CHAINSAW!!!!!!!!!! WHAT WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
You better have time to join us in Gears 2, Mr. Digipen.
I hope so too.
So Gears of War 2 has been announced as one of the demos that will be available to play at this year's PAX. If I get the chance to play it (I'm sure the lines are going to be long and annoying), I'll write some impressions on this thread.
Exclusive quickie Gears of War 2 PAX impressions for TNL.
Awesome. 5vs5 is sweet. Can't wait to try the other modes later today if the lines are not ridiculous.
Very cool to hear!
(if you can please rob about 10 copies for us TNL'rs)
Here's more extensive exclusive TNL hands-on play.
The two new stages are seem to be very good from initial play. Security has one area that's has laser wires on all entrance ways. You'll have to hit a switch to temporarily deactivate the laser wires (otherwise it's instant DBNO). The reward is the powerful detached sentry gun seen in the E3 demo.
The other stage is River. It's an outside arena that contains a two-story destroyed shed that's perfect for seeing what's happening at the ground level. There's a bridge that you can walk under that will remind you of Canals, only the weapon there is a boomshot.
The lobby system looks great and you can change modes and maps without having to start a new room (at least in LAN play). Also, in addition to choosing your character before the round starts (which you can see the torso of the character, so you have a better idea of who you're picking), you can also decide whether to start with the chainsaw or the Hammerburst.
I never got the chance to wield a flamethrower, but it's awesome to see it burn someone to a crisp.
Smoke grenades are more useful now. If you are within the range of a smoke grenade explosion, you will be knocked down and momentarily stunned as you get back up.
Chainsawing someone from behind is good times. And if you and your opponent try to chainsaw each other, the "Tap B as fast as you can" duel occurs, and rewards the player who tapped B more. Although I could have sworn that in a few instances, the duel was started when someone was chainsawing me as I was trying to shoot them with the Lancer.
I played Annex on Friday (meh), but thankfully got some rounds of Guardian and Execution going today. Guardian looks like a solid addition to the TNL/Gears of War rotation, as you have unlimited spawns until the designated team leader of the round dies. Any deaths after that means elimination. Great mode.
New Gridlock plays like the old one, only they moved the sniper rifle closer to the wall next to the two stairs in that central area. I saw the shield picked up near where the grenades are, but I'm not sure if that's the default spawn spot.
Hostage taking is very cool and can turn the tide of a match. In one round, I saw a Locust player win against two Cogs by taking down one Cog and using him as a shield while he took out the other Cog. I also saw a Locust holding a Cog hostage take a direct hit Boomshot without damage because the hostage took the brunt of the blast. You're pretty much invincible from frontal attacks until your hostage disintegrates from too much damage.
The drawback to hostage-taking is that you can only use the pistol, you move a lot slower, and you're more susceptible to being chainsawed from behind (as I painfully found out in one round). You can also neck-snap your hostage, but must remember to switch your gun or else you'll still walk around with a pistol. I've seen a few players blow a few rounds because they forgot to change from pistol to chainsaw after they eliminated their hostage. Also, if you are picked up as a hostage, you are considered dead.
That thing where the texture maps are loaded a few seconds after the round starts still happens occasionally.
A weird thing I noticed is that if you hit someone with a weapon (in this case, the Hammerburst), they turn blacker (and not in a RDJ Tropic Thunder way). Could be a bug.
I asked the guy running the ten-person demo station if we could play a round of Capture the Flag, but he said they weren't doing that anymore because earlier in the morning, a CTF round lasted for nearly half an hour (so much back-and-forth), and they wanted people to play shorter rounds so that more people could play. The guy in front of me playing was also in that CTF round and said that it was long, but a lot of fun.
Sorry Netwurked, but the systems running the demos are locked behind a security case. You wouldn't want those copies anyway since it only has three maps.
Thanks for the write up.
Awesome review Cow.
How was the 5v5 and did you get to play the 5 teams of two mode?
