Producing? I thought he wanted to direct.
Why 2 movies? It's one book.
$$$?
A lot of shit happens in that one book.
It's simple: You shoot the whole movie in slow motion and you'll have to have two.
Wasn't Sam Rami supposedly directing this at some point?
Well, was he or wasn't he?
Lemme help out here.
-Rami was, but there is a hesitancy to give it to him. I personally don't want anyone but Jackson making it, but I'm stubborn that way.
- Its two movies because Jackson intends to include (make up, but in a good way from how it sounds) the stuff that Gandalf was doing while he wasn't with Bilbo (assaulting Dol Guldor, Sneaking around the Necromancer, etc...) Most likely to set up some kind of major fight between the Necromancer and Gandalf, as it is the white council's assault in Tolkien lore isn't as talked about as other fights, but its kind of assumed Gandalf and the Necromancer (Sauron for those who don't know) fought during it.
- This has been held up over the ridiculous legal battle New Line and Jackson were in for payment of himself and his staff for the extra stuff that was put on the extended Dvd.
You forgot to add the Bob Shay completely caved in because of the major flops his studio has had recently, such as Golden Compass, and the very real danger of being kicked to the curb has brought him back to Jackson.
I'm sad to say I heard about this from a girl at work before this thread appeared. Awesome nonetheless.
Sold.
Seriously, they should stop at 3 imo.
So it seems they're lining up Guillermo del Toro to direct these. Brilliant imo.Quote:
[Harry's usual personal life / look at me I'm friends with your favorite filmmakers bullshitting snipped - Gas]
and during that conversation - he suddenly brought up THE HOBBIT and how he wanted to direct it and how he thought it was going to happen.
Well now - the trades are reporting on it. I saw the story up this morning on Hollywood Reporter's Story - the writing on this project has not been OFFICIALLY decided yet, due to the Writer's strike, but apparently Jackson and Guillermo will oversee the script's creation.
They're saying $150 million per film... and I just wonder... is Ron Perlman going to be the voice of Smaug? And will Gollum suddenly become a man in a costume via Doug Jones? (of course not, Andy Serkis will be back)
But you KNOW that Doug Jones is gonna be something awesome in this.
When Guillermo and I talked about it, he spoke very heartfelt about how he had to adhere to what Peter had already established - but how he couldn't wait to expand that universe with the environments, creatures and most especially Smaug. I'm giddy.
Personally I'd want Jackson back. Del Toro is really really good at what he does, and he has this certain style and flair to him, that for something like Hellboy is awesome. I just don't think its a good fit for something from Tolkein.
If Jackson isn't going to direct them I can't think of anyone else I'd like to see do it more than Guillermo del Toro.
I like this idea a lot.Quote:
is Ron Perlman going to be the voice of Smaug?
Hope it doesn't suck.
Beorn iirc, and yeah, Ron Perlman playing him would rock.
I love it.
So why is everyone so excited to have Guillermo del Toro directing? Was everyone really impressed with mimic or something?
Pan's Labyrinth.
Last I heard, Mountains was next on his plate after Hellboy 2. He's been wanting to make it for a long time - kinda like Jackson and King Kong.
Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy show that the guy can handle fantasy. I think he has the visual flair to handle something as rich as The Hobbit. I think it would be fantastic.
Unlike LOTR, The Hobbit is a fairy tale Tolkien wrote for his kids. It's full of bright characters singing songs about history and food - heck, even the goblins spend a lot of their time singing. The dwarves aren't surly like Gimli - they sing a long song about their history when they first appear. Bilbo and Gollum have a riddle contest. Sunlight turns hungry, stupid trolls to stone before any combat commences. Bilbo escapes the elves by hiding in a barrel and drifting down a river. During the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo says "My only hope is to be taken prisoner as quickly as possible."
Not exactly dark stuff.
The creepiest things in the book are the spiders, and they sing too.
