep hearing you can beat it in under 4 hours & theres not any replay to actually buy it if you rent it
seems like it's probably goning to be just a rental game for me

Maximo looks alright I guess, I was never really hyped on playing it though

If it's not one thing, it's another. I only complain about game difficulty if it's that way through lazy programmers (or those who have had their time schedule cut short, it's not always their fault) which creates cheap as hell enemies or sets up the game so that you pretty have to get hurt and there's no way around it. I hate that crap, and DMC didn't have that. In any real amount, anyway. It did have a slight controller lag in many motions, and used cheapness through off-screen tactics (which you have heard me complain about), but Hard mode simply uses less, tougher enemies, so it's actually more balanced then Normal. Well, I do have a complaint about the huge amounts of damage that get dealt out to Dante, but that simply helps harken back to the days of one or two hit kills. If only the camera harkened back to the days of being able to see as well.

As for GT3, I could've told you that. As could many people here, the game simply isn't all that. Or really much of anything besides a really pretty GT, which some of us got done playing years ago.

I'd say FFX is also crap, but I'm among the minority about that here, a lot of other people liked it. So long as you don't mind controlling a whiny, annoying little bitch that has no clue how to dress himself or what "colors" are, or are just fine with dealing with hysterical plot developments, bad transitions, complete lack of logic, poorly written characters, DC-level character models (which isn't nessecarily a bad thing, but many people expect something more) around the same decency as DMC's characters, lots of horrid design (FFVIII is leagues beyond this game in terms of design, and that's got to be the oddest looking FF yet), really bad body language, the stupidest ideas in any RPG ever for hiding weapons, pathetic pacing, and general silliness, you'll be just fine. However, it does have a great battle system, and some awesome boss battles. Not that you'll be fighting a wide variety of enemies, but still.

GTA3 shouldn't disappoint so long as you accept it for what it is beforehand: a game where you drive cars and shoot people. That's the entire game right there, and it executes it wonderfully, just don't expect anything else and it'll be your godsend.

Oh, and go for Maximo. Actually, you had trouble with DMC difficulty, nevermind. Maybe Way of the Samurai or VF4 would be more up your alley?

I'm just amused that you think PS2 games are supposed to look much better than DC games.

Well, I dont remember Phantom to be very difficult, or frustrating, even in DMD mode. He actually can be beaten easily, doging his shots, and hitting him before he shoots at you, making him swallow his own attack :) Just dont run around colums too much, and you should be fine. If you always stay in the front plane, you will be able to see him, and camera not going to change the view.

DJ had no problems beating him after couple of times. All you need is little practice and some patience.

ICO is very cool game. Sure its not very long, but since it goes for $20 nowdays, its a good deal.

FFX is fun rpg, and I'm currently playing it as well.

GTA 3 is the number one reason to own a PS2.

My second favorite PS2 game is Way of the Samurai but it's not for everyone.

hmmm andy787, I only bashed ps2 when it launched with all those lies ps2 fanboys/sony was throwing out there

the system push's 80 million polys compared to the 3 million DC push's
the system is better then DC because it can play DVDs
it's bette then DC because of it's killer game line up such as 0 Story, Driving Emotion etc..

after all the hype settled down I really didn't bash it much

To me Sega Dreamcast and Playstation 2 are more like complimentary systems. This is coming from someone who ran a Sega board for 2+ years and ran a Sega site and owns 40+ DC games and someone who doesn't hate Sony. The Sega Dreamcast's didn't have that many action pack type games such as Devil May Cry while the Playstation 2 lacks in 2D fighters and 2D games overall. The Sega Dreamcast has a lot of arcade games which are fun, but some can get old real quick, while the PS2 has a lot more of those longer lasting/longer to beat type games. To me having a Sega Dreamcast and a PS2 is a great way to go, you have your action games, wrestling games, fighting games, shooting games, arcade games, puzzle games, RPGs, etc. What DC lacks the PS2 fills in and vice versa.

Granted, the boss can be a pain because of the camera(It's the only place I died in the game) but if you have problems anywhere else in the game, sorry man thats sad(I'm talking normal mode here). Keep in mind I'm just commenting on the difficulty, I didn't find the game all that great either.

This was your big mistake. Thinking that for any of the three current systems or any game ever made for that matter will always fuck you.


Anyway you should rent Baldur's Gate. It's one of the few PS2 games to have great gameplay and stunning graphics(I'm really surprised this game looks so good since it kicks the crap out of what all the big name developers have done graphically[It litterally starts out pretty damn nice and just gets better and better])at the same time.

Well this should be a lesson to you to know what your getting into instead of assuming your fantasies would become reality.

Well the PS2 has plenty of good games, and it sounds like you have played like 3 or 4 games, when there are maybe 175 (or more not sure) games for the PS2. Games like Ico, GTA3, Rez, Time Crisis 2, Super Bust-A-Move, Mad Mestro, Hot Shots Golf 3, and many other make the system worth owning. You could probably beat Ico in 4 hours after a first run through. Buts its an gaming experiance unlike any other game before it. PS2 has several great looking games coming out. Sure it does not have the graphical power that GC or Xbox has, but its got a lot of really sweet exclusives and the like coming for it. Just because 3 games you played where not what you hoped they were going to be does not me there other games on it that you may like. Even EThugg has admitted that there are plenty of good games out and games he wants for PS2, he made a list of like 200 hundred games. So if you insist on listening to EThugg, listen closer I guess.

