Its still there, I swung by it on vacation in Austin. But then again my law school is a few blocks down from the Catholic cathedral here in Houston.

The story i read all the time is that it was a religion started on a bet between Aleister Crowley and Hubbard who could found the most profitable religion. Crowley founded the Eastern style lodges (OOO) while hubbard did the Scientology.
Hubbard is definitely winning. But its not secret how bad they are these days. They're basically corporate religion, armed with lawyers and using modern techniques to market themselves. It'd be like if a religion decided to market itself, defend itself legally (aggressively) and use modern psych techniques to recruit and keep followers.
I'd be worried if other churches followed their lead. Or not, honestly I think I approve of Scientology as a religious choice, NO one (until recently) was born into it, everyone joined out of free will and stayed with despite being exposed to as an adult no matter how absurd the material became. Anyone who joins that shit deserves it.
