If it's a chain place with a tip jar, no. If it's a privately owned family sort of deal, always.
Not tipping for bad service makes sense. I know it's not the driver's fault most of the time, but if they get handed shitty tips for bad service they're going to complain to management, and management will deal with the lame duck in the kitchen.
But tipping for takeout doesn't make any sense. Nobody is serving you. The cooks get paid minimum or a wage like everyone else. The server doesn't do shit. I've never tipped for takeout or even been asked for a tip for takeout.
I'll tip for delivery or being waited on. I'm not sure I know why people would need tips for me coming in to the store to pick up food I'm already paying for.
so they don't spit in your food, pretty much
I think a servers job (even when doing take out) is a little harder then you all realize. Granted, the kitchen staff gets the hardest part of the work in a restaurant, but the servers have a SHITLOAD of running to do, they're regular wage is next to nothing and have to hustle (yes, even for take out) to get everyone their food on time. I can't pin this on every restaurant for sure, but that's the way it is in my place.
Everyone has eaten, and will continue to eat food with spit, boogers, and ball hair in it. If you think you haven't you're kidding yourself, or you've never worked in a restaurant.
I used to deliver chineese food and pizza. I've seen, and done some terrible things.
Life goes on.
sure, but i think being the guy who tips helps you out a bit.
