Watched the next two episodes, I'm enjoying it despite the fact that at the moment they are trying a little too hard to emulate TOS with characters that (at this point) aren't nearly as interesting. It's still enjoyable though, and it's fascinating watching these episodes that I haven't seen in over 20 years.
Soodhu Kavvum (unofficially translated to English as Deception is Addictive) - Great Tamil action/comedy about kidnapping.
The Skin I Live In - Strange, creepy, and fascinating. Definitely recommended.
The Beaver - Not a typical Mel Gibson performance. It's like they made a whole movie out of Conky from Trailer Park Boys. Worth watching.
Watched the new TMNT movie*—*I have to say it was almost exactly what I was expecting. It felt like they took the cartoon from the 90s and nailed a live action version of it. I actually really enjoyed it (there was some pretty silly logic on the part of Shredder though). After hearing all of the negative reviews I thought it would suck (the first one wasn't very good, I thought). Some genuine hilarious moments with Will Arnett's character too.
Bebop and Rocksteady were terrific. Every scene with them was the shit.
That's what I wanted out of this movie to be honest. I might take my daughter to go see it.
I read a review that complained it didn't have "archaic energy" of the original comics. I like the original comics but the cartoons were not that and not bad because they weren't. But I'm not sure a big action blockbuster is actually a concept that even works at all with that concept. The animated take on this franchise lost most if not all gravitas that the original concept had and I think that's perfect fine.
I was really just hoping for some silly evil plans from Shredder and Bebop and Rocksteady wrecking shit and that happened a lot. I also did not like the first one much, either.

I wathced Keanu, which was a lot of fun. Good to see a comedy that was actually well shot for once.
Also watched a documentary called Finders Keepers, which is about a man finding a severed human foot in a grill he bought at an auction. It starts off ridiculous and funny, but then they flesh out the people involved, and by the end its genuinely touching. Definitely recommend it.

He rehearses apology speeches, rehearses lies, and permits the cameras to film everything. How did he agree to this? How did his wife? She is seething in every single scene.
That this thing exists at all is amazing. Though the crew, director, and editors deserve praise, there was virtually no way this footage wouldn't be compelling.

The ending seems seems so sitcommy and contrived and ridiculous. Like the worst of Veep. I had to keep reminding myself that this was really happening, and even then I couldn't suppress an eyeroll. God can be a real hack.

Pretty dang good as anime goes. Other than one episode with people in their underwear and one or two filler episodes, it felt like watching an older anime with flairs of Ghibli. It follows the daily lives of 5 soldiers stationed to some nowhere town on the border. Oh and there is a spider tank. B+ or A-. Not good enough for Dif, maybe good enough for Finch, No One, etc.

I watched Blue Velvet. Its been so long since I last saw it it was like seeing it for the first time. Dennis Hopper was a fucking animal, RIP.
I really want to watch it again soon, I don't remember anything about it but that I liked it. Hopper was so quotable.
I saw it less than a year ago at Texas Theater (where Oswald was caught) with Isabella Rossellini in attendance. It was an experience. When she got a standing ovation, she broke into tears and I believe her when said she was surprised this film could effect so many people so many years latter.

I LOVE Hudson Hawk. I think blue velvet is my most watched movie besides silence of the lambs, I throw it on basically anytime it's on tv. Everyone is so insanely perfect in their respective roles.

Never heard of it before today, and the only reason I heard of it today was because I was skimming some Ministry wikis and saw that Jesus Built My Hotrod used quotes from it. Serendipitously, it's on Hulu so I just watched it. Fairly frickin' amazing. Will watch again and try to soak more of it in, lots of depth here.

Yeah, Voltron ends once it really gets going. Sins has a lot of the worst anime tropes (redundant dialog, everyone is invincible, the main character is a pervert).

I watched another Harry Potter movie. I have no idea who most of these people are, what is going on, or why. I think it was the 4th one? There were some dragons.

I reserved a small bit of faith that this wouldn't be complete garbage because the dudes behind Smallville were behind it, and I liked the first 5 or so seasons of that show. There were some anachronisms that bugged me a bit in the first few episodes, like the rusted out body of an old truck just chilling in someone's yard. This is supposed to be thousands of years in the future. There's no way that, or modern buildings, or satellite dishes would still be around. But it's a dumb show, whatevs.
WELL...In episode 7, two characters are walking along and suddenly fall through the ground. They land in a perfectly preserved school cafeteria. One character does mention it's odd that all this stuff has lasted so long. The other explains it away that these building were sealed off, like a bug in amber. Sealed off, but the weight of two 90 lb. females was enough to break into it. OK.
Series went full retard in episode 8. Character has a gun. Makes a big deal about how much he had to trade away for it. Then hands it to another character that is a crack shot even though this is the first time she ever saw/used a gun. I'd think ammunition would be even more costly than the gun itself, but guess not because he has no hesitation in handing the gun over and watching as she uses half its ammo. Then they pulled out a projector and watched some star trek. Then they played a record and started dancing like it was matrix revolutions.

