No one said it was super smart. But there are certain things that stupid people complain about.
Don't Look in the Basement - Possibly one of the greatest things committed to film. My favorite part was all the scenes of the black character (Sam) eating grape popsicles. There's also crazy-ass Richard Simmons loon who's always laughing and calling others crazy, it's pretty epic overall.
I agree, however it was marketed as a violent action film, so its only natural that some of its viewers would resent the slow burn of the film.
A Perfect Getaway - Pretty decent thriller. Nice twist at the end, that goes against the cast playing the roles they usually don't.
Na Igre part 1(In the Game) - Pretty cool Russian scifi/action flick, about group of CounterStrike/Racers/Fighters gamers, who get in-real life gaming abilities, due to evil corp mind enhancement experiment. Now in real life they can do all the wild shit, from the games, but it comes with the real life consequences. There are no continues or saves, and blood is real. Pretty cool action sequences, staged and choreographed on the Hollywood level, and fun to watch. Only thing that sucks is that stupid idea of splitting films in 2 parts, in hopes to make bigger profits. Now will have to wait till like March for the conclusion.
Oh, forgot to list Jenifers Body which was rather MEH. There were few funny and topic bits (like the Satanist Emo Band dialogs), and it was nice to see Lance Henriksen in the small cameo, but the rest was crap. I mean they didn't really shown any gore, and there is zilch of nudity in it, kinda going against the whole reason for the damn flick.
My dad got a bluray player and TF 2. Man, that movie still has problems. I mostly ignored all the stuff I noticed wrong the first time. I didn't even really listen to the dialog. But man, even then I noticed new things wrong with it. My mother who never really watched transformers with me as a kid, and knows nothing about them, asked me if this was made during the film makers strike, because it seemed disjointed and badly cut.
then I watched the prophecy. That is a pretty rad movie. It has some cool deaths in it and Christopher walken in it. He is pretty skinny in this movie and has almost a David bowie vibe because of it. I wonder if this was on purpose because angles are suppose to be both genders.
I'd argue angles are genderless, not hermaphroditic; but it all depends on the degree of your semantics.
The Great Dictator, I really enjoyed it.
watched the critic today. Man, I miss this show.
It stinks!
i bet Jay Sherman would have HATED avatar.
And we'd all enjoy watchig him hate it
Gigantic - Indie film that I liked a bit. It was quirky and a bit disjointed, but after getting through the first half of the film. And since I already invested time, I wadded through the story and in the end it was rather enjoyable. Paul Dano was great, as a Mattress salesman and someone thrown into a new situation. Zooey Deschanel was great. Plain and simple. John Goodman was great actually, but then again he's really just a good actor. Edward Asner was great too.
2 out of 5. The story was disjointed and hard to see where it was going. In the end it was more drama than comedy. Unless they were aiming for DARK Comedy, then I would give it 3.5 out of 5.
I think it was supposed to be dark awkward bizarre comedy. You should watch Wristcutters: A Love Story, Flakes, and Winter Passing if you liked Gigantic. They all have the same amateurish but well-loved feeling as well as a really strange sense of humor.
Law Abiding Citizen: Had some pretty cool moments and death sequences, but as always with these types of movies; kinda falls apart at the end. I hate how they go through all this hoopla of building up the protaganist like he's so god damn smart and always four steps ahead of everyone else, only to have them get caught in the end over something stupid.
If Leonidas was as smart and calculating as the movie built him up to be, he would have noticed a thousand things during the endgame. But no, writers write themselves into a corner and since they aren't nearly as smart as their character is supposed to be, suddenly the character makes a lot of dumb out of character mistakes and overlook shit that he never in a million years would have overlooked.
I didn't hate the movie, but I do hate that shit.
Recently I went through some stuff in my Instant list that's been sitting there for ages.
Two MST3k episodes, "werewolf" and the other one was about aliens. It's MST3K so they're both good times (from the 1999 season).
School of Surf- docu on a High School surfing competition from 2008. Some NJ teams are in it and they head to CA for the finals. The creator of the contest made it so that it's a real team competition (5 vs 5) with 3 scored heats that's designed to keep things interesting and fair. 75 minutes or so, it was a fun watch. The finals were pretty bad ass.
Donkey Punch- a small budget horror/suspense movie. Three girls are on vacation when they meet a group of boys and end up taking a big yacht out for some partying. Some bad things happen (see title) and it turns into a "what would you do?" scenario. I had no expectations going in and liked what I saw. Competent acting and a neat idea for a movie that only showed it's meager budget here and there. I was pretty impressed. Paced well with a good runtime so it didn't overstay its welcome.
The International- I like clive owen and naomi watts is really freaking cute. The movie is about an Interpol agent (clive owen) trying to expose a multinational bank's involvement in dealing arms to warlords all over the place. More complicated and confusing than it needed to be it really isn't worth watching. There's one cool action scene in a museum, but that's the only highlight for me.
