Tiny little lifeforms, where are you?
Star Trek aka the "Cool Table" aka "lol right" is closing the gap on the ballot now.
Khan says "TREK!"
I like them both BUT,
I have to go with Starwars. I recently re watched A new hope in HD ( Yes there is a HD version u gotta dig around 4 it), and the movie still gives me tingle's during the Reble force space battle. "Use the foce Luke" is still as dramatic, and effective as it was years ago when I first watched it as a kid.
Light Saber( "Life Saver" when I was 7 hehe) > ALL.
Here's my opinion on the Trek and Starwars movies:
Star Trek:
1: Terrible movie. Its like one giant tracking shot of the enterprise with some fucking strange voice saying "veeeger" for 2 1/2 hours while an orchestra swells.
2: Probably the 4th or 5th greatest sci-fi movie ever made.
3: Bizzarre and uncomfortable at times (it was like the edgiest and artsiest star trek ever got) but still engaging enough to watch.
4: The funniest Star Trek movie. I know it was like a parody, but I think that was the point. Honestly, when you watch them in order, this movie lighten's the mood considerably, and the jokes are actually funny.
5: A terrible, terrible movie. The saddest part though, is that when it tried to be funny, it actually was, but when it tried to be anything else (preachy, serious, cutting edge, dramatic, etc...)it failed miserably. Still better than Insurrection though.
6: A very fitting end to the old crew.
7: Generations was a movie made to get original trek fans (like my mom) to go see their last Trek movie they will ever carea bout with their children(who like TNG), and its pretty obvious thats what it was made to do. That solar system being demolished by the exploding sun though, is a pretty damn good sequence.
8: Easily the 2nd best Star Trek movie. Frakes was an amazing director. My only complaint is it could have used some of the pacing of Khan, as it move a bit too fast for its own good.
9: Complete, and utter garbage. The worst Star Trek movie ever made.
10: So much potential, and nearly all of it wasted.
Star Wars:
Episode 1 - Awful, awful garbage, with a pretty good lightsaber sequence. Really exposed Lucas as a mediocore director. That kid who played Ani was completely forgetable, and someone explain to me why Lucas filmed this movie in such a style as to suck the personality completely out of every actor in every scene (except for that Obi-wan/Darth Maul exchange, that was pretty visceral). The sad part is, this, like the other "before" films, had some fantastic subtle writing going on, but no one gave a shit because of how terribly they were filmed.
Episode 2 - The biggest travesty of this movie, is all decent subtle writing that went to waste because every other scene is cringe-worthy. Dooku essentially telling a disbelieving Obi-Wan the truth about it all and offering him a chance to join him and overthrow Sidious, Qui-Gon's voice coming through the force as Anakin commits murder and Yoda tries is as shocked at finding out he hasn't joined with the force as he is to find out a Jedi is in trouble, the emperor actually being a fully fleshed out character and, hell, even likable. Good god, the acting is so wooden. After the first movie Lucas should have handed it over to another director and just wrote the scripts, and Episode 2 just drives that point home more.
Episode 3 - A completely average movie, with some really brilliant writing that was overshadowed by some terrible acting and just completley unneccessary exposition (I don't care about grievous, I don't care about the seperatists, its time just get down to business). Its obvious Lucas was too scared to make this movie as dark as it needed to be, and thats pretty sad. Also the original concept of having the Obi-wan/Anakin fight mimic the Vader/Luke (with Obi-Wan hiding after fighting for a long time, and Anakin picking at his mind through the force till he finds something that makes him snap and just start hacking off Ani's limbs) fight from ROTJ was way better than the garbage they replaced it with. God so many dramatic cues missed. Still its servicable unlike 1 & 2.
Episode IV: A really just great all around movie. The humor (my god its actually funny) of this one totally outshadows the force stuff to me though. Its mystical and all, but doesn't really hit its stride till Empire.
Episode V: Probably the most perfect movie ever made. A real contender for greatest movie ever made as well. If Lucas had any brains, Irvin Kershner should have directed every following Star wars movie
Episode VI: Decent movie. The opening does nothing for me, nor do the Ewoks. Other than that, competently filmed. Kasadan was alright, but nowhere near the level of Kershner.
I like both series. I think we overrate the quality of Star Wars to ridiculous proportions though. Star Trek certainly is in the same ballpark as it, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I prefer Star Wars lore, but I love Star Trek's occasional classic episodes. With a gun to my head, I'd pick Star Wars, simply because when its good, its the kind of good that I love.
But thats with a gun to my head.
Lots of words, not a lot of stance.
Whats wrong with the last two next gen movies?
