Movies You Loved (But Do Not Like Anymore)

This is a thread about movies you've grown out of, or anything you've recently re-discovered only to say "I am kind of disgusted that I liked that in the first place".

After watching it again the other day, I have come to the conclusion that Reservoir Dogs is perhaps not as good of a movie as I remember it being. The dialog comes off as super-forced, the acting is perhaps not as awesome as I remembered, and fatally, nothing fucking happens in that movie. There are super-long stretches of overly 'clever' talking that just kind of piss me off now, but I know I loved every minute of the movie back when I originally saw it. But now? Fuck this movie. It's goddamn terrible.

It's making me come to the realization that probably quite a few of my high school/college favorites are actually not particularly good movies. I'm a bit concerned to watch some of 'em again (Fight Club). Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is already a victim of this phenomenon, not to mention the countless other Tarantino ripoffs from the last fifteen years.

So, what old favorites do you now really, really hate?

Robocop: That's right! I've seen the movie so many times on cable, that I can't stand more than 15 minutes of it at a time. The acting sucks, the storyline goes nowhere, and the action isn't all that great.

I can't say that this has happened to me. But I have found myself liking old movies in different ways as I get older. There is a whole layer of dark/adult humor in movies like Ghostbusters I didn't get when I was 5

Wow, a fairly original thread topic for once.

I'll have to give this one some thought. There's actually been a few movies that I've run into this problem with lately.

This is still a pretty recent film, but I just rewatched Serenity and found myself hating more than a couple things about it.

Over the last couple weeks I had found some time to rewatch a few of my favorite Firefly episodes (Basically all of Disc 3 and Jaynestown). It's been a couple years since I watched Serenity, but I had remembered liking it very much, being a fan of the series. Guh, not so anymore.

Many of the plot devices (or holes, rather) and the character development of Mal are so forced and not in tune with the series. And if you weren't familiar with the series, the film would likely be unwatchable. Sure, theres some good stuff going on, and I'm always happy to just see more Firefly any way I can, but it will be a long while before I watch this again.

But once I saw it again a few years back I realised how horrible of a film it is. But I still own it for the heck of it.





There are probably more movies that I need to add, but I"ll have to add them later.

Teen Witch. I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid. I just watched it again and it's pretty lame. Typical 80s, but lame nonetheless.

Man how could I forget this one. One one of those "classics" from back in the day I watched as a kid. Me and some buddies from school sat down, and watched part 1 and 2, and did nothing but laugh the whole time. Oh well, the suit is cool, and there is always the anime.

Road House.
I really cant stand to watch it anymore. But back in the day it was the movie to watch. The throat ripping scene i thought was amazing at the time. Now? bleh.

Last Dragon

Event Horizon, I LOVED this movie back when it came out. And while I don't think It's bad. I don't think It's as cool as I remember it, a whole lot more predictable now.

Deep blue sea-I should preface this by saying i love giant shark movies. And all things considered this is one of the better ones, but there are a lot of things in it that are real WTF moments.

Pitch black-A remember this one just being a whole lot better than it actually is.

any kevin smith film, i thought they were so cool back in high school. i really dug boondock saints when i first saw it, but i watched it again last year with some friends and we didn't even make it through the halfway point.

The only movies I loved enough to buy I still love.

That's not what I mean, that scene with the boys ghost is a good example. I hadn't seen the movie in good five years and recalled nothing. Yet I could see each step of that scene coming a mile off

I saw clerks again recently, and I turned down sex to finish it. It might have even popped into my top 10 movies ever. Fucking hilarious.

Um, I sorta always knew when I was watching bad movies, even when I was young. But I tried to get myself to enjoy them. No shocking revelations though.

I think The Goonies still holds up as a fun family movie, I watched it a couple of months ago when I got sick.

I think a lot of the anime movies I used to think were also are probably retarded in retrospect, but I haven't really put that to the test yet.

I used to have, like most kids, really bad taste in movies. I liked Batman and Robin when it came out for... different reasons than I like it (I'm not sure that's the word for my relationship with that movie) now.

I might have to think on this longer, I can't really think of a shining example aside from stuff like ID4 or Volcano. But I just liked those at the time, I was always obsessed with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, BTTF--and I still am.

There's a few Mel Brooks movies that just don't work for me anymore. Men in Tights in particular, mostly because it seems like it was written with 10 year olds in mind (the "Godfather" sequence is super fucking painful to sit through). I don't really remember if his "Dracula" was any good in the first place, but it sure isn't now.

Any comedy that hinges on current pop culture references, ESPECIALLY ones that are animated, goes straight to hell within two or three years. Try to watch Shrek again.

I don't really have a problem with Mel Brooks movies still. The good ones (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs) are still good. Men in Tights, History of the World, etc are silly but not terrible. But then there's stuff like Dracula and High Anxiety that were never very good in the first place. I didn't even like Dracula when I was 10.

The Naked Gun is still funny, right? I haven't seen it in too long.

Shrek was bad when it came out.

The Karate Kid. I loved this back in the day, but it's pure torture now. YOU'RE THE BEST! AROUUUUND! Kill me pls.

Friday the 13th. Freaked me out years ago, now it's just excrutiatingly boring.

Gremlins. Phoebe Cates is hot and Gizmo is cute, but other than that, it's become really annoying.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Everyone in this movie bugs the crap out of me now. In fact most John Hughes films have not aged well.

