Sega launched Japanese Mark III / Master System owners into the Algol Solar System in Phantasy Star on December 20th, 1987.

Time flies. I still have my original domestic copy from back then. I recently tried the retranslated rom, too. I will probably play through it some time next year.

Yeah, I still have my original copy, as well. This game completely blew my mind when it came out. It is to this day the greatest gaming experience I've ever had. That had something to do with being naive and 8 or 9 years old, but it doesn't make my memories any less fond.
I also still have my original copy of Phantasy Star. Oldest game I still have.
I still have my 1, 2, and 4 carts... I think I kicked 3 into a trash bin somewhere. Amazing series, probably my favorite through the 8-16 bit generation.
I am currently just starting my play through of the retranslated ROM, with noble intentions of playing through the whole game.Quote:

I don't have my original cart anymore, I've bought and sold that game a dozen times by now, but the last time I played it (about six months ago), the battery still worked. I found that amazing.
I'd play through a remake of IV.
The Remakes of I and II are beautiful, and I'd pay $60 for a remake of IV.
I saw this posted in the digitpress thread and decided to post it here. It makes me nostalgic for early EGM.
I remember that review... was that issue one? I think Shinobi got a Direct Hit! for the SMS in that same issue. I picked up Phantasy Star partially because of that review and because my spoiled best friend had it and it looked amazing.
I remember that issue, too. I think it's from the "pre-EGM EGM" era, when the mag was called Electronic Game Player or something.

My love for this series knows no bounds. I got the first game using all my birthday money when it came out, and I was 11. It took me almost a month to figure out that I had to buy "secrets" several times before you could get the road pass to the space port in Camineet.
Overall it took me almost 6 months to finish it, with almost daily calls to 1-800-USA-SEGA to get the little hint guides they sent out, and other tips.
What a great game and series. HB Phantasy Star.
Yeah, my first EGM was the Buyer's Guide from late '88 which was later than this review (although the guide did use the EGM name despite coming out before issue #1). I missed out on the Electronic Game Player issues and would love to see full scans of them.Quote:

We were all noobs once, even in 88. I had never played an RPG before, and I had no clue what I was doing. I was 10 years old (I thought I was 11 before, but actually, it came out in the US christmas of 88, so I had just turned 10 when I bought it). I was kinda "eh" on PSII, but that probably had to do with the fact that the hint book killed the whole game, and I didnt have as intense of a experience with it.
I actually really liked PS3 because I had no expectations and could enjoy it as its own entity.
PS4 I loved, because it had so many references to the previous games, and the translation was taken seriously for once and made sense. When Chaz has the flash to the heroes from previous games when he takes the sword.
I would love for them to release the remakes of the whole series if only for a consistent translation between them all.
Yup, that's the fake death/dream sequence. PS was my first RPG too, Dragon Warrior kinda blows afterwards.
Don't forget the credits sequence. Admit it, you thought there was another dungeon, if only for a second, and you yelled at your TV as loudly as I did.

A lot of people liked PS III. It got great reviews at the time. The backlash in the gaming media came a few years later. In retrospect, it is the weakest one but I still liked it a lot. They should have made the mutiple endings vary more, though.Quote:

I loved PSIV so much when I played it emulated on the Dreamcast, I got pretty far and I think I just lost the disk I was playing it on :(

I beat it without a guide. I bought it used and the guide was missing. I played about 80% of way through it a couple times back in the day but never beat it until I replayed it a few years ago. It was easily the hardest game in the series.

I got all the ending, but your right, they were very similiar. I'm very happy that they addressed the ships (alisa 3, etc.) in PS4. Strangely, until a few years ago, I had always assumed that PS3 took place long after PS4.
Phantasy Star II was my first of the series; I'd bought PS III around the time I'd bought a Nomad. I don't know what it was, but the game just didn't have the charm of PS II. The music was okay, the graphics looked alright, but together it just felt like a less detailed PS II.Quote:

funny thing is, Phantasy Star III came out in Japan very shortly after PSII came out in the U.S.
