The "I Just Watched..." Thread

House of the Devil - Arjue was right about this movie, though I expect that I liked it more than he did. There's something about slow burn suspense that I really enjoy. The balls it takes to stretch suspense for as long as that movie does impresses me to no end, and I'm such a sucker for it. I was on edge the entire movie just... waiting... for... something... to... happen.... Hell, it actually kind of falls apart when something does happen. The whole thing reminded me of movies like The Sentinel, where it's mostly just quiet suspense the entire movie. Of course The Sentinel kind of sucks, and this movie doesn't. It manages to exploit style and improve on it at the same time without being an ironyfest. I'm just impressed that it managed to make this scene (which was my favorite) nail bitingly edgy:

I thought House of The Devil was great, but i didn't feel like the payoff gave justice to the build of tension. It was a 9/10 for the first two thirds though.

I watched Cape Fear tonight. This is the best unintentional comedy I've ever seen. Seriously. The first half is all SWOOPY CAMERA FAST TALKING SEXY RACQUETBALL and then it just gets so fucking silly and stupid by the end that Robert DeNiro sinking into the water going HOBEGLOBEDYBLOGHEDOBLYBOOGLADOGBLA seems perfectly normal. The point where the scales tipped into retard land involves DeNiro dressing up like a maid and strangling Mr. Southern Drawl because he noticed the dancing teddy bear. Then the nigger ties himself to the bottom of their car and goes for a trip to the boat docks because he wants to hump on 15 year old Juliet Lewis. The best part about all of this is that this is, I think, supposed to be a Very Serious Movie.

Fucking hilarious. Eleven stars.

Terminator Salvation wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. There were tons of plot holes and some wtf moments but over all I enjoyed it.

Episode 1 of The Pacific. Took some time to get going but I'm always impressed with HBO's production values for historical series.

Watching season two of the original Transformers cartoon. Good lord, I had forgotten how bad some of these episodes were written. The Frankenstein episode is just ridiculous. Now I'm watching the one where they make an alligator out of parts of optimus.

Repo Man - Great fun ride until last 5 fucking minutes, that kinda ruined it. Still hard kicking, gory vision of the future in a way of EQ.

Blue Steel - Kinda on Bigelow kick, going through her older stuff. Cop thriller that turns into fucking slasher flick, with Ron Silver going nuts. Not too bad.

Peacemaker - George Clooney the action hero, chasing evil Russians stealing nukes. Silly but decent time killer.

Leon - The Professional - Always and forever great. Nothing else needed to be said.

I just watched Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and it was completely different to what i was expecting. Its pretty fucking awesome, and it further cements the fact that Sam Rockwell is fantastic.

The international version gives so much more. It plays more on the relationship between Leòn and Matilda. Heart wrenching IMO.

I've watched a few movies recently

The Squid and the Whale - I don't really have a lot to say about this movie. I rather liked it, which is impressive considering all of the characters are such astounding jackasses.

Piranha - Silly. Roger Corman movies never go as far as I want them to. When I see a bunch of genetically engineered piranha heading for a bunch of kids swimming, I want to see at least one get the blender treatment rather than picking at their legs like a bunch of pissed off minnows. I suppose I got that later with the adults. I always have it in for the kids in these movies.

A Serious Man - Very good. I'm sure I didn't connect with it all that well considering a general lack of exposure to jewish culture. I liked the ending quite a bit and how it ties to a kind of Job retelling, but that explanation of the ending seems a bit too tidy. It seemed that he had gotten his life straight as A Serious Man, only to fudge it by succumbing to the money in his desk, which pissed God (I guess) off. I don't really like my interpretation, but it's all I have for now. I'd like to see it again, frankly.

I've watched twenty movies in the last seven days. Few highlights:

Treeless Mountain - A less intense, Korean-sibling version of the brilliant French drama, Ponette. Plus grilled grasshoppers. 4/5

Repo Man: I felt like a P.O.W. undergoing merciless torture watching this movie, begging, PLEADING for it all to be over. 1/5

Paper Moon: Watched 'cause Finch said it was one of his favorites. Was indeed quite charming. I couldn't tell if Tatum O'Neal was a boy or girl for like the first 30 minutes. 4/5

Deadgirl: Soooo messed up. 3/5

The Lost: Holy crap, that's some intense violence. Last 20 minutes bumped it up a star. Main psychopath dude has pizazz and occasionally channels Tom Cruise. 4/5

The Visitor: "It's all hand-made." -Walter. Was this the most adorable line of any movie, ever? I think yes. 4/5

The Station Agent: This made me want to take a trip on a train. 4/5

Fitzcarraldo: Er. 3/5

No Impact Man: "Cuteness is nature's procreation propaganda, battling evolved mankind's pesky birth control and good sense." I had that realization while watching. 4/5

Fall From Grace: lol, these nuts are making me thirsty. Wait, that's supposed to be pretzels. Anyway, what the hell. Seriously, what the frick. I forget there are people like this in the world. 4/5

11 Minutes Ago: No, no, no, not on my watch. Shot entirely in 14 hours and it shows. I love time travel stories, but this one misses the mark in many ways, although I feel sorry for it, so I won't trash it in detail. Or maybe Primer has just set the bar too high. 2/5

Limbo: Sweet god, what did I do to deserve this. Every single thing about this movie was horrible horrible horrible. Every single thing. 1/5

Netflix removing -- or at least hiding -- the Friends commenting and scoring system is utter balls. There's a workaround, but still.

A Serious Man was shit.

I watched Cannibal Holocaust for the first time yesterday. I really wanted to dislike the film, but there is no denying its a very well made movie. The real animal violence was horrible, and made the well executed fake violence seem much more real.

I want to mention that anyone who hasn't seen Bronson is a giant faggot.

I watched some of that Princess and the Frog and i liked it a lot more than i thought i would! It was really good!

Edge of Darkness (Martin Campbell)

I don't know anything about the BBC television series this movie was adapted from, so my opinion might be a little unfair, but this movie was kind of lame. All I knew was that Mel Gibson's daughter gets killed, so I was expecting "Taken 2" or "Mad Max Returns" but all it really offers is Mel Gibson kind of moping around. Some of the violence scenes were well-done, though, like when the daughter gets hit with the shotgun and the friend gets nailed by the car.

Unfaithful (Adrian Lyne)

This one started off pretty well. I liked how it didn't offer any justification for Connie to cheat on her husband. It was interesting to see how far she goes with the affair. But then it takes a weird turn into let's-see-if-Richard-Gere-gets-away-with-murder and lost all of its appeal. I also kept expecting Malcolm and Reese to appear whenever the son was on-screen.

I watched my first Ong-Bok movie, don't even remember which one, but it was alright.

Twilight Samurai

Probably one of the best Samurai films I've seen in a while.

I watched The Lives of Others and found out why it upset Pan's Labyrinth at the Oscars that year that it did that.

Then I watched The Third Man and found out why a lot of people call it the best movie ever. It's pretty much Casablanca: The Not Fucking Around Anymore Cut.

It's all downhill movie-wise from here.

Third Man is amazing. Watch Touch of Evil sometime, it's another Wells flick, not quite as amazing as Third Man, but pretty damn rad.

I have, and love both.

Heavy Metal Parking Lot - I saw this in a documentary film class when I was in film school, and I just saw that it was on Hulu now. It's really great. It's just some dudes filming the people in the parking lot outside of a Judas Priest concert in the 80's, asking them some questions about why they like metal, etc.

It's only 15 minutes, and is pretty entertaining.
