About a Boy (Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz)

What a terrific movie. It's a nice story about never being too old to grow up, with a good balance of comedy and drama.I love the awkward style of humor. The characters are also really great. Will is such a likeable asshole that you can't help but root for him even if he's being a self-centered jerk, and Marcus is so awkward that you feel embarrassed just watching him. I didn't really know what to expect out of it, but I came away extremely pleasantly surprised.

I really enjoyed the book (and the soundtrack), I mean to see that soon.

What the fuck? Why is half the movie sub-Final Fantasy CGI now? The problem was never the visuals, the problem was that nothing at all happens in the movie...


Black Dynamite

You bet your sweet ass and half a titty.

Wolfman - Not too bad. Cool fx and gore and Del Toro vs Hopkins wolfman super battle.

The Nest - French somewhat of remake of Assault on Precinct 13. Very cool.

The Fall. Visually striking and had an interesting story device, but ultimately super long winded and aimless.

Bullet Ballet - Very striking and stylish film by the Director of Tetsuo: The Iron Man. The first half an hour or so is utterly fantastic but unfortunately the film gets lost in itself. Definitely makes me want to check out more of his stuff though.

Knight and Day was rad as fuck up until the train scene. I suppose I should use the term striking to make this a triple threat for gay movie descriptions in a row. Everything after the train lost a little pizazz, but it was still good.

Agreed about Diaz looking busted. They should have swapped her role with the hot spanish chick Roy uses to negotiate with the arms dealer (Naomi?)

Meh. It wasn't terrible but nothing particularly moving.

Micmacs- Not Jeunet's best film, but still worth watching if you like Delicatessen and City of Lost Children! I feel like this is his most unapologetically French film.

I saw a poster for that at a local theater but didn't realize it was Jeunet. I am now intrigued.

Also: I've never seen Delicatessen.

Her skin got crushed by tanning. I've seen some close ups that aren't movie stills and she's horrifying.

Watched The Descent 2 on Friday. Surprisingly decent sequel for a film that didn't need one. Couple excuses to drip body fluids in peoples mouths and lol at the shitting pool.

Bean is probably my least favorite Atkinson character and I hated this movie the first time I watched it. But my daughter wanted to watch it so I threw it in. I really liked it this time. I still don't like The Comedy of the Stupid, but I liked how pompous DaFoes character was and Sabine and the boy were (to steal a popular word on this page) charming.

Watched Total Recall again: God this movie is so fucking good. Totally forgot the line, "So what have you been feeding this thing?" "Blondes." was from it, and I also forgot how hot Sharon Stone was back then. I tried to convince my friends to follow up with Commando, but they were not down for that tonight and it made me sad.

Blue Gold. A documentary about privatization of water. It just reinforced beliefs I already held, but was still interesting. If you're interested in the topic, it's well done and on netflix instant.

I've been watching short social engineering films from the 50's and 60's. They are fucking fascinating.

I will agree it was not good. I will agree that M. Night must have to the power to suck talent right out of his actors, BUT:
1) Zooey was in it, even if she was pretty crappy and seemed unnatural through out. The only scene where the Zooey I Know And Love kinda showed through was the very end when she was in the bathroom.
2) It was no where near as awful as Lady in The Water.

M. Night and Kevin Smith have a lot in common.

Next up is STRIKING DISTANCE!
The worst Bruce Willis movie ever? Possibly! It already loses points for having Horse Face McGee in it.

I love car chases where bumpers and hub caps fall off and reappear every ten seconds!

I finally watched this! I'll post extended thoughts in the thread, but it was super-cool. Some really neat shots. I expect it's going to get a really terrible Donnie Darko following if/when it gets released over here.

I suspect they'll bury it in the fall or some weirdo time, if it even gets a theatrical release.

Got home in time to catch the last hour of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Such a great movie that's been often imitated but never matched, let alone surpassed.
Now I'm watching Louie C.K.'s new show. Pretty funny.

Just finished the Eccleston season of Dr. Who. It was pretty rad, people told me to skip it, but I liked it.

On to Tennant and widescreen, hooray.

I liked Eccleston more than Tennant.

Tennant's still pretty good, though. Matt Smith's been good right off the bat.

I was going through my instant queue and notice a big back-log of movies I added like a year and half ago and haven't watched yet. So I watched one of the movies that's been sitting there and sitting there: Silent Running.

It was thoroughly okay. It had some affecting moments, but over all it was a bit lifeless and forgettable. You can see where Moon (and MST3k, obviously) got inspiration from it, but both do way more with the subject.

I don't understand not watching that first series! Pretty much every plot going on in the Tennant years has at least some basis in what's going on there. Your brother might not be any good at "fiction".

He looked completely lost until the end. You can tell he's not good at jamming so he was a bad choice to go along with Page and White. Towards the end he seemed to loosen up and work with them, though.

I saw It's Complicated. It's okay. Tried to watch Whatever Works, but even Larry David couldn't save it for me. Beautiful Girls is very good. Just finished watching Peyton Place and it's good, though obviously not as shocking or scandalous as it was decades ago when released.

Larry David is funny as Larry David, not Woody Allen. For that, this movie fails.

Hardcore - Paul Schrader working out his religious/daddy issues with George C Scott. I liked it though, better than 8MM which, if I remember correctly, is the exact same movie.

I've seen Primer a few times now and I still get lost right around when the failsafe machine gets introduced. Then I don't know how many of who has been where and when.

I just get confused as to what Black-haired guy's intentions were after you find out he took the failsafe back. I get what happens and when... I just don't know why he ends up obsessing over saving the girl... is it just because he wants to become a "hero"?