Public Enemies- Slow to get going but I liked it. John Dillanger is a bad ass bank robber and I love shit like this. Cool dudes, hot dames, tommy guns, bank heists, car chases, prison breaks and some eye rolling film noir style lines from Johnny Depp are all present. There's something off about the movie that keeps it from being really good, but I couldn't put my finger on it. It seems to struggle to really engage you early on, but like I said it won me over. Can't say I really recommend it though.
District 9 - Finally saw it on DVD. Question ... Why did they think he couldn't direct Halo again?
Suits just don't know shit. Can't say I really blame them, the budget was over 200 million and that's a big gamble no matter who is behind the camera. Pretty clear they can make it for less than that though.
That movie was awesome.
wow.
American Psycho since it made a few TNL Top Films of the Decade lists and I hadn't watched the Blu Ray yet. Bale's Patrick Bateman is even more Tom Cruise-like than I remembered. So good.
I don't usually complain or even notice things like this, but the Blu Ray transfer is kind of shitty. This is probably part of the reason I was able to buy it for $9.99.
Be Kind Rewind. I saw it in theaters, but I just Netflixed it so the girlfriend could see it. It's definitely Gondry's weakest so far. Feels like a lot of corporate influence all around. I'm hoping his next one has a bit more "Eternal Sunshine" flair to it.
watched "the tournament", with Vinhg Rhames, Kelly Hu and Robert Carlyle. Basically, if you ever played "The Club", with a little more plot. Actually a pretty solid flick.
I just watched Star Trek. Holy crap was it good. Makes me want to go back and watch the original show and movies.
For the story and characters. Just saying it got me interested is all.
I just went through seasons 4-7 of TNG for the first time in years. Great show.
Watched the hangover tonight, and then tuned in spike which was running Street Fighter. Street Fighter was funnier.
The Next Generation
....what's that?
Ooooo ok, that Star Trek show
Dr whatshisfaces Imaginarium: Despite the fact that I can't remember the name of the movie I was pretty impressed. Not knowing anything about it my girlfriend and I saw ads in the paper and dexided to check it out because of Terry Gilliam. I have fond memories of Baron Munchausen (sp?) and the movie carried the same farytale type energy I remember from all those movies as a kid while adding just enough darkness and abstraction to keep it interesting and create that Gilliam twist. Tom Waits is fun and the roving cast of pretty boy mega stars actually do pretty well.
also: Lily Cole
all the queen's men
I don't really know what to say. Horrible movie with great sets and vehicles. Even has a tank chase.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_Queen%27s_Men
Caught Blade Trinity last night. What a sad ending....to the series, not the movie.
The Hangover - DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE. It's ok for a comedy to re-hash jokes from older comedies, but for god's sake do it better. Galifianakis' character should have been played by Jack Black.
oh what the fuck ever! i hate the fucking people that feel the need to hate on such and excellent movie, also Zach's character was amazing and only he could do it true justice
I am in between Hubb and Dump. I thought it was a great movie, and Zach did an amazing job, but I do feel the hype was a bit too much. There plenty of other movies out there that are as funny or even funnier. At least I think so.
you sure you wanna be in between us? :p
I'm not saying it's the greatest movie of all time, but it certainly is one of the funniest movies I've watched and Zach completely carried that movie, I don't think it would've worked as well without him
Zach was the only funny thing in that movie. Jack Black's over acting would make it unwatchable.
FUCK!
Any scene with the baby and zach was hilarious.
my favorite part of the flick
Sex Drive: I know it's been mentioned before, but I recommend Sex Drive. I've shown the DVD to the wife, my bro and other family over the last few weeks. There's a love story for the girls, and net is that everybody likes it. If you like late night teen comedies OR romantic comedies, you should like it. Not many movies appeal to both groups. I also enjoyed the how-to-get-chicks angle, ala Swingers. Ian's older brother Rex is awesome. (We all knew somebody like Rex, right?)
The Proposal: It's better than I expected. Wife loved it, I liked it. Rather by the book rom com, but Bullock and Reynolds save it.
The Hangover: I preferred Sex Drive to this movie. Everybody else seems to prefer The Hangover. Can't go wrong either way, IMO. I saw it in the theater and bought it on Blu Ray. But it didn't thrill me the way many others in the genre did. I can't explain why, it just didn't. But still very entertaining.
State of Play: Excellent.
Friday the 13th Remake: Screw the haters, I loved it. Never saw the originals (and thought I was buying the original), but very pleasantly surprised. A nice reboot for the series.
Dean was too busy killing those miners ;)
Saw 2 interesting movie on cable this weekend.
King of California and He was a quiet man. HWAQM made Christian Slater look like the stapler guy from Office Space.
