I believe you are right, though what constitutes pass interference changes play-to-play, game-to-game, and year-to-year. In any case, that was pass interference by nearly any definition.

Many years ago, there was a penalty on pass plays for "face guarding." What you describe is face guarding. There is no penalty under current NFL rules for this act, unless there is physical contact. If the ball hits the defender, as you describe, the play would be legal. It is dangerous for a defender to turn his back on the direction that the ball is coming from. If he contacts the intended receiver, it would be pass interference because the defender is not playing the ball. You seldom see what you describe, but it would not be a foul.

week 17 giants/pats. they called a pass int on gerris wilkinson even though he didn't even touch the wr cuz he was face guarding.

It was obviously pass interference. My house yelled out "Face-guarding?!?" That a professional announcer and HOF QB don't know this stuff and a casual fan does drives me up the wall.

ya, that was ez pass int, blewn coverage by JAMES FUCKING BUTLER again. I just think they were referring to that play, cuz it happened alot in that game.
