Is there any chance for these companies to get on top agian, or even become competive?

Plastics.
In GM's case, I only see three options. One is to take a huge capital hit and re-engineer their entire assembly process. The second is for some kind of government subsidy or tariff to level the playing field with Toyota and Honda. The last one is to throw the worthless union assholes out and get some labor that would actually be paid according to skill level like the rest of the world.
Delta could be saved by the last option as well.
Yoshi-GM
1. Do-able
2. Tariffs can't be done to the car companies that have factories already set in place here.
3.Do-able
EDIT:
Delta:
Airbus is already years above them in the manufactoring and performance process, and they have stiffer unions in europe than in the US. Delta uses Boeing planes which are not as cost more than airbuses and are not as cost effective.
Delta = airline
Airbus = plane maker
Tariffs can be done on whatever the fuck the government passes, but that's a terrible option anyway.
The government passed NAFTA so companies like GM didn't have to worry about outsourcing to Mexico.
WHen I think financial advise for some of the biggest companies in the world, I think TNL.