But don't be surprised if you don't think it's very good. It isn't.
'salright. About as good as Fight Club. Really don't wanna watch either of 'em again, though.
Watched "Cool Hand Luke" tonight, which kicks the shit out of both those movies.
American Psycho I think has some really great elements, but has some major structural weaknesses. The ending is sloppy, and I can't make up my mind if I like how cartoony it becomes. Bateman's face after he blows up that car with a handgun is pretty priceless though.
I was struck by an odd urge to watch it earlier today, actually.
I've got Glengary Glenn Ross and The Killing at home. Might try to watch one of those tonight.
Do you have to return some video tapes?
Assholes who don't like American Psycho are probably the same assholes who don't like I <3 Huckabees who are the same assholes who think Rainman was Dustin Hoffman's best movie.
Never saw it. Like most people.
I <3 I <3 Huckabees and also think it is Dustin Hoffman's best movie. Also Mark Wahlberg, whom i normally don't like at all.
American Psycho is pretty entertaining at first, but about halfway through it gets really old.
Your mom is really old.
I have a business card. The font type is Cillian Rail.
why in the fuck do you have a business card??
You can't be that stupid.
The color I'm told is ... Bone.
your face is stupid
Daybreakers - Good stuff - See official thread.
9- I really liked it. Cool story and it looked really, really good. Stands out from every CG movie out there. Plus, Crispin Glover is in it!
The original short is on the DVD and that's pretty amazing too.
There's a ton of Criterion Collection stuff on Netflix Instant Watch right now.
Elevator to the Gallows
But not all of it is good! I realize this was a Bold New Thing back in 1950, but even in that context it's kind of dumb. Veronique is inconsistently written, flip-flopping between tremblingly reserved and nervous when Louis steals a car to recklessly encouraging him to race said stolen car at 100mph to the most unbelievably cavalier suicide attempt ever.
Tevernier is not believable. The kind of man who owns and has command of a grappling hook is not the kind of man who forgets to remove a grappling hook after murdering someone, nor the kind of man who leaves his engine running when he returns for a grappling hook.
That Tevernier's rock-solid alibi for the crime he is wrongly accused of implicates him in the crime he should've gotten away with is neat. Other than that and it's admittedly awesome ending in the darkroom, this movie doesn't offer much in 2010.
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus- Really good! It's Terry Gilliam getting back to form and proving that he can make a movie that isn't boring. Terry Gilliam, you could do it all along!
It's 80's Terry Gilliam as seen in the year 2009-2010. Great, wonderful, could use less cg and more hand-craftiness like the 80's films, but otherwise super neat!
Here's hoping The Man Who Killed Don Quixote happens and that it's as good as it deserves to be.
So I took a bus ride from DC to NY the other day and watched 2012, because. I mean, I was on a bus. I like the ending because (2012 spoilers if you care)
Okay, so they make a big stink about only rich assholes being let on, but then it ends with a bunch of rich assholes and some chinese day-laborers being all that survives as if that makes it okay. Then they continue to Africa where they will re-establish the human race... you know, barring all of the surviving warlords carving a lawless landscape with their mountains of AK-47s.
2012 2 would look like the Killing Fields.
Watched 48 Hrs. , which was a well made buddy cop movie with likable characters and a plot that didn't matter!
Sparked a discussion on MacGuffins!
I don't know what that movie is but I would bet 10 dollars Eddie Murphy is in it if it's from the 80's.
It is full of shocking 1980s racism!
And yes, Eddie Murphy. His character spends the ENTIRE MOVIE trying to get laid! Constant laments!
Yellerdog, always with the shouting. In your own edit notes, for god's sake.
I watched all the Human Giant episodes. There's a few brief moments of genius, but it generally never rises above juvenile, first-stab sorta humor. Plenty of great cameos though, and Aziz Ansari is pretty good. I'd say it's at its best when the guys are just reacting to each other naturally, and less the material they come up with.
Also, I Heart Huckabees is such vapid trash. I was suckered in under the pretense that it was about existentialism, when really, it's just a barfmongering crapfest.
You should watch the movie. That phrase is shouted, exclusively.
Had you never heard of 48 Hours before?
There's a fine clip of Eddie Murphy in a cowboy bar kicking ass, but it is NSFW because of bewbies.
Lions for Lambs - I love political intrigue movies. I also love Wall Street. So, movies that make me think I enjoy tremendously. Then again I also like dumb movies like Avatar or Transformers. This was not one of them.
