Today, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer told an audience in Tokyo that Remote Play is only the beginning of the PS3's external connectivity. The Bloomberg news service reports that the Welsh executive--the first Western-born CEO in Sony's history--said his company plans to eventually link up the PS3 to mobile phones and a range of other unspecified electronics. The specific mention of phones resurrected longstanding rumors that Sony is readying a PlayStation-branded phone much like its Bravia TV-branded Sony Ericsson mobile.

The drive for mobile phone-to-PS3 connectivity will be part of Sony's next three-year business plan, which starts on April 1, 2008. That date also marks the start of Sony's next fiscal year, which Stringer predicts will see a massive expansion of the PS3's online service, the PlayStation Network.

"PlayStation Network next year puts us in the direct line of fire with Apple and Microsoft," Stringer told the Reuters news service, obliquely referencing iTunes and Xbox Live. He also dropped hints, which reinforced previous Sony statements, that the year would see many assets in the company's massive content portfolio appear on PSN. "On Friday, we had a dinner where the heads of Sony Electronics, [Sony] Pictures, Sony BMG, and Sony PlayStation were all at the same dinner table intermingled and actually communicating," he said.

I'll take that along with some damn demo's of downloadable games on PSN. I knew PSN wasn't near XBL status, but damn that is a huge dissapointment to me. I'm half tempted to take the thing back, the only bright spot is the upscaling of PS2 games.

Not really, It's just the fact that we now have these things and it makes the experience so much better. Sure, Sony could add most of these features and over time they probably will.

Phil Harrison showed that off last year, and with Wipeout Pulse now using PSN logins for stat tracking, leaderboards, ghost downloads, ect (just like xbox live does) and Home coming out early next year, PSN will have the facelift its needed.

you mean the whole home space home lounge ect that YOU DONT HAVE TO USE?!?!?! Zomg! Homes core features are accessable through XMB, which includes messaging, cross game invites, friends list, ect.

Where did that article mention it would be free? It's either going to cost, like Live, or they're going to microtransaction the shit out of you, like the VC.

home is free, if you wanna buy new t-shirts and a bigger home space, its no different then themes for your dash, which you dont have to buy, and doesnt hinder online play whatsoever. Home Trophies also include custom clothing for your avatar when you accomplish certain goals.

You said that the microtransactions were like the VC, implying that XBL wasn't exactly the same.

I agree with you that Home will have to have one or the other. It just takes a special kind of piece of shit company to pull both.

I'm not sure where you're headed with the Stringer thing. Sony has dropped the ball like 27 times in two years and will still end this generation on top. That says a lot more about Microsoft not knowing how to play with a lead than it does about Sony.

We have 3+ years left in this generation. MGS4 is only one factor. The Wii aging like ass will help the PS3 immensely in Japan as well, for instance.

I HOPE they eventually come out with some titles I have to own, because not being excited at all about a third of this generation kinda sucks. Wasted potential.

I buy human weapon and a few other shows, but due to limited hard drive space I can't do much. I like watching things in HD, and two bucks an episode isn't bad. Especially with how much the history channel dvds cost.

Home is retarded, but if it translates into the feature set of the XMB offering everything Home aims to, then put that shit out asap pls.

I will say though, that I really like the PS Store thus far. Obviously it doesn't have the quantity of content XBLM does or the library of retro stuff the VC has, but the pricing is far and away the best of the three, and in general the content offered on PSN is of a higher level of quality than the average thing on XBLM imo. I like the organization/navigation more, too.

They could make a plug-in UMD drive, kinda like the good old Super Gameboy. I was actually hoping for just that, before the Slim. Hell, I'd still like it, since the Slim still doesn't let you plug in a PS2/3 controller.

Theoretically, PS3 could upscale and maybe let you play with the PS3 controller (wireless + not as shit analog). I'd appreciate it, 'cause PSP slim only outputs a 480p signal and only through component--I'm still in the superior dark ages and my TV doesn't do progressive scan, so it just doesn't work at all for me. It's also silly that something that should be so quick to plug and play is incompatible with 95% of TVs' front inputs.

I don't expect PSP games on PS3 to happen, though. But then I didn't expect the ability to turn on your PS3 through your PSP over the Internet either, so who knows what kooky things Sony'll do.

Yes, it's deplorable how so few of the downloadable games on PSN have demos available. Funny thing is, for the first three months they all had demos, but after flOw and Q*Bert came out in February without demos, only about 20% (my estimate) of subsequent PSN downloadable game releases have had demos. They even yanked a demo that was previously available (GripShift). I just can't figure out the logic here.
