Yes, it really fucking was. Especially for an eReader with the wifi turned off. No good reason for that shit.

The last flight I was on the only electronic device I had was a Turbo Express. The flight was 1 hour longer than the batteries.

most eletronics are harmless to modern equipment. Those rules go back to aircraft having tube equipment that fucking pick up everything. I'm surprised they've kept the rule this long.
