No see the difference is as I said in my first post I NEVER EXPECTED a tip, for doing my job. I didn't consider the people who didn't tip me assholes. I was paid to pump gas, that's what I did. Unlike a waitress who is paid less than minimum wage and it is expected that they'll make up the difference by providing a good service. Take out is different though, the cook is doing the majority of the work and you're putting it in a bag. If you delivered it to my house, you'd get a good tip, if I sat down and you served me, you'd get a good tip. If I'm driving there and you're putting the food in a bag and I'm doing all the rest then no.
I answered yes. But I admit its a conditional yes.
I believe that the person who is friendly enough to talk to me while I wait for my food to be ready to pick up, or throws some extra chips or candies in the bag, or recognises me from last time deserves a buck or too. And even if they dont do all that, I dont stay and make them get me change if the total is $18.95 and I hand them a 20.
Ive never been a server, but I have friends who have. I dont know if its a CA thing or a federal thing, but waiters get charged taxes on tips they should make, not what they actually do. Thats why they get all bent out of shape when you dont tip them. Not because theyre out a few bucks, but because they have to also pay taxes on the money that they never even got. Doesnt mean that you should reward poor service, but a person doing their job right, even if its just handing you a bag of food, deserve a little something.
There is a Mexican food restaurant that is right across the way from my store, and we take out from there fairly often. The guy who is a host there (and a waiter) gave us a 20% off card good for the whole year. He always gives us tortilla chips, and whats most important to me as a customer, he remembers me when I come in. So Im happy to give him a few extra dollars when I go there.
Who the fuck leaves a tip for takeout? You mean I go out of my way to pick it up and you expect a tip? No. You should be glad to be getting my business at all. If you are mad that you're getting paid minimum wage for serving food maybe you should've paid attention in class instead of wondering whose dick you'll be sucking for weed later that day.
Sucks to be you.
Tipping for full-service gas in jersey is fucking stupid, and not required at all.
Also, tipping for pickup because someone makes minimum wages and it "really helps them out" is fucking stupid. You can justify tipping anywhere really, it's all service, whether its someone bagging your groceries nicely, or helping you find some jeans at the clothing store. It's really kind of terrible how tipping is supposed to be about compensating for good service, but ends up being a matter of "wait am I supposed to tip for this? Is their pay based around the fact that they receive tips on a regular basis?"
Word.
Also, of the 10,000 times i've gone to a gas station in jersey with my girlfriend, not once have they ever washed the windows or checked the oil. I still wouldn't tip them, but if they did, i might feel bad about it.