Gah! Don't call it a horror movie (even though I did just that earlier in the thread). There is murder and some gore, yes, but I'd put it much closer to Memento than, say, The Strangers (which the cheesy and misleading cover may remind you of).

I don't usually rate horror movies highly so when Netflix predicted 4-stars from me I ignored the cover and gave it a whirl. I don't know, it's not a masterpiece (some bothersome plot holes), but I thought it was pretty darn cool and it made me smile with a few "A-ha!" moments. It takes a bit of work from the viewer (like Primer) which I appreciate.

It has some Groundhog Day-ness to it, yes. I didn't want to say that because it's kinda spoilerish. The main reason I liked it was because it genuinely surprised me.

The Bermuda Triangle is referenced in the Netflix synopsis, either erroneously or as a red herring.

One thing: the bodies stacked up because we're seeing like the 20th iteration of a loop, but at which point does she lose her memory of the events? She sleeps on the cab and remembers enough to lie about her son and apologize to the main dude, but then forgets by the time they board the ship. Is it from her second sleep? Also, all the dead things were stacking up and that was cool, but what happened to the corpse of that main dude in the theater? Did she drag that away? And most of the stuff she saw happen repeated itself with her in the killing role except she never stabbed the dude in the mirror room and she was never hacked with an axe by her earlier version... so I guess she's constantly trying different shit to get out of the loop. Makes sense.

One corner of the Bermuda Triangle is close to southern Florida, I guess.

Also, I want to see Primer. :(

Primer is really fucking good. But you have to watch it about 3 times for it to even start making any sense.

Don't read this if you actually intend on watching Triangle at some point:

My interpretation is she loses her memory and restarts the loop fresh the moment she decides to board the boat instead of returning to the cab. The cab driver is some grim reaper-like dude who is supposed to escort her out of life and she "cheats death" by not going back (remember he asks her before she gets out, "You'll come back, right?"), hence her punishment of eternally rolling the rock uphill like that Greek mythology guy the ghost ship is named after.

As for the inconsistencies you mention, I don't know. It could be she's trying different stuff every time like you said, but I sort of got the impression there were three distinct repeating paths the different versions of her were taking -- one where she has no idea what's going on, the second where she does but doesn't want to kill anybody, then the third where she puts on the mask and starts murdering -- and then those three paths are stuck in a loop and account for everything that happens on the ship. It does shore up some plot holes if there are many variations of her actions on the ship with some overlapping (i.e. while she doesn't always deal with everyone the same way, she ALWAYS drops the necklace down the grating, the one girl ALWAYS crawls to around the same place to die resulting in the stacks of bodies, etc.).

I could very well change my mind about things if I watched it again. I couldn't find any discussions on the web to confirm or debunk my theories unfortunately as I'd be interested in hearing others' interpretations.

My favorite part by far was the sledgehammer scene at the end. Seeing the scene of her crying, holding her son again, but this time knowing why the kid was so freaked out (having just witnessed his mom bludgeon another version of herself to death) was awesome. In fact that whole final act was a surprise and made the movie for me. I figured it would end with her washing up on shore without much resolution.

Alice in Wonderland - WTF, I seriously fell asleep few time in the middle. While some of the style was cool, rest was perfect case of Burton MEH.

Clash of the Titans - Jake Sully joins Ancient Greek Marines to kick Kraken's ass. Not too bad, some of the effects and action was pretty cool.

Predators - Great time at the movies. See more in the original thread, and go fucking SEE it.

Se7en - How come I never seen this before, until now.

Needless to say ... it was awesome.

Balls of Fury - fucking hilarious. "The road to wisdom is long and difficult, so that's why most turn out to be assholes."

The Last Airbender- Not very good, but i didn't completely hate it. Fuck if i remember anything about it besides liking the Fire Nation ships and Uncle, but i didn't hate it.

Despicable Me- SO good! Please go see it if you like good movies! I know half of TNL is like "I ONLY LIKE GROWN UPS MOVIES", but if you fall outside of that and appreciate a good animated movie, you will like, maybe even love this one.

Predators - It was a lot of fun! I like how they just throw you into the movie without a lot of unnecessary setup (because who cares it's Predator 5).

I wish that Fishburne's rad looking BFG laser gun would have been used, but maybe it's better just imagining what it could have done.

True Lies - Still good! I like the little things in this movie, like Charlton Heston's Nick Fury eyepatch, or Arnold saying "sorry" every time he causes property damage.

I watched Shutter Island and can't believe people were actually debating the ending. It's story is completely explained by the end of it and the ending isn't even really open.

I'm going to sit here and spoil the movie for anybody who hasn't seen it. Right out in the open - Yes. A lot of people think he was insane again. He wasn't. He pretended he was insane to get lobotomized. He couldn't live with the memory of his wife killing his children, and him killing her for revenge.

Yes. People are retarded and think he might have regressed into his fantasy again, but he's just pretending he did because he can't live what he did. It was much more cut and dry than the debate surrounding it led me to believe it would be.

Just watched Manhunter. I wasn't expecting it to be so 80s. Manhunter didn't have anyone eat a fucking William Blake painting, so it wins over Red Dragon automatically.

American Splendor. Decent movie but having been a fan of the comics for over 20 years I can say it falls pretty fucking far short.

Quarantine. Pretty good. They did a nice job of ratcheting up the tension in the 3rd act. It's on instant until the 15th. It's worth your time.

Fuck that, go watch the much better spanish movie REC that Quarantine is another shitty US remake of.

Calm down; they're both good. The remake is quite faithful.

And completely unnecessary.

Just watched the Arthur Penn flick "Night Moves". Just a bare sketch of a story, no real ending, sort of gets by on mood alone. I think I liked it. Hackman's really good in it, does his Gene Hackman thing.

There's a MacGuffin, and you never really know what it is.
