Sony's very underrated as a publisher/developer. Gran Turismo, WipEout, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, LocoRoco, Twisted Metal, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, Jet Moto, Ape Escape, Armored Cored, Tenchu, The Getaway, Omega Boost, Crash Bandicoot--all good to great games, though some franchises have gone very, very downhill. They also published a lot of stuff that wasn't theirs in the PlayStation days, including most of Square's library (included good stuff like Tobal, Einhander, Bushido Blade).

Not really. Sony owns or created the developers of almost all of their worthwhile properties, and while Sega has long standing relationships with developers like Treasure, their in-house developers are where the vast majority of their great titles have come.

MS has Rare, Ensemble, and had Bungie. That's pretty much it, as far as truly top-tier studios in their camp. Anvil, Lionhead, FASA, Turn10, Power & Magic, etc are/were all average at best, imo.

2. Nintendo - Metroid, Mario, F-Zero, Advance Wars
3. Konami - Metal Gear, Contra, Silent Hill
4. DICE - Battlefield 1942, 2, 2142
5. Treasure - Sin & Punishment, Radiant Silvergun, Gunstar

A close, close 6th:
6. Square (The Vagrant Story team) -FFT, Vagrant, FFXII (I replay these all the time. Timeless)

+Edit - I guess Treasure is not a publisher but so what :)

Agreed completely. Sony as a developer and to a lesser extent as a publisher is a very interesting company, pushing a lot of stuff that's almost aggressively indie, like Vib Ribbon, Little Big Planet, Echochrome, etc. They're decidedly uncommercial for a first party, and I give them a lot of credit for taking risks.

Treasure didn't publish any of those games (well... arcade release of RSG). DICE didn't either. Valve didn't publish TFC or CS before Steam came out, either.

You know that Treasure has never once in their history published a game?

Good call on Vib Ribbon. I also forgot Parappa, probably a lot of others.

I guess I got my devs and pubs mixed up. Oh well.

The thing about Sony is that they do such a wide variety of games. You mentioned the indie-style titles, but there are also games like Socom, God of War, and Uncharted that appeal to less hip but still hardcore gamers. There's even stuff like Singstar for more casual people.

No I named some games that were out on the DC that kicked the PS2's ass, and if it had not been discontinued, there wouldn't be as many great games that came out on the PS2 and the trend of great games on DC would have continued.