Three plots move concurrently. So, you have to see the parallels. First plot involves a platoon of Army soldiers being deployed to a region of Afghanistan. Its a new offensive idea and to some of the soldiers it seems to be haphazardly set up. Think Black Hawk Down, but this time with soldiers who question the General. The next plot is A Republican Senator played by Tom Cruise and a reporter played by Merryl Streep. Basically, the Senator is explaining to her the new strategy, which is in line with the first plot. He says that the way for us to win the War on Terror we have to change our philosophy. He explains that we have to go on the offensive and attack, instead of diplomacy. The plan, through the Senator is more throughly explained. Flash back to the first plot and you see the Chinook get attacked and they lose half of the soldiers on the Chopper. In fact two guys get tossed out and that leads to the third plot.
Third plot see A professor played by Robert Redford talking to a student about his lack of attention and attendance to his class. He explains to the student about two former students. Those two are the Soldiers who got tossed out of the Chopper. So, now all three plots are connected.
I won't go into further detail, but in the end it shows the backroom politics, the way news organizations manipulate the information, and how the soldiers are the ones mostly effected by all of this.
Its ugly, its thought provoking, and its an enjoyable movie. The music is subtle, yet effective. Cinematography is awesome. Thank god Robert Redford belives in steady cam and seeing all of the action taking place.
Surprisingly, Tom Cruise in the beginning sounded almost like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. Not a bad thing, but very similar using almost the same exact lines from when Caffey is interogating Jesup on the stand. The only thing missing was Merryl Strep saying ... I want the truth.
Overall, I would give it 3 out of 5. Not shitty, but its a movie not everyone will like. Not because it leans one way or another. Just some people might not like a political drama.
Niger, please. I <3 Huckabees is fun. You know those people who are apt to have their minds totally fucking blown, man by things like, I dunno, I <3 Huckabees? Well, those goofballs are really fun to hang out with. Turns out, they make great movie characters, too. So they made a movie about people who would be floored by I <3 Huckabees and called that movie I <3 Huckabees.
I <3 Huckabees is so fucking goofy, i don't know how you would see it as anything but fun biscuits.
I <3 Huckabees is every hilarious and awesome conversation that has ever happened within the confines of an Intro to Philosophy class stapled to the back of Jason Schwartzman and jetpacked into the radosphere.
watched a movie called Chaos today, has Wesley Snipes and Jason Statham in it. It was pretty sweet
The Hurt Locker. I liked it a lot.
I was expecting some pretentious bullshit from that movie when I saw it way back when, but yeah, it's too silly to be taken seriously as some treatise on existentialism or whatever the fuck. I rather like it.
Mark Whalberg's sense of wide eyed wonderment is hilarious in that movie.
Not exactly a film, but I finished Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Despite not having a real firm grasp on the whole Laughing Man thing, I thought it was a brilliant, brilliant show. Except for those damn annoying Tachikomas.
It's right up there with Bebop and Mushi-shi IMO.
Tachikomas are cute =3
but they are better in the sub. The US dub is kind of annoying imo
Julia and Julia. It reminded me of Finch. And Julia Childs talks and looks like a 80 year old TS that had a stroke.
Legion. Terminator + Max Overdrive + zombies + Prophecy = movie not as good as any of the previous movies. Well, maybe better than Max overdrive.
Ramones: It's Alive 1974-1996
4 or 6 hours of ramones. Great dvd set. ONE TWO THREE FOUR !
Whatever Works - why do people like Woody Allen? He writes like he's never step foot out of his apartment in twenty years.
Little Shop of Horrors - every time I watch this, it gets better.
District 9 - fell asleep 40 minutes in. what a boring ass movie.
The Hurt Locker - not enough bombs
Adventureland - a couple of laughs but really forgettable
Lost seasons 1-4 - I watched halfway through the 1st season originally and fell out of it until I could watch it properly. February 2nd can't come fast enough. I'm 6 episodes into season 5 atm.
To keep up with Dyne, I started Glenngary Glennross last night and fell asleep about halfway through. I hate salesmen, and sales managers, it's hard for me to relate to any of these assholes.
I'll finish it tonight.
It's pretty dry except for Alec Baldwin coming in and completely wrecking shop. Which is amazing.
BTW, his Saturday Night Live appearances from that era hold up really awesomely! Canteen Boy's scout master and such.
When I worked in England I had to deal with sales people or wannabe salespeople all the time. It was basically my job to make sure their sales were legit and they weren't being crooked scumbags. You wouldn't believe some of the shit some of these people tried to pull. False signatures, false claims, blatant lies--and then they'd get mad at me for calling them out and making them lose their commission.
In any case, even Alec Baldwin reminded me of the head of sales, who was a giant duplicitous prick and walked around treating everyone like he was king shit because he had a fancy phone and could sucker people into buying crap they didn't need.
So you were Jack Lemmon, basically.
I was never in sales or that desperate. I just thought it was all kind of stupid. I actually kind of enjoyed my job of ruining salespeople/telemarketers days, in retrospect.
Mr K is more like Kevin Spacey.
