I've been right all along :p
"According to a new study conducted by researchers from Georgia Tech and the University of Lyon, in France, there would rarely be traffic if all drivers behaved the same way. Aggressive drivers, who don't give the car in front of them enough space, and timid drivers, who need a big gap between themselves and the cars surrounding them, gum up the works for everybody else.
The researchers concluded that, on the whole, timid drivers are more of a burden than aggressive ones. And these traffic jams aren't merely frustrating for motorists -- they also lead to increased fuel consumption, more emissions and more accidents.
It kind of makes you want to take the train. Well, it would if, you know, there weren't any other people on it."
Case in point, my commute this morning. Rte 50 West - 3 lanes + hov, 65 mph. When I merge on the highway, there is only one more road connecting to the highway. After that, there's about 5-6 mile stretch of straight driving and a couple hills, no more merging cars. There were no accidents this morning, no construction, just OPEN lanes to drive in. However, traffic was jammed and the highway turned into a parking lot. All of sudden, traffic moves again and you can see the open highway.
Has this ever happened to you? Well, you can thank the timid, slow motherfuckers on the road for creating the problem. Slow drivers are the real problem on the road.
Rte 50 West at 8:15 STOPS somewhere before the rte 2 exit, and by the time you get to the Severn River Bridge, literally less than a mile from it, back to 60+ the same happens on the opposite side, going home around 5:15. I fucking HATE IT. People just forget how to drive for that stretch.
Counterpoint: the cockmonger that drives 30mph faster than everyone weaving in and out of lanes, causing other motherfuckers to slam on their brakes creates traffic. Standing waves, nigga.
Related.
Made a minor edit. I travel West, too.
Glad to see I'm not the only one. People need to get their heads out of their ass when they say there's nothing they can do about traffic jams. The keys to fixing the problem are in their hands (pun intended).
Implying everyone should drive aggressively.
That's the extreme. I see those guys too, and I shake my head. However, slow drivers are the real problem because they're the ones impeding the flow of traffic. I'd bet that if slow drivers stayed where they belong (THE RIGHT LANE), you'd see a decrease in aggressive driving. If not, the cops will find the aggressive ones. I drive nearly 30,000 miles a year, so I see A LOT of shit on the roads.
edit.. btw, that guy is in the left lane driving slower than everyone else. I know that in MD, if you're driving 10mph below the posted speed limit, your ass is getting a ticket. Slow traffic should always stay to the right, while faster traffic stays to the left.
If you're driving 50 in the fast lane on a 65mph highway I am mad as shit at you. If you are driving 50 in the exit lane on a 65mph highway, I don't care.
If you are weaving in and out of traffic doing 90 on a highway, I am hoping you die. If you are doing a steady 65/70 staying in your lane on the highway, I am right there with you.
Chux gets it.
