Election Thread 2008 MAKE SURE YOU VOTE

Before we put this thing to bed, I'd just like to pause and remember some of the truly awesome moments from this campaign.

1. Terrorist fist bump.

2. Fox News actually calling Obama's wife his "baby mama" in a graphic.

3. Sarah Palin not being able to name a single magazine she reads.

4. Obama's a terrible arab lady.

5. "Today you're ALL Joe the Plumber!" *tepid applause*

6. Evil no candy for Obama supporters woman.

7. Sarah Palin chairdancing on SNL while Amy Poehler raps about eskimos.

8. Pro-America parts of America.

9. Hilary Clinton hanging around like a vulture waiting for Obama to get shot.

10. The world's first terrorist Marxist black arab president, set to destroy America's economy by charging people earning over $250 000 an extra $121 a year. We all know they can't afford that.

I've always suspected that Obama is far from the peacenik he ran as, and I fully expect him to aggressively continue the war on terror (much to the shock of some of his supporters). It's his economic proposals that worry me, but I'm hoping that those were just campaign rhetoric.

I watched his victory speech hoping to see him make good on his promises of post-partisanship, now that the election's over. He went so far as to talk about the noble birth of the Republican party and quote Lincoln; I'm impressed.

Name a single acceptance speech in which the winner didn't talk about achieving a new era of bi-partisanship. It's mandatory. Though, if Obama's associations (his real ones) are any indication, he'll follow the Clinton model and simply kowtow to them on issues while never truly getting them to like him.

That is true, but I think Obama took it a step further by specifically praising the Republican party, in detail, as a righteous and noble institution. I got the sense from that speech that Obama really wants to serve as an independent, and I'm willing to believe him until he proves me wrong.

He said he'd start pulling the troops out of Iraq immediately. I think he's going to take ownership of the war and only pull out troops when the conditions on the ground warrant it. He said that we were going to rely on diplomacy to resolve the war on terror; I think he's going to use diplomacy when he can (mostly as PR, which is all it's good for when dealing with terrorists) but show no hesitation in air-raiding villages if necessary to kill terrorists. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Obama's victory was a landmark for equality.

"Twenty-five years ago Martin Luther King had a dream of an America where men and women would be judged not on the colour of their skin but on the content of their character," Rudd told reporters. "Today what America has done is turn that dream into a reality."

But European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso called for the election to usher in a "new deal" between the United States and the rest of the world to tackle the global financial crisis and other troubles.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will quickly top the list of White House priorities but Obama's election would not lead to a quick US disengagement from Iraq, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said.

"We don't think there will be change in policy overnight. There won't be quick disengagement here. A great deal is at stake here," Zebari told AFP, adding that Baghdad was looking for a "successful partnership" with Obama.

Election parties were held in major capitals around the world bringing together expatriate Americans and people anxious over events in the United States.

Hundreds of villagers in Kogelo, Obama's Kenyan family home, erupted into song and dance. President Mwai Kibaki declared a national holiday on Thursday to mark Obama's victory.

Swinging branches and chairs in the air, men cheered and clapped while women shouted "Obama! Obama!" in the village where his grandmother lives and where his late Kenyan father was born.

Wild celebrations woke the sleepy village, people hugged each other as others ran aimlessly in the muddy streets after spending a chilly night glued to a giant screen watching results on US networks.

"Senator Obama is our new president. God has answered our prayer," said pastor Washington Obonyo.

"Because Obama has won, we will have a change in the whole world. And for that I will slaughter a cockrel to celebrate with my family," said Joseph Otieno, a jubilant Kogelo resident.

I've stated my reasons many times. If you read between the lines of his statements after the primaries he's dropped lots of hints, like when he talked about not being blind to the opportunities we have in Iraq, or how forcefully he started talking about conducting military operations in Pakistan as the campaign came to a close (a far cry from his tone in the primaries), or how he went from saying Iran was harmless to talking about using whatever means necessary, including military force, to keep Iran from getting nukes.

From what I can tell, Prop 8 still hasn't been decided but it's likely to pass. I saw people come to blows with signs in Montrose (of all places) over this.

As far as Obama goes, I'm looking at it the same way I looked at Arnold getting elected governor: OK, the people got the change they wanted. Now let's see what he ends up doing. Will he follow up on what he's saying and become the symbol everyone's already convinced he is, or will it end up being the same old stuff? I'm not ready to dance in the streets quite yet. I don't envy Obama; he's got a ton to do and will be under incredible scrutiny every second of the next four years.

Quite honestly, Bush has always been admirably civil towards Obama.

I don't know. People are rightfully reveling in the "historic" nature of this election, but I'm surprised that McCain even had a chance considering the general consensus about George Bush and the current state of affairs in this country. Imagine the outcry about racism had McCain actually pulled this off...

I think it just shows that smears can really do a lot in elections, still. McCain should never have had to reassure a rally that President Obama would not be someone to be scared off.

I am geniunely surprised by this election. I thought we would see politics are usual with McCain winning over Obama. I expected McCain to lose the popular vote but wins the electoral vote win. I discounted the surge in voter registrations and expected the republician political machine of 2000/2004 to be strongly in place and better than ever. I expected racism to be stronger and a bigger factor.

Fucking people voted for the first Ballot question yes. Meaning the damn Governor can spend money without having it go to Senate and Congressional vote. The way they worded it. It made it seem like it was more of a bond issue, but if you read it carefully and thought about it. Nope they want more financial freedom without the worry of the people.

At least they voted no on the second question ... Allowing Mayors and Freeholders to elect Municipal Judges without a vote. BTW it was funny it even stated in the question that it was against the NJ Constitution. lol.

The Patriot Act isn't a bad tool, per say. The problem is the wording that allows them to wiretap and spy on potentially innocent civilians and violate their right to privacy in your country. If they amend the act to be more specific, and force law enforcement to prove their suspicions about citizens on certain grounds then it would be fine.

It's just too extreme as it stands.

I always called for more than 2 choices.

You had more than two of 'em on the ballot, what's up? Everybody talks shit about third/fourth/fifth parties, but nobody's going to vote for 'em. Nobody does. Well, squall.

People really seem to like bianary decision making. Left/right, yes/no, red/blue. I think it's a bit built-in. Give a big weird animal like an electorate more than two choices, it freaks out. See: the California run-off a few years back.

Ugh looks like Issue 8 is going to pass in California, one step forward, another step back. When will they make Civil Union as legally powerful as marriage so people can stop caring and so that the government can take their money.

Also Arkansas banned Gay couples from adopting children, screw the children let's stick to morally ridiculous ideals!

Tide's changing. Those issues'll get another turn to get knocked down, hopefully soon.

Hopefully, I do hope that paper thin traditions will eventually crumple.

Not adopting children, those are much better off going to the trashy couples, get a little beatin every now and then too.

No kidding - I voted no on that and Prop 8 and those seem to be the only ones to pass? Fucking lame.

Oh wait - Prop 2 passed as well. Way to push more industries out of the state while giving the thumbs up to more spending, Californians.

Oregon passed a measure that undid a previous measure that required a majority turnout for ballot measures concerning taxes to pass. Good on us.

One that did NOT pass was one that would have allowed open primaries, with the top two winners advancing to the general election regardless of party. There was potential for Dem/Dem, Indy/Indy, Rep/Indy, etc. It would have been a mess, but an interesting mess.
