Let's start this up again. Feel free to discuss any and all drinks.

In addition, to keep discussion going we'll continue the (semi) biweekly drink picks. I'll start a list and keep it updated. Anyone who would like to suggest a drink to be an official pub pick just make a mention of it and I'll add you to the list.

The 2007 thread.

For whatever reason I can no longer edit the first post of the 2007 thread. So Dyne gets to unofficially start us off in 2008 with a pick from 2007.

Tomorrow I'll be going out drinking with my sister as I'm 21, throw me a suggestion and I'll drink it. (To the first few)

Non-rail vodka on ice. No shots. Shots are for chest thumpers or rock and roll bands.

Grey Goose is an excellent vodka to drink on the rocks.

A) I just gave out the great Washington Apple back in December; and

B) I'm supposed to give up booze for Lent.

Forget me on selections. I thought I'd be able to recommend a ton of awesome beers I've had but since so many of them are regional it's not worth it. I know a lot about wine, but it's too hard to recommend stuff that can be very expensive, and drinks are...well shit, drinks. I'm not going to go recommend hard liquor, you all should have tried it all already.

Don't be a party pooper. Some of us travel and can try the local flavor when we do.

If you are in the southern United States: Mint Julep. Seriously. Preferably on a porch.

Tried absenthe a couple weeks ago. Licorice-y. I enjoyed the ice cube being lit on fire and burning green.

So, yeah, turn out's pretty much non existent for the biweekly sign up. It's easy, folks! Look at bbobb's suggestion for Grey Goose. That's as complicated as you need to be. It's really just an excuse to bump the thread every other week and keep conversation going.

I have a stupid question but any advice would be welcome. My Mom asked for a "nice" Marsala wine for her birthday. She's going to be using it for cooking, and wants a bottle that she can use for more than one meal. This kind of struck me as foolish, as (1) a cooking wine doesn't have to be "nice" as a general rule, and (2) if she's planning on storing it for multiple uses that would likely ruin the wine anyway. Thoughts?

Marsala wine keeps for a really long time (up to a couple of years), just keep it in a cool place without alot of light, like a pantry or even your fridge. As far as what kind to get, it's really up to preference. They have sweet and dry. Since your cooking with it, I wouldn't really worry about going all out and spending a bunch of money. $5-$10 should get you a bottle that would work fine. Hope that helps :)

We tested about 8 different Marsala wines when I started managing here back in March. You're right MM, cost is not a factor in how well it cooks. The best one we've found is Cribari. It is among the cheapest bulk marsla out there. A 1.5 liter bottle might run you $8? Also, if anyone says Florio, its because they were sold on it by a distributor. Not because it is good.

Try a "liquid cocaine" shooter. It has Bacardi 151, Goldschlager, and jagermeister. One of those will do the trick rather quickly.

It's 1998 all over again.

Harp Lager

It's an Irish import but you can probably find it at any store with a decent import selection. So far my favorite Lager by far.

Harp is fucking garbage, go for Newcastle or Bodingtons.

I support Boddingtons

Both of which are decent, but I don't think either one is a lager.

What about Sam Smith for an imported or Brooklyn for a domestic? Those two are a step up from Harp IMO.

Backing this up. I don't mind Harp but Brooklyn Lager is pretty damn good. Not to mention the rest of their beers. Brooklyn Brown Ale is one of my favorites.

Ales are where it's at, if you can't stomach Stouts. (<3 stouts) If you live up near Boston get the Wachusett Nut Brown ale. That shit is delicious.

Cow is a man, Ales and Stouts, and throw in Porters as well.

Lagers suck, might as well switch to coors lite and save yourself 2 dollars a draft.

I prefer Porter's and Stouts as they are actually "Beer" and not "water with some alcohol in it"

With the exception of Sam Adams, which is an excellent summer beer of course.

There are plenty of flavorful lagers out there. None of them happen to be Budweiser, Coors or Miller. Just as it's not fair to say hamburgers suck because McDonalds doesn't serve real food, it's not fair to trash a massive category of beers because the mass-produced varieties are on the bland side. Lager does not mean yellow, fizzy and tasteless. There are plenty of very different styles under the category.

Again, if you like lagers, go for it. I think they really suck, plus they are of suck ass potency. 4 Bodington's equals about 10 harps.

You have no idea what you're talking about. There are plenty of lagers that have high alcohol content. Oktoberfest beers and bocks are lagers.

Yes, Biff, I'm that guy who takes time to learn about things he enjoys before running his mouth about them. You got me. No, I keep the beer geeking in the comfort of my own home and on the internet. I've been wanting to brew at home for the longest time but I still don't have the space for it. :(

Bars are for having a good time and if I ever became that guy who takes notes on beer at the bar I would request that one of my close friends put me down immediately.

And yeah, Dyne, I've had it in a previous year. Didn't mind it, but I certainly wouldn't pick up a case or anything. It's decent but I'd have trouble even recommending it over Hoegaarden, let alone anything better in the style.

Whenever I go to the Winking Lizard, there is always "that guy" who orders something he can't pronounce and then reads the bottle for 5 minutes. I like to insult them.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with trying all a bar has to offer. Ordering something interesting that "has the potential to suck" has been rewarding just as many times as it's been disappointing, if not more because now I know what's attached to the name.

It's the bottle-reading part that I don't get. What's up with that?

