All movies are a business model—it just so happens Marvel actually has a remarkably good batting average. For every bland Age of Ultron and Ironman 3 they make they give us pretty neat stuff like Ironman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-man. I mean, we have DC trying. They're trying to do the same thing and failing. Fox too. They call it "universe building". But they can't pull it together because their movies are unwatchable.
Pilfering on one genre has been a thing forever—after Saving Private Ryan, 300, etc all spawned small booms for different types of films. Just so happens all the rewards are going to a company who put 70 years in to cultivating a fan base and building out stories.
