Gamespot Reviewer Fired after Poor Review for Sponsor's Game

The review was edited after the fact. There was also a video review that was a bit harsher, pulled off the site as soon as the story broke. You can find it on youtube, I'd imagine.

But really, he gave a 6 to a game that had several hundred thousand dollars of adspace reserved on Gamespot at the time of the review. That's what did it.

You work for the hot dog cart, you don't piss off the company buying ad-space on your little hot dog cart umbrella hanging over your head.

I think the support from this guy comes mainly from people who consider video game enthusiast mags to be 'journalism'. GameSpot's been bought and paid for since before the first advertising "skin" was plastered all over the site.

sadly this happens with the straight media as well. Reporters get sent out on assignment to come back with a favorable story about business man X's charity or Y's new product.

Hell even NPR got busted for at least censoring stories on ADM (i think) because they were a huge donor at some point. The fact there is a huge shit storm about this shows that the gaming community has more integrity than the average media consumer.

yes it could be unprofessional behavior tool, but the plebs aren't buying that.

That would have never happened on Edge.

Maybe gaming companies should sell themselves to another means of advertising (movies, nerd stuff) to help alleviate the pressure put on them from gaming companies. Stop tying yourself to the people you're trying to hold accountable. Anyway you slice it this firing is dumb. I mean his reviews probably sucked anyway (most game review do) but he'll just replaced with the next greasy, overweight gamer with a loose grip on English knocking at the door. Is it even legal to fire someone for this reason?
