I bet I beat all of AaronChance's times with a joypad.
I enjoy every second of it.
I can understand people insisting mouselook is superior, but it confounds me that anyone considers WASD and a jumbled mess of hotkeys a preferable control input to an analog stick and buttons that are far more naturally accessible to the hand.
Weapon hotkeys on a keyboard may not be as natural but you can have many more of them and you don't need to stop aiming to press them. And once you get good with them, it's faster.
And WASD obviously doesn't allow for the movement variation of an analog stick but this isn't much of a hindrance in most FPS games. In fact, many high-end movements just aren't possible on a stick (or are much more difficult at best) due to the extra time it takes you to go from 100% in one direction to 100% in the opposite. Quake 3 bunny hopping, for example. Many people prefer the 8-way Virtual On twinsticks over a regular pad for a similar reason.
Who stops moving to hit a hot key? Even MMO players are more dexterous than that.
But you do need to do it in just about every other FPS.
And another good thing about WASD: Pressing W always gives you 100% forward. It's very easy to list slightly to the side with a 360/PS3 pad but this isn't much of an issue until you're in a hyper-precision game like Mirror's Edge, where any deviation actually slows your momentum slightly and can ruin some of the tougher jumps.Yoshi's right. Good keyboard mapping means that you never have to let go of the W (or the E, as I use in most high-speed FPS).
edit: Man, I could talk about this ALL DAY.
It should be pointed out that nearly everyone who actually plays games on both PC and consoles prefers the PC controls.
For First Person Whatevers, absolutely. I find the M&KB setup for SF4 to be clunky, however.
Clearly... though so are the stock 360 and PS3 pads. I wouldn't ever play SFIV with any of the three.
I learned how to use a Dual Shock successfully yeaaaars ago for fighting games, and can hold my own in CvS2 with The Duke, so I don't particularly agree. If you're good at a game, you're good at a game.
Similar to how the best iPod will not somehow unlock good taste in music.
Yeah, the Dual Shock isn't great in terms of feel, but it's perfectly accurate so if you can get used to it, it works fine.
I can actually play SF fine with a keyboard too except for Zangief and Zangief-like characters.
That's what the mouse is for. Scroll-wheel SPDs all day all night!
I set my fierces to the shoulders for leverage. I find I use 'em sparingly for the most part. I need my jabs and my mediums, though.
Saturn pad is still the king of kings, though.
I still can't choose a clear winner between the Saturn pad and the Neo Geo pad, especially the PS2 version of the latter with the six face buttons. It depends on the specific game which one I like more.
I prefer a KB/M for serious FPS gameplay but I do not mind the joypad because I've played so much with it I'm pretty good.
When I started out though, it was a train-wreck. Original Halo was really the first FPS I bothered with on a console. Very difficult.
But the biggest problem is really turning quickly, on a console, and twitch-fine-aiming, obviously. Mirror's Edge doesn't have too many points where you need to 180 super rapidly, and you can tweak the sensitivity on the pad enough to handle everything I've seen so far. And that's what we're talking about here, Mirror's Edge.
kidnemo sent me the news that this has dropped to $17.99 used at shitty GS, so I swung by and picked it up for the 360. Achievements here I come! I never bothered with the hidden packages or most of the time trials on the PC (no achievements + super cheaters leaderboard), so I'm pretty excited for that.
Also, since we are talking about Mirror's Edge, there is specifically a button that turns you 180 degrees.
Shit, Mzo's Right. I knew that. But I don't think I ever used it.
Maybe if there were something else worth playing that everyone isn't already playing on 360, it wouldn't.
:wtf:
Aside from GoW2, what are people playing on 360 that isn't better on PC?
Who cares? Why is anyone still playing TF2?
The people who are still playing TF2 now are the same PC gamers who were still playing TF1 before 2 came out. Who gives a shit.
It's pretty predictable that a series that became popular on the PC would have a fanbase based on PC.
Turns out anybody I'd want to be playing an online game with plays on 360. So there's that. Wakka wakka.
Anyone like myself who likes to hop on and play an older game for a couple hours every now and then when he's in the mood and still wants to enjoy himself.
I'm not the kind of guy who is going to play a game religiously for 2 months and throw it out. I'm going to be more casual than that at the start but revisit it for longer, since I tend to juggle a lot of games.
