You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Dolemite again.
Some people just don't want to die and will do anything to keep on living, regardless of faith or hope. Others that may be religious will still lose hope, going ahead and giving up, rationalizing that it is the plan of their God for them to do so. And some atheist will just keep going for who knows why.
It is easy to point to religion as giving hope when science can not, but who knows what the truth is. At this point in my life, I think a lot of people do what they're going to do and things like science, religion, etc are just words a lot of people use to put their actions into context for their memories and when talking to others.
Hell, stuff like the bible can be read any whichway, but people use it for shit like hating fags when you could just as easily use it to forgive them. The same sentence that condemns being gay (which was a mistranslation for temple goddess dragqueens, google that one), condemns lying, adulterating, etc, but no one has a problem with those things. Why? Because most people start with their feelings and actions and use their religion to create a personal narrative, not guide them.
Maybe more people would die without the hope religion gives. Maybe not. Maybe some people would die without it and others that currently die, would not.
But religion isn't going anywhere. Nothing has attempted to replace the element of community religion has. As long as old women at church will help a new mother with a baby, we'll have religion. As long as a bunch of old men can get together and pat each other on the back for how bigoted they are, we'll have religion. Science has done a horrible job of building these relationships. Industry and business has done a horrible job of building these relationships. Nothing is replacing it. Me and you wouldn't trust our hypothetical kids to people we met online.

By modern standards, I've been the victim of all sorts of abuse, but none of it was spicy enough to do lasting damage.
