Chapter 1 was awesome.
This looks better than I thought from the GT review I saw but I have a strong feeling I will be able to get this brand new for $40 or less before Christmas.
The game is definitely fun, but I seem to agree with all of the reviews I have read saying that all of the great ideas in the game have just as many poorly implemented ones.
I'm on chapter 5 I believe, and combat is very poorly implemented. Disarms, even when in slow mo, tend to work only like 70% of the time. The level design is very very inconsistent. There are some truly brilliant platforming parts on rooftops with multiple routes that emphasize this games speed and flow. Yet at the same time there are some god awful indoor environments that take everything that is good about the game (combat, speed, and improvisation) and turn it into a "ok, let me look around to try and find the next platform I should jump onto".
What I do love about the game is that it plays like nothing you have ever played before. And for every annoying part of the game I have found, it throws me a curve ball and really really impresses me. The subway chase to be exact, god damn was that awesome. This is definitely a game everyone should check out soon or later. But as far as I'm concerned, and seeing that I was anticipating this game just as much as many other of the awesome games coming out, there's no need to rush into buying this one.
MEH. I still stand by my impressions posted above. Just finished the game, and for every awesome part of the game, there's some horribly tedious or just flat out not fun part of the game that completely cancels out the awesome that had just happened. They needed more rooftop runner chases and rooftop sniper fire dodging acrobatics and less indoors pseudo platforming boringness.
This is definitely getting traded in for Left 4 Dead.
I encourage everyone to at least rent this game. Like Brand X says, it plays like nothing else you've ever played before. But the real longevity of the game comes from the time trials. Consider the story mode an extended time trial tutorial (although the story stands on its own merits). The tedious parts become a lot more exciting when you're trying to beat your own best times, and move up on the leaderboard. Once you know what you're doing, you're no longer standing around looking for things to grab; you're concentrating on looking like a badass.
I have to agree with Sleeve. I'm hooked. Brand's criticisms are fair, but the indoor sections and areas of trial and error repetition didn't bother me at all. Perhaps a bit analogous to Gunvalkyrie in that you may muddle through some parts (a lot of parts, possibly), but once you understand Faith's real range and the level layout, you can get an amazing groove going. That said, the free flowing rooftop bits are usually the best levels. Haven't even touched time trials yet, so notions of limited game length are once again unfounded...for me anyway. Bravo to DICE for making something fresh.
I think this game is good but not great thanks to all the inconsistencies. Runner's vision should be more prevalent, since it simply is not fun to stop and try to figure out exactly where to go next. The hint button is often useless since Faith will just look at the ceiling or turn around and look at where you just were. The controls also seem to be a little inconsistent. I've had perfect time trial runs screwed up because Faith decided not to wallrun. The level design needed more rooftop shenanigans and less running through confined office areas. I was also pretty pissed off with the section where you first have to break glass to proceed. Before that section, all the glass you came across was unbreakable. I don't like it when games change the rules like that. Oh, and the game is definitely short. I played it for a few hours yesterday and I'm halfway through it.
Still, Mirror's Edge is definitely worth a rental. It doesn't perfectly implement all of the concepts it contains, but it does play like nothing else I have ever seen.
In the 1up review, they mentioned something to the effect that this almost feels like it's just setting up for or begging to have a sequel. Anyone agree with that?
Am I the only one stumped by the TV ad? The camera is behind the chick as she looks at her reflection in the glass. The bullet hits in the middle of her face reflection, from behind.......but doesn't hit her.
I always thought the bullet was coming from the side, and just happened to hit right between the eyes of her reflection.