Del Toro's films, on the other hand, have always been dark.
I agree with Johnpv that the styles don't match at the moment. It remains to be seen whether Del Toro adapts his style, or the film ends up with the dark tone of the trilogy. I predict the latter.
I've seen pretty much all of the guys movies, aside from pans that is. Any he never struck me as anything special. Maybe pans would really change my mind, but cronos put me to sleep.Quote:
What rock have you been under?
I guess this means he's not in the running for Deathly Hallows, I really wanted him to direct that.
And, confirmed.
Oh, for God's sake.Quote:
Tolkien Trust Suing New Line Over LOTR Films Royalties
Posted by Patrick on 02/12 at 05:21 AM
The estate of J.R.R. Tolkien and HarperCollins Publishers have filed a lawsuit against New Line Cinema, the studio that bankrolled Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy of films. They claim that the studio has failed to pay them gross profit point royalties earned from the three movies as specified in their contracts with New Line Cinema. The duo are seeking recompensation of at least $150 million dollars, additional monies to be derived from punitive damages and “a declaration from the Court that the plaintiffs have a right to terminate any further rights New Line may have to the Tolkien works under the agreements, including The Hobbit, due to the serious and material nature of the breach of the agreements.”
Yeah, you read that right. The Hobbit movies are now in danger of not happening. So how did this all happen?
According to Steven Maier, the lawyer representing The Tolkien Trust, “The Tolkien trustees do not file lawsuits lightly, and have tried unsuccessfully to resolve their claims out of court. But in this case, New Line has left them no option at all. New Line has not paid the plaintiffs even one penny of its contractual share of gross receipts despite the billions of dollars of gross revenue generated by these wildly successful motion pictures. To make matters worse, to date New Line has even prevented the plaintiffs from auditing the last two films of the series. The trustees are very aggrieved by New Line’s arrogance.”
Does this claim strike anyone else as being familiar? Yeeeah...I wonder what Peter Jackson thinks of this. Maybe “Been there, done that?”
And these guys are really mad; listen to what this other lawyer has to say. “New Line has brought new meaning to the phrase ‘creative accounting,’” said Bonnie Eskenazi, one of the American legal councils representing the Tolkien Trust. I cannot imagine how on earth New Line will argue to a jury that these films could gross literally billions of dollars, and yet the creator’s heirs, who are entitled to a share of gross receipts, don’t get a penny.”
With the Writers Guild strike nearly over and it being all-but-official that Guillermo del Toro would direct the two Hobbit movies that New Line and MGM have planned, this could really, really derail all of that.
A room full of execs should get fired over that.
More like pistol whipped and shot after a few hours of beating.
Guillermo officially on board. Does this mean New Line (or rather WB, now that they've lost their independent status) took care of the Tolkien estate matter behind the scenes?
Probably, I would imagine the Tolkein estate wouldn't be allowing it to happen otherwise. I still question if Del Toro's style is right for the world that Tolkein created, and the one that Jackson has put forth already.
If it isn't Jackson behind the camera, Del Toro is the next best guy I think. His movies are gorgeous and he sure as shit knows his way around fantasy elements.
Awesome news.Quote:
The Hobbit: Animatronics, Serkis & McKellen!

The Hobbit - First Edition
TheOneRing.net has a fantastic interview with Guillermo del Toro which is loaded with answers to the questions on all of our minds. First and foremost, del Toro confirms that both Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Smeagol / Gollum) will be back on board for the upcoming pair of prequels.
Del Toro is also recruiting many other crucial ingredients which made the Lord of the Rings trilogy as special as it was.
“I’ve been chatting with a ton of people via email, phone, and in person from the previous films,” says del Toro. “People like Andy Serkis, Sir Ian McKellen, Howard Shore, John Howe, Gino Acevedo, Richard Taylor next week I’m meeting Alan Lee. I’m doing this to ensure that whatever we do we keep continuity with the other films, yes it’s a world that is slightly more golden at the beginning, a very innocent environment. “
Also awesome is the fact that del Toro is planning to keep the story rooted in the Middle Earth we all have come to know and love. Says the director, “There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film’, it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page.”
