Just watched Taxi Driver, and I sorta feel the same way about this movie as I do the hurt locker. They were both really good character pieces that were so heavy I don't want to watch either for a long long time. But I'm glad I watched it, really great film.
The other movie I watched was Eraser Head, and it wasn't anything at all like I expected. But I think I liked it, I don't have a burning desire to see it again but the feel and look of the movie were intense and worth experiencing. I know cutting anything would have trampled over Lynch's vision etc. But as an enjoyable viewing experience I think it would have benefited from being about twenty minutes shorter. Just cutting out a lot of the silence and pauses again I'm sure every frame was needed to truly capture the vision blah blah blah. But some brevity might have made this better for me, I'm down for a movie that's nothing but strange shit as long as it doesn't drag too much.

Pretty good. I was not expecting the plot to get so mature. There were a lot of episodes dedicated to the sadness of war, and japan after WWII. The ending is just sad and short. Fuck, the show is just sad. The theme of loss and regret is in like every other episode.

OK, so I'm in to the 2nd season. For a teen drama, it's really fucking good. They throw some bad punches every now and then The Sid episode of season 2 is absolutely amazing all the way through, but they fucking ruin it at the end by having Cassie and Sid miss each other AGAIN! wtf? It was fine as it was. stop repeating shit, assholes. But overall, it's well done and I appreciate how they follow through with the events in previous episodes and leave the characters to deal with it.Quote:

The Squid and The Whale: Felt like a typical Wes Anderson film, which I guess makes sense since he was involved somewhere in there. Same old stuff - mopey people that think they're smarter than the decisions they make, messed up relationships, and fetishistic behavior or weird sexual stuff, none of which that gets laid on too heavily. It has some funny bits and Laura Linney was great as the mother (casting all around was pretty good), but there's nothing particularly noble about the story.
The Road: I'm sure there must be some discussion here about this. Really phenomenal post-apocalyptic film. Very slow paced, extremely gloomy, I guess I'd call it a survival/devotion story. A father (Viggo Mortensen) and his son travel through an American wasteland where all food and animals are gone and many have resorted to cannibalism. There's really very little to the story, and there's a couple cop-out scenes, but it's shot brilliantly and creates an oppressive, moody atmosphere that's great to dwell in if you're in the mood.
I've been watching The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO On Demand. I love it. Karl is my hero. I want to be just like him when I grow up.
Did you see what he wrote for Ricky in Time Magazine? Hilarious. He reminds me of Spaz from Opie and Anthony circa 1998.
Apollo 13, The Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, all on Blu Ray. Very nice. Though the Matrix cheaped out on the menu, which is really strange considering the case for the disk is a really nice book lookin thing.
Ron Howard's directors commentary on Apollo 13 was actually quite enjoyable to listen to as well. Seems he cast everyone in his family in the movie in some part or another, not just his brother.
I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to relate to any of the characters in the movie, maybe the oldest son once he realizes that his dad is a complete tool and stops trying to be like him. The humor stems from everyone being so remarkably full of shit.Quote:

My opinion of Sherlock Holmes remains as strong as from the time I first saw it. An amazing film and now I have to say with a re-watch. Its one of the best films of 2009. Strong story, great character development, and the musical score is worthy of purchase. Hans Zimmer out did himself on this film. The last track alone was 10 minutes in length with no rest and changes tempo a few times. Amazing.

Finished the Effy episode of Skins, Season II. Three episodes left. It was good, but the one before it, Tony, is by far the best episode in the series, even better than the Sid and Series Finale episodes of Season I. I'm surprised at how well they've followed through with it and kept the stories going, but I doubt they'll be able to pull off an end as complete as they did in the last one.

I tried to watch The Brave Little Toaster last night.
After reading many of you wax nostalgic concerning this movie, I decided to see what all the fuss was about.
I think this is another example of, if you didn't see it when you were a kid, don't bother seeing it.
The animation was barely T.V. quality and kinda trippy at times (when Blanket was daydreaming that Master was approaching, and the kid just floated out of the car). Even with Lovitz and Hartman providing voices, it wasn't enough draw to keep me watching, and I had to turn it off.
Also: It's not the movies fault, but for a Disney published DVD, the transfer was atrocious. There was dot crawl and shit in the titles. It looked like a third generation VHS copy.
Avatar. I can see why this movie would be amazing in 3D. It was pretty underwhelming otherwise.
The Accused. I couldn't watch the full rape scene. Jodi Foster was amazing in this movie.
In the last few days I've watched Twin Peaks seasons 1 and 2 and Fire Walk With Me. I think its probably the best TV show ever made, and Fire Walk With Me punctuates the series nicely.

A lot of people feel angry at the movie, but i really liked it. Apparently it was boo'd at by its audience at Sundance or Cannes, which is ridiculous. The way the last episode ends is such a gut punch without a third season. The very small details about Dales fate eluded to in Fire Walk With Me are just not enough.
You're absolutely right about the recasting. I can't even imagine how disturbing the bar scene would be with Lara Flynn Boyle still playing her. I think the biggest issue with the film is that it doesn't feel like Twin Peaks until about half way through. I like Kiefer Sutherland and Chris Isaak, but they just don't fit in that universe.Quote:

Noticed Jurassic Park was on HBO indemand and, since I just finished the book, gave it a go since it's been years.
The first half was great, the second half sucked and didn't follow anything from the book.
...but the T-Rex hollering after fucking up those Raptors at the end while the "When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earf" banner flaps by the camera was FUCKING WAY AWESOME.

I didn't even notice everyone was talking about this before I posted it. Kiefer Sutherland did great actually, he was one of my favorite characters in the movie. I thought the Laura Palmer stuff was a bit overdone. I did like the showdown between the one armed man and bob in the cars with the screaming, that was very eerie. Dale was underused, but I suppose the was necessary, he couldn't have been a main character in the movie.Quote:

I watched
Seven Samurai- The best movie ever made. It has surpassed Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Rashomon- I wasn't happy that Mifuné was a derelict. He needs to be the scruffy good guy in every Japanese movie. Otherwise good!
Stray Dog- Also good! The lead samurai from Seven Samurai came back to life as a pohlice, and Sanjuro is his student pohlice.
Samurai Rebellion- Not Kurosawa, but not bad! Most of the movie was slow, but Mifuné kicking ass is always good. guns should be illegal because of this movie. if it weren't for guns, Mifuné would never die or get shot and almost die. Swords are okay. Fight everyone with a sword, it's cool.
The Good, The Bad, and the Weird- A Korean western movie that's a lot of fun to watch! Lots of gun fighting and knives and blowing up.
And
Magnificent Seven- I wish i hadn't known it was a Seven Samurai remake, because it would've been a real surprise. It stands really well on its own, and its way funny seeing how similar it is to Seven Samurai, down to Mifuné's player looking and acting like him. Are the sequels any good? I really like that Yul Brynner fellow. I wish he hadn't died from smoking cigarettes.
I watched The Good, The Bad, and the Weird, it was good.
He didn't even try to retcon! It's like "He's dead! RUN BECAUSE WE'RE NEXT!" and then the next book opens with him speaking to a class or something. He's got a limp and nothing is ever mentioned about the first book. Really confusing.Quote:
