Well that's why it's 76 and not a lot higher like many would like it to be.
I think the sentimentality over a lot of so-so 16-bit RPGs is just as bullshit, frankly. It's not like FF6 is still an amazing game or anything.

Some people didn't have the mental acumen to read good books; for them there was FF7. Sure the themes and concepts it lifted were buried under a mountain of f-chan bullshit, but if you'd never read a book before the story would still probably be compelling.
The only I can still enjoy about FF7 is Barret, though Aeris dying in primitive polygons is good for a laugh.
The main reason FF7 is beloved is because it's the first RPG a lot of people played. Everyone remembers their first RPG fondly. I know people that love Final Fantasy Mystic Quest because it was their first RPG.
If you look at the sales for Chrono Trigger and FF4, no one played those. They didn't sell 1/20th of what FF7 did. FF7 is loved because it seemed new to people since it was previously a nerdy hardcore genre.
I liked the music in FF4, 6, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger. Quite a bit actually. In fact, most of the games I remeber from my childhood days are linked to thier music.
It entertained me dammit.
You were either a small child, a total noob, or experiencing temporary brain damage, then.
Option 3 it is I guess.
Maybe that's why I like C64 and Amiga games so much. Even mediocre titles often had absolutely fantastic music.
OMG! RE: NHL '94.

More added. How the fuck is Smash Bros. above VF4 and Halo above Deus Ex? Amazing.
LAN Hang 'em High > Deus Ex
SSBM is an odd beast, but has arguably achieved its goals better than any other game. I'd say it has more robust multiplayer and singleplayer options than VF4 as well. VF4 Evo's training mode was very in-depth, but I wouldn't say I really had all that much fun going through it. Also, like with Halo, when you get 4 or more people playing and having an awesome time, it trumps a max of two.
I rather play Super Bomberman 1/2 than SSBM if I can get 4 or more ppl to play together.
Because it is a better game.
Saturn Bomberman is the correct answer.
I never got the Saturn version, unfortunately. Would love to try the 10 men bomberman with 9 other people, but that doesn't seem to be easy to do.
I find bomberman to be much more simple to learn/play (it is about as pick up and play as you can get), yet with the different maps/powerups, the game is deep. Any game where you make custom taunts is gold ("Greed Kills!").
I just don't like SSBM, I never understood why people hold it to such high esteem. It is not a particularly good fighting game and adding more people doesn't make it any better.
That's fine. This sort of subjectivity remains why these lists can't be taken seriously, and particular placement even less so. I'd still be interested in hearing why it isn't a good fighting game though.
Granted, I hold that DOA4 is a better game than many on this list, but I know I'm in the minority.
I don't know about the rest of you, but when I'm looking for a smart, unbiased perspective on the latest Nintendo games, I turn to Joust Williams.
Me too Compass, me too.
I can't believe I just read that.Quote:

Whatever, the greatest atrocity is that Street Fighter II is #24.
I don't know that Adventure would constitute and RPG. But shit, even if you're a total noob you should know Ultima.
I don't know what the true first was. Probably Dungeon, which was like 1975. But really, the thing that aggrevates me is not that he didn't know, but the fact that he felt compelled to make a historical claim like that despite being off by at least 10 years. It's just talking out of his ass.
The one about KOTOR being the first game with an alignment system is cute, too. Why do people feel like they have to do that?

TNL never had a top 100 list, but several years back I put together lists of games for each platform. Everyone listed their top 10, and I tallied up the votes to create a master list. Symphony of the Night wound up being the top overall game.
Gaze ye back through the mists of time!
The All-TNL Top 10 Playstation Games
I did lists for every major system up to that time, including the NES & Master System, but the others seem to have been lost to the fragile corners of THE DATABASE.
I thought Miracle Warriors (1987 US) was the first JRPG, before Phantasy Star and well before Dragon Warrior (1989 US)?
Wow, lots of games before Dragon Warrior:

