Mario Kart has always been bad for this. You're looking for F-Zero GX, the last fuck-awesome Nintendo-published racer we'll ever get.

Stop that.
what's funny is that there was already the perfectly fine coin system from the original that didn't need fucked with. you drive good and get coins, you go faster by having a higher top speed. didn't need changed imo. i also don't remember the rampant abuse of offensive weapons to the trailing players as much that affected the whole field.
about the only thing that may have needed a change was more risk involved in getting the coins.
The coin system WAS nice. The main strategy in the newer games seems to consist of "stay in 3rd place until the final lap, then destroy everything", BUT, if you can tear-ass and get a half-lap advantage, no amout of blue shells can stop you (because there will be about 40 of those flying at you by this time).
I wouldn't mind it if they re-introduced coins and scaled back the weapons system (or added some defense against blue shells/bullets).
exactly my point. i mean honestly.......give us the original game with better graphics. hopefully that PC mod i posted a couple days ago will do just that (assuming Nintendo doesn't stop them).
 WE ARE AGREEING!
The weapons were perfectly balanced in the original game. Anytime an opponent carried a red shell, you could easily defend against it by holding a shell or banana behind your cart to block, or you might be given the feather, which would still allow you to jump over the red shell if your timing was right. Heck even if the opponent was holding a lightning, you'd usually next pick up a ghost and have a chance at stealing the lightning.
They need to bring back the coins and the feather, imo.
You couldn't hold items behind your kart in the original SNES Super Mario Kart. Your only defense against red shells were to drop an item behind you at the right time (like in Double Dash or to hug a wall and hope it hit that instead of you. The feather sometimes worked, but it was never reliable.
As for item balance in the other Mario Karts, they're fine. Yeah, there are a lot of blue shells flying in MK: DS, but unless the other racers are pretty close they're not going to gain that much on you; and if you're smart and have other people around you when the blue shell is coming, you'll get as close to them as possible and let the explosion radius take them out as well.
