The Xbox has nothing to do with Microsoft trying to promote Windows over Mac OS.

The hardware I'm sure, but has MS really lost money on the overall project? Including software and Live spanning both consoles?

Xbox everything lost them billions last generation. Their only profitable quarter was the quarter Halo 2 launched. This generation is probably better to them 'cause they aren't taking a massive hit on the hardware (I don't know that OG Xbox ever sold for a profit) and software sales (licensing) have been really good. I still expect they're in the red this gen, and definitely still a ways away from making money overall.

Regardless, wouldn't you say that their overall plan for the systems is to eventually become profitable?

Obviously they want them to be profitable--I'm sure they're not excited about bleeding dollars--but I don't know if their ultimate plan is to make money on video games or to establish the brand outside of PC and control the living room like they do the office. You could ask Bill Gates, but I doubt he'd tell you :)

Nintendo is soley a gaming company, they make there consoles and make it so that the best games on them are always made by them. They have been doing the whole gaming thing since the beginning and have learned how to make a living off of it.

No, like I said they know that the damn things won't sell enough, it's all to get your name out there. Word of mouth is the cheapest and best way to assert your self in a competive market.