Not to knock his gaming skills, but I agree. DMC was a cakewalk. We beat Normal in one sitting, and Hard (or whatever it's called) in 2 days.

Acctually, Black Isle is a pretty big name developer/publisher.....albeit on the PC front.

But I agree (again). BG: Dark Alliance is a very well-done game. Great graphics, incredible music/sound effects, and addicting-as-hell gameplay. 2-player is fun as hell, and the replay value is pretty high (trying to max out your characters, finding/buying all the best items, etc). It's a short game (beat it in one sitting), but again--it has good replay value. I wouldn't pay more than $30 for it, though, if you can find it that cheap.

But it shall be 4 hours of gaming you'll never forget, an experience like no other (except maybe PDS). It's that damn good. And you'll want to buy it so you can show it off to all your friends, and so you can replay it every so often to re-live it's magic. :)

Even though I would recommend getting Ico, I didn't find it unforgettable in any way.... it's an AVERAGE adventure game....

I couldn't get into ICO either. I didn't get very far, and then I just stopped playing it. Haven't thought about it since actually.

WTFer, get FFX and GTA3 ASAP. These alone justify the price of the PS2, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a poopyhead. :p

yes, I agree; system bashing is futile, and doesn't belong at a message board. If you didn't like the PS2, fine, but don't overly bash it because of it. Oh, and is the reason you're sick of MGS2 because of zidane? He can do that to ya. That's why I don't like the game so much; not because it's a piece of crap in DVD form, but he praises it every single damn day!! His room is 100% MGS2 stuff, from posters of Kojima to a jukebox that plays the intro theme. Sick I tell ya, sick!!

the system is worth buying for Namco games alone. that's why i got mine.

My PS2 problem is a little different. I really don't want one, but I feel DDR Max and Drum Mania pulling me over......

DDR Max was good, but I just couldn't get into Drummania. I felt that Konami has played out the whole "music" genre to no extent. It's getting to feel a little like the FF way of making games(1 every 3 months:p )

Sorry, but music/rythm games is just not my cup of tea. Not to say they are bad or anything, but no thanks :)

Well, DDR is the only Bemani game I've ever played, so the whole music scene isn't exactly played out for me. I don't think I'll ever get tired of DDR anyway, and Drum Mania looks very interesting. My housemate is a great drummer and we keep a real kit (or two :p) in our house. It's just so much fun playing that thing that I'm dyin' to test out my new drumming skills in video game form. :)

I liked MGS2, the biggest complaint I had about it was the lengthy cut scenes and the ending was a bit weird.

If you liked GT2 how is it you hate GT3 so much, I had GT2 and I can say GT3 is a huge improvement over GT2, I liked the original GT better then GT2, the only thing I cared about in GT2 was the rally racing.

I like my PS2, it has much more games I care about then any other system right now plus with games like Sky Gunner, Suikoden III, Breath of Fire V, Shinobi, Star Ocean 3, Kingdom Hearts and Growlanser II & III just to name a few coming out it will get more of my playing time that's for sure :)

Well I got the system for games like Onimusha and DMC and I must say that DMC is possibly the greatest 3-d action game ever created. Yes it was difficult and I died many times, but I found myself replaying it over and over just to beat the harder mode (though I still haven't beaten DMD mode...soon though...). PS2 is poised to further dominate the gaming industry w/amazing games coming our way...and there are many outstanding games as it is. I'm sorry you don't like it, but that's fine...just trade it in and get something you like better...

Why compare it to DC? Like someone else said, the two are complementary...they have very different games and owning both is the best way to go...

I'm assuming you aren't serious, but if you are, the PS2 definitely isn't worth commiting suicide over. I can understand that so far the games have disappointed you, but there are still other games to try. Keep renting games and you may find something you like. Also, the system hasn't retired yet so there still may be games comming later that might interest you.

So if you look and you still can't find anything you can buy games for your other systems while you wait. So don't let it get you down, make the best of the situation.

werewolf, I like GT2 over Gt3 for some notable reasons:

-there is more races, BUT there is less tracks
-money/winning cars takes MUCH longer to win then in GT2
-15 tracks were taken out from GT2, which leads directly to the 1st two complaints...
more races & having to race more to win cars WITH less tracks gets MUCH more repetitive then GT2

& for that matter they took out some of the best tracks & keep some of the bland ones

I have more problems with it but those are the biggest...

I LOVED the taker part, I just didn't play it enough to appreciate it!

...and now I'm HATE MGS2 with a passion ever since I stated to control raiden
MY GOD during the radien part I must have literally had control of him for 3 minutes & at the same time spent 40 minutes of codec scenes!

Not really though buddy.........seriously, the Raiden part is the turning point of the game story wise, so obviously a lot of explanation is needed. If somehow you don't like MGS2 because of Raiden, may I suggest MGS2:Substance? It gives you the chance to play as Snake for the whole game,or as Raiden for the whole game(which I bet only 2 people will play; me and Kojima ^_^), plus a TON of new content(VR Missions, extra play modes and secrets,etc).

P.S. I hate you for dissing MGS2!!!!!Seriously, I get offended when people bash this game. Don't ever do it again!!!!(and if you do, please do it with proper grammar; "now, I'm HATE MGS2" doesn't flow smoothly. Just a tip).

Black Isle published the game, but it was developed by Snowblind, who are actually pretty small. See, Black Isle makes really good games, not crappy 6 hour Diablo clones.
