It's not about the bunny.
The Leftovers finale was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Apparently there are two camps Nora is lying to Kevin or she isn't but I don't think she was.
Samurai Cop. Possibly the most ineptly made movie I've ever seen, and consistently hilarious from start to finish. An absolute gem, and I'm seriously upset with myself that I took so long to finally see it.
I found out that they actually made a sequel a year or two ago. However, I'm never going to watch it because unlike the original, it's campy on purpose. No thanks, bad movies aren't the same if they're winking at the camera.
Finally getting through iron fist. its getting better. but this is easily, the most boring drunken boxing fight ive ever seen in anything.
It's horrible, don't finish it.
man it is dry as shit. i find my self Fast forwarding through a lot of it. its just bleh. its better than the first few eps. but still. i think im gonna catch up on flash and finish DD s2 instead. and go through Old Hunters. got my pizza cutter to +10. thats a better use of my time than finishing IF.
Samurai Cop 2. Dogshit, I couldn't even finish it. When a bad movie is made bad on purpose it's just not the same.
It was free on Amazon. No harm done.
Yeah, I'm severely late to the party on Samurai Cop. Do those other two movies measure up?
hollywood cop is up there, and I can't speak to the other one cause I haven't seen it myself but it has z'dar too
Watched 2 episodes of GLOW nursing a hangover this morning. Not bad—will watch more. But one thing: In what universe is Alison Brie considered unattractive? It's almost comical in how much effort they've gone to to make her look sickly. IMO they should have cast someone else or written another reason for her to be disliked by the director.
I know I'm a little late, but I just watched both John Wick movies. I haven't seen an action movies I'd liked for a while. The action scenes are really good an Keanu does a stellar job with his acting throughout both movies.
Stop with the pink.
Pink's the manliest color in this site's palette.
That's why bbobb is so opposed to it.
Exactly.
I'm loving GLOW. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it's funny, it's cute, and the clothing is almost all correct for the period so I'm satisfied.
Oh also, Drew - I know an actress who reminds me SO much of Alison Brie in this show, it's almost weird. And she definitely has that attractive in some lights but not others thing. It's weird.
Yeah. I binged watched this entire thing. Actually when they started planning the show and bits it got fun. The KKK angle and lengths the leads went to felt earned.
I feel like they did a good enough job and Alison Brie is a fantastic actor. Brie does have kind of an odd duck look sometimes especially with the frumpy 90s costumes going on here.
I also felt they were really unusually respectful of the culture around wrestling. Usually directors willingly keep themselves at arms length with it (even The Wrestler did this) as a wink to those in the audience. "We know we think this is stupid too!" Here they hung a lantern on that and got to the heart of why people do this and watch it – they enabled themselves to have fun. It really is a strange and interesting sort behind the curtain.
The filter they went with makes it look like it was filmed in the 80's. I'm only on episode 2 but I like it so far. Also, Alison Brie naked.
tears for fears pizza boy slow mo had me cracking up.
(this post brought to you by pringles and maron' curly mustache)
Great show. The original Glow pilot is on YouTube, it's something.
YouTube!
They're pretty bad.
It's kind of the television equivalent of a strip mall with smelly carpet.
Speaking of, there are a hilarious amount of full on accidental vag shots in the pilot.
I am not a fan of Edgar Wright. The World's End was probably one of my most disliked movies in recent years. That said, Baby Driver was excellent. It was really well done. Excellent action sequences, performances, style, etc. Really enjoyed it.
Edgar Wright is a brilliant director.
Yes. Yes he is.
I think he is talented and has a unique voice, it's just one that has not really clicked with me... until now.
Hairspray is WAY better than I remember it being. Most of John Waters stuff is trash with a couple good moments thrown in, but this is almost an actual movie. The soundtrack absolutely kills. I got all tender inside when I recognized some of the intersections they were filming at, or when Divine said someone was "Up Conklin" or whatever the street was. I miss Baltimore.