You can still find a handful of people playing almost anything that still has support.
I'd rather play the original DoD than TF2, and on the PC I probably could find a game. I can also still find people playing Crimson Skies, but the point is valid I guess. Console gamers tend to be more fickle.
Believe it or not people are still playing TF2 on 360, and yes it is hard to believe. On an unreleated note KBM has never ever felt right to me. I'll fully acknowledge that it may be more accurate but the 360 controler is more comfortable and works great so whatever.
kb+tb, only way to go
That is an Important Truth.
Team Fortress 2 is the best multiplayer FPS ever made. I play it nearly every day and have never gotten bored.
I'm pretty sure I'd still find 6 people playing that amazing thief mod for Unreal tournament. God that thing was impressive.
The guys I know who played TFC don't like TF2, and most of the people I know playing TF2 didn't play TFC.Quote:

So I can't get the enhanced physics effects without hardware? Gay.
You can run Physx in software mode but it'll probably be a decent framerate hit.
Grabbed this used for the 360 for $17 today at GS.
could have saved $4 from extra 30% off last week :p
I have lots of CPU juice and physx hardware actually blows so this isn't a concern. But when I set the game itself to hardware mode it seems to just lock up.
EDIT: I see, I have to switch it to software on the driver side, too. Damn, that does look nice, but the performance does take a serious hit at certain spots.
Playing this on the 360, I miss the weird tearing plastic from the PC version. That shit was kind of awesome =[
Yeah. But I'm not sure I buy the shot in the dark guess that tons of TFC players are crazy about TF2, is all.Quote:
Anecdotal
I finished story mode on normal. What a great game.
I didn't have any problems with any particular area or find the combat that bad or annoying. You just had to be crafty and pick your fights, no big deal.
Both this and Breakdown are awesome.
I had a game crashing bug that seems to have been fixed by the patch. Too bad I had to jump through 5 hoops just to get the patch.
So I finally got the DLC for the PC version (thanks to a super-sale on a retail copy). Worth every penny.
PC people add me as a friend for the leaderboards!
Scudnick
I added epmode because I guessed that would be his user name.
Did anyone but Prince Planet even try to do the Time Trial maps?
I submit that they did not =[
I intend to as soon as I pick up the game. D:
I'm just aiming to get three stars on every stage, but that has still been enough to beat everyone else's times handily (except the aforementioned PP).
I cannot promise that I will go back to an old race to bring you some heaping come-uppance once you start playing this, but maybe!
I am very excited about it after playing the demo! /so late to the potty
I did in the INFINITELY SUPERIOR PC version YOU ACHIEVEMENT WHORING JACKASS! My favorite part of the game, too, even though I only 3-starred a few of them.
Due to the login trouble I mentioned earlier, I restarted under a new savegame (user "epmodemirror" for anyone with the PC version). And again, Mirror's Edge is criminally underrated. It's so, so good. Reviewers are dumb idots and they're dumb and I hate them.
Wah wah PC version realest flapping cloth ever golly gee.
Well, in that superior game I gave up on doing it because a) there was no achievement for it, when there easily could have been and b) all the best times were obvious, flagrant, bastardly cheating. Every time trial ghost jumped like the Hulk with a dildo in his ass and were worthless to me.
Yes, we need more PC players.
I've only got 3 stars on a handful of maps, though I have plenty of 2s.
I did beat Kumubou's nutso time on that one office building level that has that ridiculous support beam walljump to get to the top level, though, which made me feel like a pretty princess.
Stupid game still wont log onto the EA servers.
I have been playing on PC a bit (try to guess my name) but I haven't had the time or interest to try to build some good times up again.
Stumbled into this looking for completely unrelated stuff. This game is so good.
The newest threat to children: RUNNING
The train stuff at around 30:00 is when I really fell in love. I remember the moment clearly.
This is a nice reminder that I need to replay this game. I'd probably have this in my Top 10 of the Generation
The segment that starts at 38:00 took me forever to get through! I just could not make that wallrun/horizontal bar jump to the scaffolding to save my life. I'd either get shot to death on the bar trying to line up my jump or miss the jump to the center. Great game though, wish it did better sales wise.
