I just watched Sur la Terre comme au Ciel.
I bought it on impulse because the plot synopsis caught my interest. It's about a woman, a reporter in her late 30s or early 40s, pregnant with her first child. Eventually she carries the baby past due, and when she wonders why, her unborn child speaks to her. He says that he will not be born into such an ugly world, and would prefer to die. She soon learns that she is not alone and other mothers are experiencing the same thing. Where once the unborn optimistically dreamed of being born, now they're filled only with dread.
It was a touching, well-written, and unique movie. The directing and musical score were nothing special, and it suffers somewhat for the mediocre minimalist piano melodrama that underscores it, but it was a sweet, creative movie. Worth watching.
city of men got totally panned :(

which is a shame because city of god was amazing
I think that's about the miniseries, not the movie.
Some of my personal favorites (coincidentally, mostly French).
City of the Lost Children
Triplettes of Belleville
Irreversible
F for Fake
When I think of more I'll post them, those were the first 4 that popped into my head that hadn't already been listed.
I agree with this recommendation. I had to watch it for a film class and absolutely hated it because I had no idea what to expect. I ended up buying it over a year after I initially saw it because I "needed" to see it again, and to this day it's one of my favorite films. Anyone who has any interest in older cinema and hasn't seen this is doing themselves a disservice.Quote:

Oh yeah, while we're talking foreign films, I'd like to restate my love for these two Belgian movies:
Toto the Hero/Toto les Heros
The Eight Day/Le Huitieme Jour
Both really creative, slightly surreal films that are funny, entertaining, and touching. Toto is my favorite for its more unique story and the complex way it tells it. Beautifully shot, memorable soundtracks... just really ace movies all around.
Neither is on DVD in the US, but Toto's UK release is regionless and works fine in US players (cheap, too), and I've seen both of them floating around torrent sites.
