Well, I finally got my N64 last night. But when I was setting it up, I found out that the power adapter doesnt work. Now, I need to find us a new one, and it costs money. That got me thinking, why can Nintendo use the regular power cords like every other normal system do? Both N64 and Cube have this bulky adapter units that are connected into the console, wherether PSX,PS2,DC,Xbox,Saturn have simple power cords, that are much easier to change if case it break.
So what are your thoughts on that?
The reason is because the ac adapter is too large to fit inside the console, so they go with an external power system.

A power source can be quite large. Nintendo uses an external source to slim down their consoles.
...the cube doesn't because of it's size constraints (ie the cube would have to be larger)...as for the n64...think this...if you could by it radio shack or where-ever that is money the big n is losing out on...they want you to by one made by them, or one that somebody pays the n a royalty to make...it's the nature of the beast...this is most likely the reason why sony changed from the original standard fare AV inputs on the back to the "unique" multi-plug input...
Cords don't break. Adaptors do.
Other consoles' adaptors are placed inside the units, meaning that if the adaptor (not the cord) breaks, you need major repairs or a new unit. Nintendo's designs are vastly superior - a few weeks ago, my brother's Cube adaptor was fried, but the console was unharmed.
Also, conventional adaptors (like those of the 16-bit era and earlier, with the large transformer plugs) take up obscene amounts of space on power strips.
Sorry, Despair, but Nintendo has got you on this one. Besides, a replacement 64 adaptor should be like $5 these days. But it's good to see that you're finally giving the best console of the last generation a chance.
Yes, I'm going to stop by my GameStop at lunch, to see if they got any AC Adapters left. Or look for them on Ebay, they have them for like $9 there.
Well, Sin & Punishment is major reason I finally picked up N64. After reading all these comments on how great it is, I just had to try it. Plus I also never played Legancy of Darkness, so I will give these 2 games a chance.
Get Conker, you won't be sorry. Especially since it's so cheap nowadays.
I'd also recommend Jet Force Gemini, but not everyone will agree with me on that one.
Well the N64 one is nice because you plug the big end into the Ass of the N64, and with the NES and SNES its at the plus end. But the Gamecube its in the middle. Not only does it look weird but if its hanging in the air due to the GC being on a higher shelf it must put some sort of strain on the GC side of the plug. And maybe Nintendo continues to use the AC to keep the insides cooler, becuase sometimes those ACs get hot.
Damn, GameSpot still selling those for $20 :(
Going to check the Funco near my house, if they have any used adaptors. Otherwise, Ebay, here I come :)
the other reason they do this is
ok well bassicaly what those big parts are are transformers to get the proper voltage and such and such going to the system
now transformers build up ALOT of heat i mean ALOT ALOT
by putting the transformer outside the unit it keeps everything on the inside running much cooler
havifn the system run cooler on the inside it helps lengethn the systems life
im sure everyone here remembers the PSX's that would burnout (the first few generation ones)
Personally i think MS and Sony could take a leason from Nintendo here
theres just sooo many benefits to having it outside to the 1 benefit of having it inside
