Gamefan Magazine really knew how to hype up games to a point where you thought they were fucking gold bricks, but in reality they were really shit bricks. I can remember really being excited over games that they reviewed only to be very disappointed. I think the system that they hyped up the biggest for me was the 32x. Do you have any games that you can remember that you thought were going to be gold, but ended up being crap?

That said, Guilty Gear XX ^ Core. I'd heard nothing but hype about the series for years (since the PS1 game), finally got down to it, annnnnnd I hate it. Wanted so much for it to be good.
That's about it.
I don't often wind up being disappointed by a game that I own.. Except for Hoshigami. Considering how much I loved Final Fantasy Tactics, this would be a sure thing, right? I still haven't forgiven my friend for buying it for my birthday.

x-band modem for the snes. Good concept, but too early in the age of dialup to work, with very limited game support.
Disgaea 2. I guess I didn't realize that I obsessively got into the first one because it succeeded a nasty breakup followed by a semester break with nothing to do.
Gotta say, I never saw Mario 64 move until well after the fact, so I completely missed the N64 thing completely.
Thank God. Spent a weekend with a launch day Playstation rented out with Raiden and Jumping Flash and never looked back.
Splinter Cell: Double Agent. I only played the SC games online and was really looking forward to this one. Boy did Ubisoft screw the pooch on this one. I don't think it was even worth the 2 weeks of online play that I put into it. A major disappointment if you factor in the fact that I played Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory for about 2-3 years online.
Deep Blue (Turbografx)- Thought it looked good, ignored critics. Whoops.
Airs Adventure (Saturn)- Really ugly 3D Japanese RPG, not sure why I wasted money on it.

I had a ton of fun with my Genesis Xband. There were always a lot of players and I never had a tough time finding someone to play. The game support was kinda limited but it had several of my favorite games at the time (Madden, NHL, NBA Jam, MK2 & SSF2T). I was really bummed when the service went down in '97.Quote:

The biggest culprit, however, has to be Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Ocarina of Time is my favorite game ever, so I was hyped as fuck about a next-gen (at the time) Zelda title. I didn't like the cell shaded graphics, but I was willing to overlook that because, fuck, a bigger and better game than Ocarina of Time was about to come out. Coincidentally, the runner-up in this topic is Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. With a more realistic art style and hyped as the biggest Zelda title ever, I was hopeful (but not hyped) that this would make up for Nintendo's previous attempt. Sadly, I found it to be a worse game than Wind Waker. The Disney-esque feel, wolf fetch quests, gratuitous dialog and story, and limited number of dungeons (although I admit they were some of the biggest dungeons in the series), and overall padding that went into the game's length just turned me off. I'd say it's the worst title in the series.
Blue Blink (PCE)
They sold this game as Super Mario 3 for the PCE/Turbo. Not even a tenth as good as any SMB game.
Fable. I bought into the hype and expected the "best RPG ever". I read all the previews and thought it was going to be absolutely amazing.
As everyone knows, Fable turned out to be a decent action-adventure with an interesting sandbox aspect and some boneheaded flaws. It also didn't let you explore freely. The (bloom-abusing) graphics were nice at times and N64-quality at other occasions.
Fable isn't a bad game. But it didn't deliver what it promised, and that killed my enjoyment of the game.
Everything on the Jaguar.
Cybermorph = The most repetitive game I've ever played.
Aliens Vs. Predator = Choppy frame rate and lack-luster level design.
Troy Aikman Football = WTF? Even Mike Ditka's football game on the SNES was better.
Supercross 3-D = 5 frames per second of MX yawn.
Checkered Flag = Does the Jag have a problem with frame-rates? This game made Virtua Racing look like the king of racing games.
The Jag was good for Wolfenstein 3-D, Tempest 2000, Doom, Theme Park and a couple of other games at best.
I'm going to stick with a very recent game on this one: Perfect Dark Zero. I bought an Xbox 360 on launch day, almost entirely because of this game. Its too bad that it honestly ranks among some of the shittiest first person shooters I've played. This should have been a huge title for the 360's library and I wouldn't doubt if half of us 360 owners always forget that it was even made.

Me, and my friend got caught up in the Rockerstar hype after GTAIII, and had the poor fortune of buying this game for full price when it came out. They even forced us to show our damn ID's for this garbage.

I don't know looking back the N64 was a bit of a disappointment. M64, OOT, SF64, and a couple others were really kick ass games back then. There was so little else though, my biggest complaint was the complete and total lack of fighting games other than KI and 1 or 2 others.

Battlefield 2142
Don't hate me changeling...
32X. I was so fucking hyped at the prospect of turning my beloved Genesis into a 32-bit system, I read every GameFan 32X hypefest over and over again, and then Christmas 94 came and I was left with coupons for future titles and a rented copy of Afterburner. 6 months later the Saturn was on shelves and I was left stewing (although I did have the superior version of Virtua Fighter on 32X).

I will always love the 32X. During a period when Doom was all the craze, I couldn't afford a PC to play it. However, I did have $250 saved up, and the 32X delivered during that holiday season. Sure, it wasn't the PC's Doom, but whatever. It was still Doom, it ran fairly smoothly, it was on my TV, and it was less than $300. A friend and I played through the whole game on Nightmare in one sitting. It was great times. Thank you, 32X.
Gamefan led me to spend $50 on Welcome House. Eat a dick, Halverson.
Of course, it did turn me on to Gunners Heaven and Tail of the Sun, just to name a few, so I take the good with the bad, generally. Gamefan wasn't the mag that generated my lust for first-gen 32 bit games, though, and I've been looking through old boxes for years to figure out what that one magazine that created that was. Maybe EGM. Did a big feature on a lot of stuff including that Parodius pack for PS and Saturn, among others.
I guess it wouldn't be right if I didn't mention Breakdown. TNL talked the game up so much, I ventured out to Target to get it for $20. Glad I didn't pay any more than that. And since I've mentioned Breakdown, I need to mention that Dino Crisis 2 is the best game ever. Now this post is the same as all my other posts!