There were western RPGs before that, as I am sure NeoZeedeater will inform us.
Well, Adventure and Ultima have already been mentioned, anyway.
A main problem I have with Top 100 lists in general is that they tend to be overpopulated with a few entries of the same series. There are already 2 Final Fantasies and 3 Zeldas here, and one more of each showing up before it's over is almost a certainty.
That makes little sense to me - considering the hundreds of thousands of games out there, I wouldn't be able to tell someone that out of the very best 100 of them, 4 or 5 are from the same series. I couldn't imagine telling someone who wants to only play the best videogames that they have to play Final Fantasy 4, 7, and 6, while ignoring a few thousand other RPGs that might be worthy of consideration. Pick the best one out of a series and include a wider variety of games, please. Addressing an entire series as a single entity is a cop-out as well, so I don't think that would be any better.
I think that if it somehow turns out that the ten best games ever made are all part of the same series, then they should all take their place in the top ten and sit there as a nice "you can't fuck with us" message to all of the developers whose games took places 11-100.
Probably one series won't ever be able to do that, but maybe Nintendo's franchises will work together to take the top 5. What's left: Super Mario Bros, Mario 64,Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and ........................Super Metroid? Wait, Super Metroid's not needed, Twilight Princess came out in 2006. Super Metroid can take 7th place after being edged out by Tetris for 6th.
They weren't very good? Also unlike a lot of other games that didn't make the cut, most people who made selections probably played those two games and made informed decisions not to include them.Quote:
How the fuck were Tomb Raider and Resident Evil not there?
Yoshi's Island
If TNL made another list right now FF 7 would still be on it.
Yeah, we haven't run all the morons out unfortunately.
Which one did you do Frog, cause those are the only ones I want to read.
That thread shows me that the original Tenchu really was considered great by a ton of people. It's a shame there hasn't been an awesome next-gen (current gen) update for that franchise. Only diehards like me and Dolemite made it past playing the third or fourth game. I guess Assassin's Creed might fill the spot.
Wrong.
You have 2 seconds after typing FF to enter in the Letter T.
I'd let XII slide too. But you better be fast on that last "I".
He voted for Clayfighters 64
Blue Swede Goo is the best fighting game character ever.
IBTN, nobody fucks with him.
We were originally asked to submit a list of our 25 favorite games (no mention of consideration for impact or any of the other qualifiers) to create a pool of games from which we'd vote the Top 100 list. There are the games I submitted.

Never owned a Sega console? ;)
That list is fucking terrible. Nintendo published the 7 best cartridge based games ever? Bull fucking shit.
It's sad when other IGN monkeys had to bail MarkRyan's ass out to keep the list fro being even worse.
That would be the first useful editing IGN ever had.
lolz
So the worst one.
Month for month, DC was the best system I ever owned.
Unless you bought the others.
The only thing DC is good for are the few shmups, VOOT (with Twin Stick) and Samba.
Those are just my favorite games and I wouldn't expect anyone but me to agree with the list. I'm not at all presenting it as the "Top 25 Games of All Time," but I make no apologies for what are my favorite games.
Meteos is pretty phenomenal in multiplayer with character depth not too different from Street Fighter. Different planets have totally different play strategies and matching them up against different planets to play the strengths and weaknesses is very, very unique to the puzzle genre.
Well, if you played fighting games at all Playstation was the ass of systems and DC was the cream. Playstation was really good for jrpg's around then, getting Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Breath of Fire 4, and Final Fantasy IX, but for variety i don't remember there being that much.
The lack of Genesis games on this list really is apalling. There's no Gunstar Heroes, Sonic is really low, and I have a sneaking suspicion we won't be seeing any Sonics higher on the list.
Indeed. These media lists seem to become more Nintendo-system biased every year. Any top 100 with Sonic below several Mario games, and no Wonder Boy, Shinobi games, or Gunstar is worthless. I think we can rule out NEC systems too as I recall MarkRyan saying he would be surprised if any IGN editors had ever owned one. My only hope there is that they have played some via Virtual Console.
I still want to know who would hire a video game journalist who never owned a wide variety of consoles. You could randomly pick members of this board, and they'd destroy IGN in knowledge, writing, and general interest.
Yeah, I think Buttcheeks and myself head up that list of serious gamers.
Sonic and Gunstar don't belong on a top 100 unless it's top 100 games that people really like but aren't really that good.