On whether or not his vision will stray from Peter Jackson’s, del Toro says, “The only thing I will be pushing for more in these films are full animatronics and animatronic creatures enhanced with CGI, as opposed to CGI creatures themselves.”
Very cool stuff. It sounds like del Toro and Middle Earth will go great together. For the entire interview, head over to TheOneRing.net!

McKellen IS BACK For The Hobbit
Date: April 30, 2008
By: Ryan 'The Rican with the Irish name' McLelland
Source: Comcast
I'll finally consider this issue DONE. No more guessing and, ifs, or buts. Surely an official notice will be coming down the pipe but Ian McKellen sat down with Empire Magazine and said the following:
"Yes, it's true," McKellen said - that he is returning to the role.
"I spoke to (director) Guillermo (Del Toro) in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it's not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf."
So there we have it. No more wondering if Del Toro is directing. No more wondering if McKellen is starring. And soup-to-nuts we can believe that Andy Serkis will be back as well.
We can finally put this baby to bed and focus on casting Bilbo Baggins!!!
Fuck yes. This always comes out better than pure CGI.Quote:

See: your avatar.
One thing that always bugged me about LOTR was the way Serkis played Smeagol in the flash back scenes. Why was he talking like Gollum when Smeagol was still "human"? He should have had a normal voice, with the Gollum voice being the result of his physical and mental degeneration due to the ring. I hope he talks normal this time. I can't take a big part of the movie with a regular "human" character talking like that for no reason. But in that case they wouldn't even need Serkis.
Why would he talk normal in this? He's already Gollum in the Hobbit. I don't remember any flashbacks to him before he became Gollum at all in the Hobbit.
Yeah, you don't even find out about his past until LotR, in The Hobbit he's just this weird creature.
lol. Well shit i never read it.
I hope this movie turns out well. My friend Jason might be moving to New Zealand to work with WETA on it!
Guillermo Del Toro is handling this? Less CGI and more Animatronics? Ian McKellen?
If these movies are anything but amazing, there's something off balance in the world.
From UGO:Great news IMO. Jackson, Boyens and Walsh adapted LOTR as well as I can imagine it being done, and if it ain't broke... :)Quote:
Peter Jackson More Involved In ‘Hobbit’
Posted by Cybergosh on 08/20 at 01:31 AM
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro’s search for writers for “The Hobbit” and its companion film has ended, with the filmmakers deciding that no one is better suited for the task than they are.
Del Toro, who is directing the movies, will team with the “Lord of the Rings” filmmaker and “Hobbit” executive producer Jackson to adapt the J.R.R. Tolkien book and write its follow-up. Also joining them in the writers room are Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, both of whom collaborated with Jackson on the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
The news caps off an eight-month search for a scribe to tackle the coveted task of bringing the literary classic to the big screen. When Jackson and New Line resolved their differences over profit participation in the “Rings” films, Jackson said he would not be writing the “Hobbit” movies because of other commitments, though he does have approval over creative elements in his role as exec producer.
Later, when del Toro came aboard, the deal was that the two would oversee the search for scribes and the writing. In the interim, three factors came into play: 1) The filmmakers saw their schedules open up, 2) During the general discussions about the films, they realized how much affection they had for the material, and 3) They also realized that in order to make the release dates, the process required people intimate with Tolkien’s world of Middle Earth. All led to the decision that they would do the honors themselves along with Walsh and Boyens.
“The Hobbit,” written by Tolkien for his children years before the “Rings" trilogy, follows a young Bilbo Baggins, who finds his comfortable life turned upside down when the wizard Gandalf takes him on a journey for a hoard of treasure that involves trolls, humans, Gollum and his ring of invisibility and a dragon named Smaug.