Next up is Cry-Baby, and eventually SERIAL MOM which is the fucking best, then his two most recent movies which I've never seen, and by all accounts are garbage.
Dirty Shame is useless.
Wait, no love for Pecker? That one is great. Cecil B. Demented is definitely shit though.
I watched Okja last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think director dude just wanted to make a live action anime.
I met George Clooney and John Travolta on the set of Hairspray in Toronto. I politely asked them to move so I could hang some poster banners on the walls and they seemed shocked and amused I didn't care much about them.
And that dude at NY chicken wants to know when he's getting his $500.
And Polyester is Water's best movie. Suck it.
I'm shocked when anyone that didn't grow up in/around Baltimore likes this dude's movies. The city is as much of a character as anyone else on screen.
And I thought Pecker was pretty good, though I'll watch most anything that makes fun of art.
Never.
(Completely unrelated to Waters, sorry to derail post)
That documentary about Hulk Hogan and Gawker on Netflix rn is absolutely awful and precisely the reason why the media is a garbage shithole that needs to be ignored.
Aww man, I would have watched that. That story is fascinating.
You should watch the 12 o' Clock Boys instead.
I could watch Starship Troopers instead.
Your loss. It's really good.
To Gohan's credit so is Starship Troopers.
Yeah, but he's already seen it at least 10 times.
That shitty movie you guys like.
I thought it was alright enough. I had fun pranking a friend with it. We were watching it, and I could tell he thought I had brought some kind of mid life crisis indie film into his life then suddenly Fucking aliens fighting in the bathroom like puddies from power rangers He was good with it after that.
yup. it was so ridiculously biased that you couldn't help root FOR Hogan, because the Gawker guys were such entitled bullshit assholes that they deserved to go bankrupt. They essentially were comparing their journalism to the virtues of the National Inquirer. Then the second half of the documentary was an anti-Trump libtard love-in. I swear to god, you couldn't imagine something this awful.
Fuck'm. People need to think twice before they whore out someone's life for money. I didn't need to see his sex tape. That isn't news.
Thing is, my opinion probably leans more towards Gawker than most. I am fine with them releasing that tape. The real stupidity was not taking it down when the judge ordered them to, but AJ Daulerio was always a little shit.
I also don't like rich guys fighting proxy wars against media coverage they don't like - and I think the thing Thiel was getting revenge upon was not being outed but Valleywag.
That said the idea that Gawker, fucking GAWKER, was some bastion of truth and gumshoe reporting that got crushed under by the ruthless corrupt system is hilarious.
No, I'm similar - I think releasing the tape was fine, but when they were told to take it down and didn't, you know they were gonna get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the jam.
However, similar to these websites dealing in revenge porn, etc., they know they are dealing in a shitty grey area. I think they messed with the bull and got the horns, and were totally unprepared to actually deal with that fact. It seemed that it was a random bunch of has-been writers and critics who sort of thought they were being first amendment champions, but didn't understand basic legality to protect themselves. Bad (or sick) guy. Sad!
Baby Driver is solid.
Baby Driver cost $34 million! That's wild for a 2017 action movie center around car chases.
A Dirty Shame wasn't the shitshow I expected! I'm glad I watched it. It's Happiness of the Katakuris level weird, but in a different direction.
I'm watching Salvation. This show is decidedly not good, and little more than a gigantic collection of tropes. I enjoyed the first ep far more than I should have.
Also I'm Dying Up Here based on the Comedy Store in the 70s. This is a fun show, kinda surprised more people aren't watching it.
If this was the "I almost just watched thread" I'd say The Lure. I've been looking forward to seeing this for quite a while without stumbling on the fact that it is a musical. That'll probably add another few months to my wait.
I'm Dying Up Here is GREAT. one of the best shows this season. Its got atrocious reviews and people seem to not know about it. sad!
I'm trying to catch up on Game of Thrones so I can watch the final season with friends.
