The "I Just Watched..." Thread

Holy shit. That just sold me on the movie completely. I'll pick it up next paycheck.

I just watched the "Alien Quadrilogy" version of Aliens. Of all the great movies, I've seen (and owned*) Aliens the most, by a long shot, to an absurd degree. The commentary on this version is a dream come true --despite "quadrilogy" being the stupidest term ever.

My appreciation for the movie grows every time I see it! The level of craftsmanship on this movie is damn near unmatched, before or since.

*Original VHS, VHS box-set, Bootleg Special Edition VHS, Widescreen THX VHS, Widescreen THX Laserdisc, Special Edition Laserdisc (AMAZING), Alien Legacy DVD set, Alien Quadrilogy set. I like it a lot!

I put Aliens behind 1 and 3. I never used to think that when I saw it as a kid, but me and a friend watched it for the first times in years and were blown away by how boring and uneventful the entire movie is. We kept saying, "I thought this was an action movie" but there are like 3 scenes. The rest is just them hanging around, waiting for stuff. Its not an awful movie, its just way more boring than what I remembered.

So does my friend, and several other people I have talked to about the movie in recent weeks after seeing it again. Failing at life at life that is.

Its by far not as good as Alien.

I used to think that. It's not true, though.

Alien 3 is not nearly as cool as I remember it either. Its also very un Fincher, for being Finchers first movie. But he also hates it, and refuses any involvement in features, or restoration, etc. for it.

But honestly, Aliens is boring. 2.5 hours, with an early action scene, a middle one, and then the Alien street fight at the end. Rest of time, just hanging out.

Fuck all that, there's not enough character development in movies anymore. I dig every minute of that movie.

Alien 3 sorta works, mostly because Charles Dutton is a bad-ass. It's not as good as 2, and it's covering the same ground as 1. If there was some kind of mix between the "special edition" of Alien 3 and the theatrical, I think it would stand up a little better. I still love the hell out of it.

How do you like "Alien" if you think "Aliens" is boring?

Character development is fine, but I don't think these characters, other than Ripley are all that interesting. Also, you know all the characters are going to die from the get-go, and most of them are just military goons with not much to develop or to care about when they do die. Its hard to attach yourself to Bill "Game over man, game over!" Paxton in this. Michael Biehn is not that great of an actor, and only James Cameron had any interest in him. Until Rodriguez cast him in Planet Terror (20 years later).

The movies got awesome special effects, and set design though. But Cameron has always had good teams to do that.

Srsly, Aliens isn't as good as Alien, but it's still one of the greatest movies ever made. No action? What the fuck.

Just watched Ghosts of Mars, fantastic film. Truly his best work since escape from NY, and such wonderful effect work. With a coherent and fleshed out story. Why was there never a sequel?