I'll read the bottle if it's there, otherwise I'll forget the name. (I'm a very forgetful person so meh)

also to generally see the alcohol content (Though it seems most beers don't actually display it on the bottle).

I plan to drink quite a bit of beer, and try a huge variation of them, Lager, Ales, Stouts, whatever. Though I do not think I'm a fan of Great Lakes Brewing Co.'s Burning River, which Is I guess considered a Pale Ale? So I've been meaning to try another type of Pale Ale.

Never had Burning River, but if you haven't already, give Sierra Nevada Pale Ale a shot. It's easy to find and it's a pretty damn solid beer. Nothing mindblowing, but it's great to fall back on when you want something good but you're not feeling too terribly adventurous.

Let's stop turning this thread into shit, and talk about beer.

I had some Red Hook ESB the other day. It was decent but nothing special. Just a standard, flavorful bitter. 5.8% alcohol by volume. Very drinkable.

It went nicely with the coors light in the beer pong cups.

Red Hook is owned partly by Budweiser, so it has national distribution. I haven't tried their other brews yet.

I really need a drinking buddy though. Tain needs to turn 21.

I don't mean like getting completely smashed, but going to a bar etc is boring by yourself.

Bars suck in general. I was done with them by age 22.

Unless there's a deal on booze or some fun event/sports event going on (or some beirut tables/pool tables, etc...) there's no reason to go there. Instead, invite 5 friends over your house, crank up your stereo with your own ipod full of songs you actually like, and play games while drinking.

I wish I could find a bar that was big into hockey around here...the only place that attracts Devils fans is Hooters, and their Yuengling is way overpriced. Watching sports in bars is almost as fun as being at the game.

I was at a seriously Irish pub in Red Bank a few weeks ago that was a good time: I was killing time for my g/f to get off work, and wound up next to a guy from Wales. His rugby team was playing a big match against Scotland that we watched together, while some skanky ass thirty year old girls made everyone around us uncomfortable and sprayed everyone with silly string while basically stripping.

It was good times, and I wound up with the name of a newspaper editor, so I'm trying to get some entry-level job. So, bars can be good for meeting people that aren't girls, sometimes.

That's cool. And if I come visit you I'll get a lot of shit from Great Lakes Brewing Co for yah to try. I figure one should try to bring their local flavor with you.

Bars seem like great fun, but I want them in walking distance, and they're only fun if you go with people. I have a damn good time going out with MechDeus to his local bar.

lately i am in love with drambuie. not straight, because it's really sweet, but mixing it a little. a half shot in a rocks of johnnie black, a splash in blue moon, with jack and a bit of dry vermouth...it makes everything better.

I have a huge bottle of Bombay Sapphire about 90% full, but I don't really drink gin other than gin and tonic (and I never have tonic handy). I don't even remember why i bought it. I blame the Costco madness. Anyway, today i resolved to start drinking it.

I consulted the real TNL pub 07 and picked up the lime juice to make a gimlet. It was decent, but I had to puss out and add seltzer water. That made it a lot better, but it still seems like it needs something. Maybe I just don't like it that much.

Anyone have any other gin drinks I should try? This is a supersize bottle. I have to find something I enjoy drinking.

Last week was mojito week. I bought some Stirring's mojito mix and a bottle of 10 Cain rum. Really good mojitos. I make them from scratch sometimes too, but they only turn out excellent about half the time. With the mix I am guarenteed a good (if not great) mojito any time. Kind of a fruity drink, but it's so satisfying on a hot day so piss off.

Tom Collins is another common Gin drink.

Personally I prefer just Gin and Tonic though.

Oh, and White Lady's are a good sour Gin drink, but you need Cointreau as well.

gin and tonic or fuck off.

add 2 whole key limes for fancy time.

I don't know shit about gin, but 7 month old mountain dew and some wine is all kinds of win.

Just add a lot of ice and a lime slice.

My drink of choice is usually Bombay on the rocks with a lime. The ice takes away most of the bite and the lime gives it great flavor.

I really like Tanqueray on its own but since I drink my gin either on the rocks w/ lime or with ginger ale, I tend to favor Bombay because I think it blends better with the other flavors.

But yeah, Gordon's isn't as bad as you think when you think OMG CHEAP LIQUOR. I've drank it neat before and, really, it's not that bad.

At home I have a massive bottle of premium beefeater stuff, and a pot of hendricks. Both are sex on ice (particularly the hendricks).

Bombay >>> Beefeater.

Beefeater is 100 proof though.

vodka is an absolute staple ingredient, and i guess if had to drink cheap, i'd rather drink cheap vodka than any other cheap liquor.

but on its own? what's the point? if you're a guy over the age of like 23, by now, there should be some kind of alcohol you enjoy on its own merits. beer, wine, liquor, whatever. vodka always tastes like nothing.

i almost went for it but i opted for my standby, the 16yo lagavulin

Hendricks is pretty much the pinnacle of gin, and its not too bad on the wallet considering.

Lagavulin tastes like Macdonald's BBQ sauce. I like it more than most scotches though.

Bombay Sapphire Gin and Tonic for me. Tanqueray is alright.

edit- and vodka is for girls so they can dump it in a bunch of cranberry juice and get slutty.

Rum Runner on the rocks. Be careful though, most bartenders make them pretty damn strong and they will kick your ass. Tasty as hell though.

Also, if you are at the beach or pool bar then they are also delicious frozen.
