Yeah, that's bullshit.
That said, I see Shatner's ego certainly hasn't decreased with age...

I don't really see that comment as egotistical. He's right. The entire foundation of his career is based on the Captain Kirk character. Not including the original Captain in the new movie may very well turn away fans of the franchise.
But fans of the Star Trek franchise are the reason there's a reboot movie coming down the pipe in the first place. They haven't been supporting the newer Star Trek material (for good reason IMO). They need to attract new fans and more of them. I'm a little confused as to why they're including Nimoy but not Shatner, though. It seems like all or none would be the best way to go here.
I want to see the new take on the universe.
The producers probably don't want the new Kirk directly competing with the original Kirk for the viewer's acceptance. It's still impossible for most people to imagine anyone else as James T. Kirk.
There is also the fact that everyone who has ever worked with William Shatner thinks he's an insufferable douchebag.
And there's really no way to make it work from a plot standpoint without first doing a movie about Kirk coming back from the dead.
Who gives a fuck. It probably had more to do with trying to lend some integrity to an already dead franchise that they're trying to reinvent for a new generation anyway. You can't do that by taking a step backwards. Nobody gives a fuck if he didn't get a 2 minute cameo or some priceline investigator nonsense in the movie. Not like I'm gonna see it anyway, but even I can see why they went this route. He's just mad cuz he's not able to eat off of this since he thinks that he deserves a free dollar everytime Star trek is mentioned.
I want to see Sylar as Spock. That's actually the only thing that interests me about it right now. Abrams is a good director too.

I'm not that big of a Trek fan, but I am interested in seeing what they do with the remake.
Finding a reason to include Shatner in this would be kind of silly, and ruin whatever "going out with a bang" type death he had in that Next Generation flick. If he really cared that much about the character, he would've lost weight for all the previous old-Trek movies and got better hair-pieces so he wouldn't look like "Future TJ Hooker" and more like an older Kirk.
