Nothing's wrong with Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Tetsuo.
Everything's wrong with this being made.
That cast doesn't sound horrible to me, actually.
I was much more surprised with just about every Spider Man casting announcement and all of those worked out well. I have some faith in this.
Anime sucks, so this will suck as well.
As much as I hate to agree with Joust, I just can't get into this genre.
This should be rich.
I dunno,
Akira the movie as a whole leaves the viewer in a WTF state because at the end, you realise you have no idea what the fuck is going on. It's only after some research will you barely understand that scop of the story. And knowing hollywood, they will change and alter everything. Then the actual anime will get milked to hell, and you'll have people claiming to have been fans for a long to when really they just watched the american made movie...... blah I'm ranting now.
Considering that the movie will be terrible, no you won't.Quote:

It's basically a story told over ten phonebooks with three action scenes, of which all three were in the first movie.
If it's a two part epic like they say it might be, and they follow the manga, I don't see why this wouldn't have the potential to be incredible.
Plus, Leo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have proven themselves plenty in recent years to shake off their teenage heart-throb stigma.
Leo Dicaprio can NOT be a badass. It's not possible.
WRONG
Tetsuoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
KA NAY DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
I think maybe people say "genre" when they mean "category". Anime is definately a category.
Anime is a genre.
I think maybe people say genre when they assume all anime is the same thing.
IBTN
You can't even argue there's not a common thread beyond just being animated, though.
Dadgum Jap Toons!
So are they gonna change their names, cause Craprio is white as hell.
Grave of the Fireflies would make a perfect Sailor Moon episode.
I was being sarcastic.
You sure fucked that up. ;)
See Mech's reply? It's the same thing with different series/movies.
I can kinda see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo. Really.
Who's directing this? I could see this being good if Ridley Scott did it. Kind of a Black Rain/Blade Runner thing.
Goddamn Clownshoes McLame-o!
I forgot how much I missed the Ninja Turtle voice.
I bought it on PSP UMD because I read that it had the original English track.
No dice - just mild-flavored Pioneer redub.
The only VHS copy of this I ever encountered (which was in a rental store that I then bought it from) was subbed, so it was years before I understood the name yelling jokes. I've still never heard much of the original dub.
The Streamline dub was the one they used to air on the Sci Fi Channel all the time.
Back before they got MST3K, I think.
That was the version I saw in the theater when it was making the rounds stateside, and I watched the shit out of my original VHS copy (to the point that all the colors were washed out into reds and blues), so that particular voice track is the definitive version for me.
I remember reading somewhere (or maybe it was on one of the laserdisc docs) that Otomo himself wasn't happy with the Japanese voice cast he ended up with (cast a bunch of real street kids for realism, but they couldn't act) and liked the sound of the English version better.
I remember seeing it for the first time during the "Animation Festival" the Sci Fi Channel did in 1993 or 1994. Same year introduced me to Dominion, Project A-Ko, Robot Carnival and a bunch of other awesome stuff. Vampire Hunter D, possibly, but I'm not sure. It was hosted by Ralph Bakshi... yep, that year introduced me to a lot of things that permanently warped my young mind. :D
Sci Fi used to be awesome. Hell, that's the first place I saw Zeiram. What happened? :(
I know I watched Akira and Robot Carnival on Sci-Fi. I think Vampire Hunter D might have been on TNT or something though.
It all blew my mind back then, so good.
My first experience with Akira (and Princess Mononoke) was via hacked pay-per-view.

lol wrong akira
Ha! WTF! How does research wind up with a Rival Schools pic?
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/a...4&d=1203395505
LOL
I would watch a live action rival schools.
For pure hilarity.
It would be like a really happy version of Battle Royale.
That... would be awesome.
I don't care for the new dub that came out on the metal box dvd a few years ago. it has no yelling at the end and it sucks. I kind of remember having the old dub on a DVD? perhaps it was bootleg. Either way I want to re-watch it but i want the yelling and I don't own a VCR. What do i do? JO IN2 TORNADOIf this isn't in this movie this movie loses.
fixed.
The yelling is basically the entire point of Akira.
I like the metal box, but I'd trade "Disc One" for a full-screen VCD copy of the old dub in a heartbeat.
I wonder of they will change the name to Steve.
STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE!
BBBBHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBBBBB!!!!!!!!!
Just not the same.
That was awesome.
I have the DVD metal case version and there is a decent amount of yelling it imo. I never watched the original dub, so hopefully when they put this on blu ray they will include all versions.
It does not have nearly enough, I can tell you flat out.
Wait, you guys didn't get the original dub on the 'Special Edition' DVD that came out a few years ago?
I'm sure my copy has both...
*Confirmed, I has both dubs on the one disc.
If it does I'm watching Rhydant's right now.
Wiki says that's a "UK Release" thing. So, no. Which is some bull sheeeet.
Fuck me, right?
Ah, We'll looks like AU got the UK release too.
Fuck, now I feel like watching it.
"Men, we're going to the Olympics..."
Hey! That's good news. That means that a good quality rip with the Streamline dub should exist. Time to finally replace that crappy VCD quality one I got in high school.
Gotta stay consistent with the usage of "colour", also. :chick:
FUCKING HOLLYWOOD........seriously, someone needs to shove a stick up one of those people ASSES who green light this stuff.
To the outraged Akira fans: have you read the manga?
Because I don't see how you cannot be excited at the prospect of a two part epic that actually covers the entire story.
I have all the comic books in plastic bags with nerd boards behind them hidden away from the sun's evil, evil rays in a box in my parents basement. They're the original run. I'm the shit.
I'm excited about the idea but I'm afraid its going to pan out like a wet fart.
Dude, I just like the screaming.
IMO
If the movie gets a good director, I'll have a little hope for it. Ridley Scott would be great for this film imo. If they are actually gonna try to get alot of info in from the comic, and not base it on the OVA Akira, then it chance of sucking has decreased a little.
Akira wasn't an OVA /nerd
Your right, but it might as well been an OVA with all the story detials left out. Either way, two movies telling the story directed by Ridley might have a chance.
Seems like kind of a waste of Ridley Scott. Why do you want him?
I'm not even holding by breath that this will be made, how long has battle angel been in the works?
The worst part:
We all know that if Hollywood does an Akira movie, the plot will end up making some sort of sense. That will piss "true fans" off to no end.
Also:
"Neo Los Angeles is about to explode!"
Every time I saw the manga at the store I would pick it up, feel the weight of one volume, look at the 19 other volumes and then put it back on the shelf.
I've never seen the original dub :(
There are only six volumes.
LIKE THIRTY VOLUMES
EACH ONE A MID SIZED TELEPHONE DIRECTORY
I'm glad at least some people on this thread have some sense and are at least slightly accepting of the Hollywood version of this manga.
I love the original Akira movie, it was definitely one of the first things that got me into anime...but after some time you realize that it was by NO MEANS a GOOD movie. Once you get past the cool soundtrack and animation, I realized it wasn't that great, especially AFTER I read the manga and figured out what the fuck it was I just watched.
Im hesitantly optimistic this could be a great couple of movies.
Akira movie, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt?! You can't do better than that for naming two males for the lead roles. Honestly, this is not going to be some Uwe Boll effort if thats the case. Those two dudes are fucking acting studs, and if you think those two arn't amazing actors, you are a fucking retard. Thats not an opinion, its a fact.