This... is not good. Each episode is a string of 7 minute vignettes of disjointed groups of characters trying to be more serious and upset than the last. It then attempts to bring drama by suddenly killing one of the 50 cast members like we've spent enough time with any of them to care. I'm happy to see them die because I've hated seeing them on camera. At best this is late night pay cable and an excuse to swear, show gore, and linger on nude female anatomy but make sure the camera is cropped right above the too-naughty bits or there's an obstacle in the foreground. They are some grade A boobs, but that can only help it so much. I'd like to at least say there are some nice vistas, but even those are often times digitally enhanced by kids who don't know what reality looks like or ruined by glaring greenscreening.
Tyrion is the best character because he doesn't have time for the other characters' shit and he has the hottest waifu.
Also, HBO Now's website is unusable. I'm watching on a tablet now because the mobile app is so much better.
I don't like game of thrones either.
There is a recap episode called "the story so far" out on the torrent sites that may prove easier to watch.
Thanks, I read a bunch of wikipedia episode summaries trying to remember where I last gave up on the show. I'm going to see how far I can make it playing in the background, and will probably have to reference the "story so far" even if I make it all the way.
Did you read the books?
While I can understand how you feel the way the way you do, as I've felt it with other shows and it annoys the crap out of me- I wonder if my having a deeper connection to the characters because of the books has made a difference for me.
No, I've only watched the show.
I started watching Sense8 and it's pretty terrible.
It goes nowhere! And when it does, you won't care.
Just caught Baby Driver with my brother last night. Holy smokes, that movie is a fucking well oiled machine.
Sense8 was v.boring. If you find the identity politics stuff compelling that might have more of a hook.
Baby Driver was perfect. Our theater was slightly out of focus so some of the 'song lyrics as graffiti' stuff didn't read as well as I'd have liked, but good excuse to see it again soon. Normally something I'd raise hell about, but no one I was seeing the movie with seemed to care so w/e.
If it's too soft pretend it's a Laserdisc on an old projector.
Hey I was just trying to watch the movie, I wasn't trying to accomplish climax.
We all have movies we inexplicably have never seen right? One of mine was The Shining. Even though I bought a Kubrick BR collection years ago. I saw it today for the first time and yea I can see why a lot of people think it's one of the best movies. I don't think one frame was out of place. I need to see it again. It was also great to see Jack being Jack before he turned into a kind of parody of himself.
It really is a fantastic movie, though I'd still probably put Dr. Strangelove over it.
I am a Kubrick hipster and I think Full Metal Jacket is the best of his. I really love that movie. That said... they're all works of staggering genius.
There are two versions of the Shining. Which one did you see? The Directors Cut is actually shorter than the theatrical btw.
FMJ has an amazing first half followed by a boring as fuck second half, at least that's my memory though I will note I haven't seen it in a while.
The second half is great, it just has to follow that first half, which is straight up amazing.
I wish that movie didn't show Douglas with a gun looking hard. The action scenes are self-defeating. They're what keep Paths of Glory from perfection.
It's still my favorite war movie.
About the only thing Destin/Anthony ever did around here that made an impact on me was recommending Pathways for the movie club.
(and get me into Bowie. Ok the only two things Destin/Anthony ever did around here was...)
Come to think of it, there's a bunch of Kubrick stuff I haven't seen. I might watch something of his later today.
I just saw The Shining for the first time 2 years ago! It's spectacular. I'm glad I saw it as an adult though, I appreciated it wayyyyy more.
Still haven't seen Barry Lyndon.
I'm going to resist the urge to shame you. Barry Lyndon might be the most technically perfect film ever made.
Just caught Dunkirk.
Bring earplugs.
I found out today that it's possible to be both underwhelmed AND overwhelmed by a movie at the same time.
I haven't seen any Kubrick movies other than FMJ, which is a masterpiece. I need to fix this.
I'm pretty skeptical of the dude. I don't think he's had a third act I've liked yet.
Memento was great top to bottom, but I haven't liked anything he's done since he hit the big time.