I liked the Shannara novels, and I liked the hints dropped it was our world, just years in the future and after we blew ourselves up. But the hints were subtle and strewn across several books (before Brooks made it plain as day in the Word and Void series).
For whatever reason, the people behind this show feel it necessary to shotgun current references into a fucking lord of the rings rip off and it's really stupid. There's two and a half episodes left in the season, but I can't bring myself to finish it.

I watched this movie called Finest Hours. It's basically about kyosalad and her future husband, but it's back in the 50's.

Birdman. Uh... a decent movie... not sure about Best Picture, though. Keaton, Norton, and Stone were fantastic but... I dunno. It's one of those films that other people like more than I did, I guess.
I watched the second Ninja Turtles movie.
I didn't watch the first one, and I've missed most of Michael Bay's other stuff.
It was a lot more fun than I had expected it to be. It was a formulaic movie geared to kids that played like a cartoon most of the time, but it was fun. I liked the Turtles' character designs (glowing BEATS headphones aside). They all had distinct personalities and were very expressive. Shredder and his girlfriend were forgettable, but I liked Baxter a lot. I've never watched a Tyler Perry film, but I was still not expecting anything from him. Krang was fun, too. Bebop and Rocksteady were a lot of fun, I liked when they pecker-checked each other after mutating. Casey Jones literally straps wheels to his shoes so he can skate away from danger. It was so over the top I can't find faults with it.
Mike and Dave need Movie Dates.

I binged through the three short seasons of Friday Night Dinner. It's hilarious and even the repeat jokes are amusing.
I dunno, I thought Birdman was kind of great. Brilliantly written, shot, and acted, but the story is definitely for people interested in showbusiness or has been a part of that culture

Oh, so I finally watched all the Hobbit movies. They have their moments, but Legolas sure is looking old for an elf that's 60 years younger than the last time we saw him. Shit happens. Took me two movies to realize that red haired lady-elf was actually from Lost, and not a strangely aged Aerosmith lady from the other movies. She showed up with Old Legolas, so I couldn't be certain.
Shockingly enough, if this was edited down to one 2.5 hour movie it'd probably be killer. Though I *really* did enjoy seeing Saruman's wizard ninjutsu. Lady What's Her Name straight up disintegrating some dude was also pretty sweet. Where was she during some of the key battles later on if she's Superman-tier? Why do the dwarves with the most lines look like white dudes in puffy clothes.
I was suffering from Gandalf withdrawal, so I watched Apt Pupil right after. It's another case where I wouldn't give a shit if it wasn't Sir Ian, but I enjoyed it tremendously.

And I agree that the different location/feel is a nice departure from the first when most sequels try and mimic the original as closely as possible. Plus, there's tons of action and violence, and who doesn't love that?
Predator 2 is the Lethal Weapon 3 we deserved.

Watched the Castle in the Sky blu Ray with the new English dub and old soundtrack. I had seen it before on VHS as a kid but I think it lost me. God damn, is this movie fantastic. The opening sequence has to be some of the best minutes of animation ever created. It gets a little preachy at the end but the whole thing is incredible. It's like another Indiana Jones movie almost.
Watched what I think is both seasons of Rick and Morty.

My wife and I got that Miyazaki box set recently. We started with Kiki's Delivery Service because she had never seen it. I loved this in 7th grade when it was one of about four anime tapes at the rental place near my dad's house. Now... not so much. Kiki is overbearingly earnest and the whole movie overflows with saccharine good intentions unchecked by the darkness or loneliness of most Ghibli movies. It took me until Kiki becomes a shoe-gazing mope to become invested (and this was almost certainly the reason I loved it when I did), but what little emotional complexity it has comes late in the film and is resolved neatly and immediately.Quote:

Kiki and Howl are pretty closely tied as Miyazaki's worst film honestly.
While that's true those movies aren't even bad.
I like Kiki's a lot. It's kind of like Ponyo in a way that there isn't much conflict, but it depicts a strong female character making it on their own, which I like a lot.

Star Trek Beyond. It was alright. Had a few feels moments and was more fun than the last one. Overall it just another ok movie in the Summer of Meh.

I like when movies insist I think about them for a long time. There's nothing complicated about Kiki. All the Ghiblis are movies for kids, but Kiki is the only one that feels like a kids' movie.
Cow brought up Ponyo as a movie that resembles Kiki, and it is in a lot of ways, but Ponyo is loaded with conflict. It has all kinds of complicated relationships going on: Ponyo versus her dad, Ponyo versus her identity, man versus environment, environment versus man. There's much more in Ponyo to chew on emotionally and politically as much as the dub undermines the latter.
And Kiki plays it just as safe visually as it does emotionally. Try to think of as many shots from Ponyo or Totoro as you can. I can think of a lot. Now recall the Kiki shots that left an impression on you. Nothing from the time she gets a job through the end of the movie stuck with me.
Not a horrible movie. I just wouldn't recommend it before I would any other Ghibli.
