I never use that crap in the real world either. And even if I did, that is what TI-89s, MatLab, and a dozen other math platforms, are for.

Agreed. I come from a school of thought where knowing why I should do something always predicates how to do it. I had great difficulty with math until I had a professor who taught this way, and it has since become one of my favorite subjects. Too many math teachers are over-concerned with explaining the how easily at the expense of the why that the whole thing becomes a mess.

Well, math does improve problem solving ability, but again I agree overall. It is absolutely absurd how many BA/BS degrees have no stats requirements.

this has not been my experience. I've known way to many that spend most of their time on the theoretical why, and no time on the how. I mean crap, I've met 30 year old adults who can't factor becuase in a two week period the teacher never actually showed them how. He just spent every class period doing proofs and crap. FACTORING!?!

It's in the family picture, but I'd definitely put the University of Chicago ahead of it. For the Big Ten, I'd probably put Northwestern above it. It's up there with Northwestern, though.

You don't START with |f(x_0)-f(x)| < epsilon, that doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, you shouldn't be doing this type of estimative analysis in calc 1 anyway. Ignore it until M400 and whatever advanced calculus is.
