Do you tip when picking up takeout?

She said she doesn't drop money in tip jars if it's a chain restaurant and does if it's a mom&pops shop. Servers usually get paid the same way wherever they work and unless you've done some investigative detective work beforehand on the tip system of each restaurant it doesn't make sense to punish people in one chain just because they work there as opposed to someone working at Tom's Diner.

It's the same shit. The brand chain just has a nice air freshener on it.

Tip someone for handing me a bag? I tip for everything else that calls for tipping, but I don't think I've ever gotten take out, and I don't think I would have known to tip.

I'd even tip them if they had to walk out to the car or something, but not for just putting things in a bag. You get tips for waiting on people or doing something extra, handing people their food is what they're paid to do.

I think I'm going to resolve to never tip anybody from now on.

Yeah, but you're forgetting a lot of them don't get paid much. The tips are their pay. Federal minimum wage laws don't have effect in this situation.

Oh I know they don't get paid much, which is why I leave good tips. But I just don't know if there's enough work involved in handing someone a bag to earn one.

I'm wondering if it's actually a waiter/waitress who give people take out most of the time. I would think they would be too busy. A lot of times I see it done by someone in the kitchen or whoever is at the register.

I don't even think most hostesses are payed lower than minimum. Like... fuck off. As if keeping track of a couple orders is hard. MOst of the time they ask for your name and it's on the bill anyway. If you can hand someone a piece of mail with their name on it you can CSR.

The only prerequisite is a pair of fucking hands.

I'm not saying I would give them regular tips, but a dollar or two really can't hurt. Different places have different systems as well. If the Hostess/Host is getting the tip, then it's a different story, because they do get paid a little more and their job isn't quite as stressful.

But they're already paid to do that. I'm paying that with my pizza and they're getting paid by the management via a wage.

I understand the idiocy behind servers and delivery drivers and I begrudgingly tip them even though I think it's a dumb fucking system. But I won't tip someone for nothing, or that I perceive I'm already paying for. I see this as way too much gratuity.

No man, I hear what you're saying. If the tip would be going to the server though, then I think it's reasonable to give them a small tip. The host/hostess are usually idiots and wouldn't know how to spend the money anyway.

We have a system where part of an employee's wages are determined by the customer. Why? Because it puts power in your hands to make sure you get proper service, and to reward or punish based on said service. This system works well for the majority of people and provides employees with good incentive to treat you right. Maybe in Japan, with their culturally ingrained pride in hard work and whatnot, such an incentive is not necessary. But here in America, I get bad service often enough with the tip system in place. When I imagine how bad things would be if they had no incentive to give good service, I'm glad we at least have what we do.

I wouldn't tip servers and drivers with a grudge though. Your tip, in a practical sense, is a part of the actual price, the only difference being that it allows raise or lower the price based on quality (hence why tips are a good idea). If they got rid of tips, then the cost would be added to the product, so its not like you are paying any more than you would have to otherwise, Drewbacca. I mean, honestly, do you think that money would stay in your pocket in an alternate system?