Top Gun. Makes me want to punch Tom Cruise in the neck more than ever. He's such a jerk from start to finish. Iceman should have kicked his ass.

Independence Day. Blew me away when I saw it in the theater. The scene with the trapped alien hyptonizing the President is still pretty cool, but the rest of it has aged very very very poorly. It's not funny, tense, or exciting, just supremely lame.

Footloose. It's so frickin cheesy and cornball now, it's not even enjoyable from a nostalgic standpoint.

Altered States. I had fond memories of this, but upon rewatching, it hit me as really really stupid.

Yes a lot of older anime movies are not that great, but I have to say Ninja Scroll tops the list of crap for me.

Rushmore. Watched this for the fist time in a few years. Outside of a few good lines, Max is almost completely unlikable. His competition with Bill Murray for that English teacher lady is astoundingly creepy. On both fronts, even.

I never understood why anybody liked this movie to begin with. I didn't enjoy it at all when it first came out and was confused by all the accolades it received.

Also, on the Ninja Scroll front... Ninjas, Demons, Ronin, Zombies, Rape, Beheadings. You guys are nuts, that shit's awesome.

Ninja Scroll started me down a long four year path lined with faggotry, hentai, anime conventions, and doing this ^_^.

I'm not sure I could ever forgive that movie for that.

I firmly believe that every movie that guy makes will fall into this category. I have no idea why people are fans of these crappy movies.

Similarly, did anyone say Napoleon Dynomite? I think people like N.D. and Rushmore for the same reason. The characters look so interesting and entertaining that you think the movie should be good, and people trick themselves into thinking it is. But the movies actually take the interesting characters and set up, and make the most boring, not funny movie possible.

I like Rushmore BECAUSE it's kind of weird and creepy. <3 Wes Anderson.
I caught ND well after the fad had worn down and didn't like it at all.

90% of the anime stuff that I thought was really good in HS/College is totally fucking terrible.

Conversely, a lot of Disney stuff I had written off is actually pretty damn solid. I might not be into the stories/dialouge all the time, but the animation is so, so good. The animators really are acting through the characters, something that does not exist in Anime.

This thread makes me want to re-watch Ninja Scroll. I can't imagine it's not good anymore. Are you people telling me you are over tree rape? I for one don't think I am.

I watched Rushmore a couple days ago. I still enjoy it, although I seem to take something completely different from the movie each time I see it.

The "these are O.R. scrubs" "OH ARE THEY?" line is SO AWESOME also the "I'm a bit lonley these days" while smoking two cigarettes at the same time.

I never liked Napoleon Dynamite though. Pure shit.

I'm also not big on rewinding and watching the same scene most of the time. It ruins the impact.

Except the first time I saw the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and leatherface clobbered the dude in the head with hammer and he screamed like a girl. I had to rewind that because I was laughing so hard.

The Fifth Element is starting to lose its charm on me. I used to LOVE this movie, but now I can't really sit through an entire showing of the flick. That kind of bums me out.

I thought I was getting over the LOTR movies for a while and never felt like watching them.

Then I got sick and watched all of them and was re-afirmed. I don't know why I doubted it, honestly.

i've never watched this movie the whole way through and evertime i try i can only stand it in 15 minute bursts. unfortunately it's always the first 15 minutes.

I didn't like Ninja Scroll when I saw it, but I came to hate it when everyone called it one of the "animés you show people who don't like animé" films. And on that same thread, I hope the old Ghost in the Shell movie still holds up. Man, the opening credits scene was amazing back in the day.

I have to second both Boondocks and Reservoir Dogs. I LOVED these movies when they came out, and turned many people onto them. Now I can't stand watching either.

edit: What about the flipside of the coin? There are movies that I hated the first time I saw them, but then for whatever reason watched them again and loved them. Austin Powers, Half Baked, and Kung Pow are among some of mine.

I liked it more so for the animation. I like how the older anime had detailed animations, and backgrounds more so than alot of todays anime.

Ghost in the Shell leave you in "WTF" mode, while NS left you in a "DAME that was the shit" mode.

Ghost in the Shell is a "loved it, now hate it" flick. I liked all the "wow, neat" parts, but now it's soooo slow. The sequel was pretty bad the first time out.

Wondering how Akira is now.

I've never seen Rushmore and I don't like the Royal Tennebaums but if you don't like the Life Aquatic then you're a stupid cunt.

But Stormy's a Red Sox fan, so that's like, redundant.

Ninja Scroll is/was terrible.

Same with stuff like Independence Day. lol that anybody ever liked that trash. Being young is no excuse.

Rushmore is the only Wes Anderson film I've seen that I haven't loathed to the core.

[Edit]: Now that I think about it, I've only seen Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. The latter was so awful, though, that it put me off seeing anything of his ever again.

I watched Ghost in the Shell recently and actually liked a lot more than before.

I've never gotten through Ninja Scroll. That shit's awful.

When I was a kid I used to watch Enemy Mine all the time with my Dad, I loved it. Watched it for the first time since the late 80's with my g/f about a year ago and she laughed and cringed throughout the entire thing. I watched in silent horror; how did I miss so much cheesy lameness?

I don't get this idea that LOTR is just about dudes walking around. I mean sure, they walk places but shit goes down on the way. They can't teleport the fucking thing into Mordor. That would be like a 10 minute movie.

Well. Knowing Peter Jackson, it would be at least 2 and a half. But still.