“Hobbit” and its sequel are being co-produced, co-financed and co-distributed by New Line and MGM, with New Line managing production and handling domestic distribution through Warner Bros. and MGM distributing internationally.
The films will be shot simultaneously, with principal photography tentatively set for a late-2009 start. New Line and MGM hope to release “Hobbit” in 2011 and its sequel the following year.
Ozymandias as Bilbo?
I'd love to see an even more over the top fantasy world then what we got in LOTR. The Hobbit always seemed to me to be more playful and more fantasy filled, and I can think of nobody better than Del Toro to bring its world to life. love the sound of animatronics. Always look more real and fit in the world than just pure CGI.
It's going to be pretty hard to make an animatronic dragon not look like a cheap toy.
I don't blame Del Toro, poor guy. How many years of his life is he supposed to give up for these movies?
Shame. I'm not a big LotR fan but I loved The Hobbit as a kid. Del Toro's a great director and I'm sure his adaptaton would have kicked ass and gotten him some major clout.
Watch it again.
That is so cool! If I saw that when I was a kid my face probably would have melted.
As for Del Toro it looked like it was going to take another 3 years to finish this.
That's the newest initiative Disney has going on in the parks. Talking interactive animatronics. The talking trashcan is one thing, but when you get into MML, or youtube Lucky the Dinosaur, you'll see what they're up to. Also of note: There is a C3PO that talks to guests and has an very similar voice to Anthony Daniels.
I know this won't be a popular opinion but I don't mind the fact that Del Toro isn't directing. I love Del Toro and I think he's an amazing director. That said though, he has a very particular style, one that has worked fantastically for the Hellboy movies and Pan's Labyrinth. I just don't think that style would work for the world they've already created in the LotR movies. I think the best thing would be for Jackson to just take the helm himself. Which he said he would do if it comes down to it.
Peter said no, he has other obligations too. On the original production timeline, Jackson was going to make a movie while Del Toro was filming this.
From today "Jackson originally backed off suggestions that he would step in and direct the films as he had on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, though he told a New Zealand newspaper he would explore the possibility if it’s required to get the movie done and protect the studio’s investment. Deadline Hollywood reports that such a move may not be possible given Jackson’s contractual commitment to direct other films for other studios, including the Adventures of Tintin series he is working on with Steven Spielberg."
So he said he would if he had to but it may be difficult.

I want At the Mountains of Madness so bad.
Golden Army was a shit ton better than the original Hellboy movie. Both had amazing character sequences (using prosthetic and puppets!). I don't really think the HB movies do the comics at all justice. The tone is much different in the comics. But different mediums, you know? They were good. Nailed Hellboy himself quite well.
Sorry but Golden Army was a bit too goofy. When he started singing that fucking song? Horrible.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, it's looking more and more like things will be as they always should have.
I've been re-reading it lately and I want it as well, but I'm not sure Del Toro is the one to make it. It's a very psychological thing up until near the end, and I'm not sure can do that slow build up of dread without resorting to freaks. There aren't even actual freaks in the book. Just about all of the action takes place 'off camera,' but the book is so much better for it.
I'd rather see him him Dream of Unknown Kadath, which is full of potent imagery and plenty of freaks. The big battle near the end with the ghouls versus those moon slug things would be perfect for him.
So after several months of uncertainty stemming from MGM's financial woes, this thing is finally greenlit, with PJ at the helm. Del Toro may be gone, but his fingerprints remain in the script, for which he will be credited along with PJ, Fran and Phillippa. Filming starts in february on a single long shoot for both movies, just as LOTR was done a decade and change ago, and release is set for december 2012 & '13.
Casting rumors are already circulating here, but I'm not really familiar with any of the actors named, so I can't comment much.

Nah.
A lot of boring shit.
The Hobbit is action packed compared to LotR.
Then all the better to wait for the movie.