Let's see... Ocarina of Time. I'm the opposite of Nash here. I loved Link to the Past and Link's Awakening so much, and 3D Zelda seemed like a good idea. Except it was an ugly, boring, clunky piece of shit. Every 3D Zelda following was an improvement. Even today, they're still not that good.
Next biggest disappointment would be Super Mario Sunshine. What a drag.
It takes a lot to let me down, too. I paid full price for The Bouncer, Devil May Cry 2, Gunvalkyrie, Gungrave and countless other games that people told me they hated and I should avoid at all costs, and with the exception of DMC2 I loved all of them. Also an old roommate talked me into buying God Hand on a whim and I absolutely loved it and proceeded to convert the masses and make tons of fun for everyone. That was a good call, but people seem pretty divided on that one still.
It was just boring and not an upgrade from BF2. Quake Wars is what I wanted 2142 to be.
32X totally burned me. Didn't know about the Saturn and was dumb enough not to expect it. I bought 32X at launch pretty much (that month, anyway) and I only ended up getting like 4 or 5 games for it before it fizzled out and I traded it and my Genesis in for a Nomad that served me far better.
I was also really excited for Skies of Arcadia and ended up despising it.

I had become old enough to mow lawns for money, and KB Toys had Master System 2's for 30 bucks, and the games for 10 bucks. (This was after it had died, obviously. 1993 I think.) I went back to the store the next week, wanting Outrun, Afterburner, and the usual Sega arcade fare, and they were gone. Somehow the stack that had been sitting there for years, that the owner said nobody looked at but me, was gone. I didn't have any opportunity to buy any more Master System games until I was an adult, with the internet and a credit card.

But the game was a buggy mess, World of Warcraft ended up forcing Sony to release this far too early in which caused lots of distress. Also stuff like linked mobs, even more linked than in World of Warcraft, took out a lot of the awesome pulling techniques you could do in the game.
You love a shit game, then. Sorry, it's bad. "Godzilla: Monster of Monsters" does the stomping better, and the tiny low-gravity jumpy sequences are bulllllll-shit.Quote:

Screw you KOF! Enduro Racer was one of my favorite SMS games. The friends could talk all the shit they wanted about how great the NES was, and all I'd have to do is pop in Enduro Racer and ask if their Excitebike could go THIS FAST and have THIS MANY different looking tracks.
Truth be told it was a few years after I had the game that I actually saw the arcade version, and yeah, it's a totally different game, but the SMS version was rad man. RAD!
there was also a local(?) chain called Childrens Palace that i absolutely LOVED to go to. unfortunately TRU moved in and put them out. i remember them having the best TurboGrafx section around.
I loved the idea of an attachable upgrade for the Genny and the Neptune looked awesome. In retrospect, it was the worst of all worlds. They should have either continued with SVP chips in the Genny carts, or made the 32X a cartridge version of the Saturn with simultaneous releases. (Too bad SNK never went the cartridge upgrade route. I'd love to see a new Neo-Geo cart with $100 worth of upgrade chips and RAM in the cart....)Quote:

I think the biggest problem with the Jag was, right before launch, Atari stripped away most of its RAM to save money. (I remember Quartermann announcing that and comparing it to castrating a bull.) That makes the games look far worse than they should. And a lot of the better looking games have no music, using the RAM for the graphics.

while i never owned one (for obvious reasons) i would have to say the CD-i was the biggest letdown ever. so many rumors of an SNES cd add-on, then Nintendo goes with Phillips and turns away from SONY. anybody that walked into a SEARS or saw the infomertials could tell you it was a trainwreck from the start.
i will however always have a soft spot for both the Jaguar and 3DO.
I've owned a CDi on many occasions. While I would never classify it as a must own console, like all "shitty" consoles, there are good games and good times to be had. You just have to look for them.
In hindsight I have a big soft spot for the disasters of the mid-90's (32X, Jaguar, Lynx, etc.)

Yeah, I remember thinking Body Harvest felt like a really awesome Jag game.
Senko no Ronde. I was hyped for this game. I loved VOOT, I loved G Rev, and this bad boy was actually coming out to the States. The demand was there, so much to the point that I bought this lemon for $59.99 the first week it was released. I was so traumatized by this purchase that it became the tipping point to stop making full-priced whim purchases and to institute a 5-day waiting period before buying a new game at full price, with very few exceptions. The only games I get upon release are ones that I identify at the start of each quarter and then pre-order online.
Raiden Trad on the SNES, saw it at a flea market, LOVED Raiden in the arcade so it was a sure bet right? To this date the only video game I EVER returned.

After playing Rockband I found out what I was missing, GH is full of EMO and stupid Metal, and Rockband is full of amazing deverse styles of relaxing music that is perfect to play with other people. Also GH hard mode is rediculously hard to the point its not fun anymore, it's just stupid.

OK, the idea of GH is to escape into a guitar playing world, to me GH hard is trying to much like being a real guitar to the point that I would rather pick up a real guitar and play that. I like to chillout when I play GH or Rockband and not be concentrating so hard on not screwing up that it makes it less of a game and more of a chore.Quote:

I can't remember thinking a lot of N64 games looked "great." The only one I'd still say that I think even looks acceptable is SM64. BC was always kind of a mess, but it was a ton of fun, so I was willing to look past it. I would kill for a modern sequel. J-Bomb is the best.

no no that would have been practical and obvious. I never got the n64 as a popular platform, it always seemed to be this indestructable kiddie platform with a few amazing games. I guess I called that one right.
