For the past 2-3 days, whenever I wake up, I'm dizzy. And no, it's not because I was on a bender the night before.
In the case of Hey Ya, the original song is actually the ironic one. Casually listening to it, it's a catchy hip-hop song played in an upbeat key, but if you listen closer to it, Andre describes the breakdown of a relationship.
In 2006, Obadiah Parker covered it, acoustically. And while still in a major key, the slower rendition actually fits the hopelessness of the lyrics. So, it comes off as the sincere one.
Unfortunately, the popularity of this cover has caused countess asshats to try to gain attention by doing the same, forgetting the whole point to the cover. Mat Weddle has said he has no interest in covering another hip-hop song. And after digging in to it, I dig what he did and respect his decision to leave it at that.
But, to answer your question, maybe before autotune?
