I will always love the 32X. During a period when Doom was all the craze, I couldn't afford a PC to play it. However, I did have $250 saved up, and the 32X delivered during that holiday season. Sure, it wasn't the PC's Doom, but whatever. It was still Doom, it ran fairly smoothly, it was on my TV, and it was less than $300. A friend and I played through the whole game on Nightmare in one sitting. It was great times. Thank you, 32X.
Gamefan led me to spend $50 on Welcome House. Eat a dick, Halverson.
Of course, it did turn me on to Gunners Heaven and Tail of the Sun, just to name a few, so I take the good with the bad, generally. Gamefan wasn't the mag that generated my lust for first-gen 32 bit games, though, and I've been looking through old boxes for years to figure out what that one magazine that created that was. Maybe EGM. Did a big feature on a lot of stuff including that Parodius pack for PS and Saturn, among others.
I guess it wouldn't be right if I didn't mention Breakdown. TNL talked the game up so much, I ventured out to Target to get it for $20. Glad I didn't pay any more than that. And since I've mentioned Breakdown, I need to mention that Dino Crisis 2 is the best game ever. Now this post is the same as all my other posts!

Let's see... Ocarina of Time. I'm the opposite of Nash here. I loved Link to the Past and Link's Awakening so much, and 3D Zelda seemed like a good idea. Except it was an ugly, boring, clunky piece of shit. Every 3D Zelda following was an improvement. Even today, they're still not that good.
Next biggest disappointment would be Super Mario Sunshine. What a drag.
It takes a lot to let me down, too. I paid full price for The Bouncer, Devil May Cry 2, Gunvalkyrie, Gungrave and countless other games that people told me they hated and I should avoid at all costs, and with the exception of DMC2 I loved all of them. Also an old roommate talked me into buying God Hand on a whim and I absolutely loved it and proceeded to convert the masses and make tons of fun for everyone. That was a good call, but people seem pretty divided on that one still.
It was just boring and not an upgrade from BF2. Quake Wars is what I wanted 2142 to be.
32X totally burned me. Didn't know about the Saturn and was dumb enough not to expect it. I bought 32X at launch pretty much (that month, anyway) and I only ended up getting like 4 or 5 games for it before it fizzled out and I traded it and my Genesis in for a Nomad that served me far better.
I was also really excited for Skies of Arcadia and ended up despising it.

I had become old enough to mow lawns for money, and KB Toys had Master System 2's for 30 bucks, and the games for 10 bucks. (This was after it had died, obviously. 1993 I think.) On top of that, a used game store had stacks of SMS games used for 7 bucks apeice, and had pretty much everything. Nobody had the system, so no one rented or bought them.
I saved my pennies and bought the system. The lady asked if I wanted one of the games, and I said I would be fine since it had ALEX KIDD! included. The problem is that I ended up hating it. A couple of weeks later I have more cash saved and I go back to the store, and they no longer have any games. No biggie, I'll head to the used store, they had plenty.
I buy Double Dragon, Shinobi, and Rampage. Rampage wasn't as much fun as it was in the arcade and DD was decent. Shinobi ended up being the killer app, the only thing that made the system worth the money. I was disappointed that it wasn't the arcade game, but it was still great.
I went back to the store the next week, wanting Outrun, Afterburner, and the usual Sega arcade fare, and they were gone. Somehow the stack that had been sitting there for years, that the owner said nobody looked at but me, was gone. I didn't have any opportunity to buy any more Master System games until I was an adult, with the internet and a credit card.
