This is why

I managed a Crown Books for over four years, and I share you guys' pain completely. All that "Customer is King" stuff is grade-A cowflop. These people are fully aware of the crap they're trying to pull, and actually think they can get away with talking to the employees however they want. In my mind, giving in encourages people to lie and scam, and that ends up costing the store money. You know, give em an inch, they'll take a mile - it's so true in retail.

I got into trouble from my corporation because I REFUSED to give in to these obvious, obvious scams. But I got the respect of my co-workers (as well as a few intelligent bystanding customers) so I could give a crap about that. I ran the best damn store on the West Coast sales-wise, so no way would I get fired. I also would tell customers, when they got out of line, "If you don't stop treating me, my employees, and my store with this kind of disrespect, I will call the cops on you immediately. Contrary to what you might think, we do not need your business as a customer." Trust me, I had to call the cops a few times because these damn idiots thought I was bluffing. Call me an asshole if you want, but I believe very strongly that just because two people are divided by a counter doesn't mean it's OK for a customer to treat an employee like a lesser species.

I am of the opinion that if everyone in society was forced to work retail for six months, preferably during an inventory and a holiday, this kind of thing wouldn't happen nearly as often.

Hats off to all you retail workers. Any of you who works retail have my infinite respect - IMO it's one of the most difficult jobs there is. Plus the stories are priceless!

Just a quick "Hell yeah!" for Bio here, infinite respect for you on that one Bio. That's what people need to do. I used to get in trouble when I worked at a restaurant, because I was one of the few guys there who wouldn't let these people treat me like shit, tips be damned. If I wasn't telling them to stick it where the sun don't shine, I pulled a few innapropriate acts. I won't bother telling the ice cube story again, I'm sure everyones heard it by now.

I work for a bank (US Bank/Firstar) in the international dept. I, luckily, dont have to deal with any actual customers. However, there are 2 that do down in the branch. Today, at the end of the day, on the last day before this girl goes on vacation a lady comes in trying to buy a relatively small amount of currency with cash. The teller asks her for her phone number and name. She refuses. The teller doesnt know what to do (nobody had every refused to give their name before). She calls up our boss, who in turns calls the head of our department (who just so happens to be my mom). She goes down there, the lady refuses to give her name, claiming that she should not have to, that everybody asks for that shit now and she doesnt have to give it, basically acting paranoid. My mom explains that it is company policy and neccesary do to federal regulations instituted by the OCC. The girl says her name is Mary or something and my mom now asks to see her ID. Of course she is just making it up, but they get the ID long enough to get her phone number. She takes my moms buisness note and says that she is going to write a letter to the paper. Then storms out of the store. Took about an hour....


In the end we wind up calling the number, we get her husband who happily gives us his wives name :) Now the teller has to fill out a report cause it was a suspicous transaction, right before she leaves on vacation. By law they must now fill out a report and give it to the FBI since Sept. 11. So basically, this lady is getting looked into by the FBI now.

And some dude spit on our car and called my mom a dumb bitch on the way home too....great day huh?

I work retail, but luckily I don't have to deal with shit like this. Whether its because I'm a big black guy(size not gut) or because I look like I don't take shit, they don't bother me. I see it happen to the other employees and sometimes the managers, and just shake my head. I also don't take shit from the customers, and I talk the way I normally do around them, because I'm a human being and I'm not saying anything they don't say at home. Should see the looks on mu co-workers faces when I swear around customers, you'd think I just broke one of th eten commandments.

2 year Borders Books and Music retail veteran here...just reading all these fucked up stories makes me mad as they remind me of my own.
