All movies are a business model—it just so happens Marvel actually has a remarkably good batting average. For every bland Age of Ultron and Ironman 3 they make they give us pretty neat stuff like Ironman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-man. I mean, we have DC trying. They're trying to do the same thing and failing. Fox too. They call it "universe building". But they can't pull it together because their movies are unwatchable.
Pilfering on one genre has been a thing forever—after Saving Private Ryan, 300, etc all spawned small booms for different types of films. Just so happens all the rewards are going to a company who put 70 years in to cultivating a fan base and building out stories.
I like the Marvel movies. I also don't, and didn't read comics.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a good movie. No "for a comic book movie" qualifier necessary.
Dr. Strange is not very good, but it is visually imaginative and feels like a movie instead of a junk drawer of dead batteries, ketchup packets, and trailers for other movies.
They're not all aesthetic and emotional black holes, but Civil War is both.

I think the criticisms are valid though. I enjoyed it and the Bucky story. I never felt like anyone was in danger or the stakes mattered except when Ironman lost it at the end. Ant-man was good too - I highly recommend that one
Strange had a defined story scope, a clever ending, great actors and great triply visuals. The bad guy was weak. Funny how both Strange and Rogue One wasted Mads Mickelson. The hand choreography to convey different spells was neat. I think for me that's my biggest compliment of Marvel – they seem to go to great detail to convey the nuance of each character. They execute so well.

I saw it for the first time a year or so ago. I figured since it was so old and I had no nostalgia it wouldn't be that good. I was wrong, it's amazing. Easily the most tense movie I've ever seen.
It's one of the best movies ever.

I watched the first few episodes of From Dusk till Dawn the series. It's good if you like the movie. There's plenty of bad dialogue but few moments of good ones -- what a whore eats for breakfast.

I watched Kung Fu Panda 3. It's alright for a kids movie. It's just heavy handed and predictable, even for a kids movie. And Holy Shit is Kung Fu Panda annoying! If my kids watched that and starting acting like Kung Fu Panda, I'd send them to live with Calliander for a month.

Speaking of Aliens, I saw Arrival.
It was ok? The death of the kid within the first 5 minutes felt cheap, and even after you figure out what's going on it still didn't hit me.
I want to read the short story it's based on because I really feel like the aliens could have been ANYTHING else in order to get where the movie ended.
I liked the language aspect of it. That was it.

Bailed out on Ep 3 of that, sounds like it was the right move.
I only stuck it out for my wife, she liked it. It started off so strong, but damn, the rest was SO BAD.
I watched about 20 seconds of episode one and heard the rest from the other room. That 20 seconds told me all I needed.
I haven't seen Suspiria in many years, but yeah. That sounds about right. Lighting, sets, color, music: it's a brilliant atmosphere. I remember it fondly (especially seeing it as a teenager while exploring the horror genre more deeply for the first time), but definitely not for its story or characterization. I wouldn't mind seeing it again but I do know where my expectations lie with that one.
I've heard his other movies are much stronger in other ways. I THINK I've seen Opera... once... drunk... as a teenager. :D
oh shit, yeah, I actually came in here to say I'm watching The OA. I can't tell if it's utterly shite or kind of brilliant. There are definitely some things I really like about it, but WOW the dialog is BAD at times. They could totally just... cut... a lot of it and let the visuals speak for themselves.
I'm 5 episodes in.
It's holding my attention, which is more than I can say for most series I've started in the last good while.
Actually, the "shittiness" of it kind of reminds me of the first time I saw Mulholland Drive, before I knew who Lynch was, and how I thought the acting was real weird and stilted.
Not that this is anywhere close to Lynch level, but ... clearly the creators are Lynch fans. And there is some genuinely unique and disturbing stuff in here too. The body movements thing isn't bothering me a bit. Haven't you guys ever tried yoga? :D
P.S. I only heard about it because Sharon van Etten is in it, and I must say I really enjoy her character.

Home on Netflix. Not a fan of Dreamworks output and the theatrical version wasn't particularly great but yeah this is probably my favorite cartoon since Adventure Time and Steven Universe. Animation is better than the CG from the film and they genuinely fleshed out the little universe. Tip from the show is portrayed as a hyperactive, wreckless know it all (I'm Tip Tucci, tough as $2 STEAK), very endearing somehow. They went a interesting direction with Tips shallow noodle head Mom though. No Steve Martin is (of course) a bummer, on the brightside no Rhianna too!
I couldn't get into The OA but A Series of Unfortunate Events is really good (I have not read the books).

Finished The OA last night. I dug the last few episodes. I guess a lot of people hated the ending but I kinda liked it. I actually thought the stuff with the sheriff's wife was a super interesting moral dilemma for many of the characters and had a nice payoff. I'm sure people were disappointed we don't get to see what happens to the rest of the captives, but I'm okay with that ambiguity. Although more Sharon van Etten in my life wouldn't be a bad thing.
The entire series definitely oscillates between really excellent and tonally-inconsistent cheese, but I think they did a pretty great job with the characters, which made me invested in the story. I thought they did a particularly good job with Hap, by far one of the most compelling 'mad scientist's I can think of. Jason Isaacs owned that role.
Seriously though why was the Riz Ahmed's FBI character also in the house? It seems like such a hilariously deep plothole that the filmmakers just went with it.
FBI dude was in the house, because he was planting the books under her bed. He suggests that they get out of the house for some family time, and then is conveniently there. The box of books was from Amazon, and they were all brand new, looked like they'd never even been touched.

The Young Pope is the greatest thing to grace TV since "Show Me a Hero." It's really worth watching.
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. The part where Dead Ted possesses his dad and his air guitar plays a jazz lick had me dying. The whole movie is pretty good.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter: Was A Series of Vaguely Connected Events
It's been a very unproductive couple of days off.
1) Come Together. This John Lennon tribute concert was originally intended for something else, but took on new meaning in the aftermath of 911. While there were some performances I liked more than others, I dont think there was a dud in the bunch. I'd never heard of the woman that sang first, and I've since forgotten her name, but holy crap could she sing.
2) It's a mad mad mad mad mad world. I love this movie. I first saw it probably 30 years ago. It's weird seeing people I'm used to seeing from when they were much younger (Buster Keaton, 3 Stooges) or much older (Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Sid Caeser, Jonathan Winters). About the only actor that seemed "period" appropriate for me was Jerry Lewis. Still a fantastic time that in no way feels as long as it is.
3) The good, the bad, and the ugly. I love this movie. I first saw it probably 30 years ago. Unlike the above though, it didnt click with me until later in life. Westerns were boring things my dad watched. Still, It's a fantastic time that in no way feels as long as it is.
4) First four episodes of Taboo. I want to like it and mostly do. But something about it keeps me from loving it. Tom Hardy is Tom Hardy though and that's enough to keep my interest.
I feel the same way about Taboo.
My wife is watching all of Grey's Anatomy. Kate Capshaw's daughter plays a lesbian doctor on it. Weird.

Black Sunday: Robert Shaw movies are always great. This and The Taking of Pellham 1-2-3 pretty much form the template for the entire 'thriller' genre that followed.
Stranger Than Paradise: Pretty much Eastern European Clerks, maybe a bit better.
Five Easy Pieces: Looking at Jack Nicholson's modern output, it's difficult to know what the big deal with him is, why he's so beloved. This is why.
Oh yeah, no way you can look at Nicholson's modern output and get a gauge about how amazing he was. I think he probably has just done movies for a paycheck for the past 30 years, his real good stuff was back in the day.
