FUCK YOU Dixon Hill says sup.
Take your Indiana Jones shit to another thread.
lol. Struck a nerve I see.
Let it go.
This is the best thread ever.
I voted Star Wars simply because I was obsessed with it growing up, it's just a part of me. I've seen the original trilogy so many times it's not even funny. Fuck, I watched ROTJ last night.
BUT.
I fucking love Star Trek too. Moreso now more than ever really. Growing up I used to watch TNG with my Grandpa at 7 on FOX. In retrospect he does not seem like the type of man who would like Star Trek, but I mean, he also watched General Hospital every day, so who knows. I also remember seeing Generations in theaters with my dad, which... well I guess is ridiculously appropriate. In the past year I've watched more ST, and a selection of "great episodes" from my girlfriend's trekkie brother. I'm watching TOS now and am eager to get to TNG. Still though, DS9 is something I never watched, every time I tried I got insanely bored and then realized I was watching UPN and then killed myself.
I could talk about Star Wars and Star Trek all day every day. I think they both have a dense and likable universe, but SW has better alien design, and generally better action.
As for the prequels I think it about equals out to all of the shitty Star Trek episodes.
And *is* there a good Star Trek game?
Sadly Alec Gunness hated Star Wars and resented Star Wars fans. I've read that he destroyed all of his Star Wars related fan mail without reading it. I mean, Alec Guinness is a great actor, but Stewart is more awesome. Patrick Stewart is just downright fucking rad.
And then all of her clothes fall off.
There are a few people on the star wars side who I would've thought for SURE would've voted star trek.
But overall I'd say the test results match up with my initial control data quite favorably.
I'll need to run a few more tests and really hammer home my hypothesis, but you can expect a full paper to be published in Scientific Journal hopefully next quarter (pending approval and cross examination).
And some bullet points:
-pretty much all the star trek seasons take a while to hit their stride
-I've never read any star trek or star wars books, what are a few good ones to start with?
-also another thing that makes star trek great:

If they made this movie, I would watch it.
Isn't that what I posted?
They are showing up the same for me.
In all seriousness though, I think that the Empire would do a serious hurting on the federation. I mean, one Borg cube can fuck up like 15 federation ships, imagine dozens of star destroyers along with 100s of TIEs.
Star Wars ship design is radder than Star Trek also
Well considering that one star destroyer is as big as like 500 Enterprises, I don't think it's fair to compare them.
BLAH BLAH BLAH beam over nanites.
OMG NO WAI TEH EWOKS WOULD TOTALLY THROW ROCKS AT THE ENTERPRISE AND KILL IT DEAD!
Well, they can take down the empire.
That was a fucking retarded way to end that series.
BTW, wouldn't a moon sized object having a large nuclear explosion in space destroy their planet?
Josh makes a strong point there.
I don't really have a problem with Ewoks.
Yeah I said, it fuck you. NACHA, WHODINI, AWOOOOOOGAAAAAA
Thief is an Ewok, we should stop making fun of them.
I watched some NG this weekend, good stuff to put in and turn your brain off. I really do enjoy that show.
I'd titty-bang Troi.
Homeworld:
Honoghr
Height:
1.4 meters
Diet:
omnivorous
Associations:
Rukh
If ever a species could be misjudged by its appearance, it is the Noghri. Barely over a meter tall, these gray-skinned bipeds have wiry muscles, incredible reflexes, and surprising strength. They are deadly warriors that have grown up in unthinkable hardship, on a world forever despoiled by warfare.
Yup clears it right up, thanks!
Second paragraph: "...a furious space battle raged over their world, and a shattered capital ship plunged into their primitive planet. The resulting environmental catastrophe poisoned their waters and soils."
The Thrawn trilogy. Expanded universe business.
edit: wait. you just asked if they were in next generation? Dude. the link you posted that business from was STARWARS.COM
Oh it's in the books, I don't really read them. I read the one where Chewbacca died and it sucked, so I have decided to leave them alone.
I do have that huge book with the ship drawings and specs and stuff. It's pretty awesome.
The Thrawn books are the only ones worth reading. Everything else is gutter trash.
Okay, I'll check them out.
That new shit with the tattoo'd pro environment warriors (the Vong iirc) sucks dick.
Author: Timothy Zahn. the 3 part set. not the "Hand of Thrawn" faggotry.
I read half of Heir to the Empire years ago and then lost the fucking book. Need to get back to that one day... one day...
I was watching TOS over Christmas on... whatever channel that comes on, and my dad walked in and said "Wow, great episode!" and then sat down and watched it with me. It was awesome.
Wassup Zahn trilogy. Really good stuff. If you wanted a sequel to the original three, that's how it should go.
I really liked those books. I have no idea about the other "expanded universe" stuff.
The Zahn trilogy, really. Josh is 100% correct.
There are some other good ones. I like the X-Wing series, because I was all about Wedge. Wedge, the dude who bailed in the trench, and survived. Only some of the books are well written though.
Shadows of the Empire is good, but I mean, you played the game.
I've been told that the three Han Solo novels are worth reading.
WAS I TOLD INCORRECTLY?"
All I can say is that i picked up the book about the Vong and read it for about an hour. I then shit on it and set in on fire.
OMG, HI WE ARE WARRIORS WHO LIKE TAT'S AND PLANTS. WE ARE ALL LIKE BAD ASS RESISTANT TO THE FORCE AND OUR SHIPS FLY ON A PLANT'S FARTS!!
pass
I think you could fuck the ridges on her forehead as well.
Because knowing Vader's background will make him better.
I really don't give a shit about origin stories. Give me "good" stories.

Haha, I was reading parts of that website.

First and foremost, we know that Darth Sidious is Senator Palpatine, the official representative of Naboo in the Galactic Senate. I would hope that the readers realize this, but one cannot always count on people to recognize the obvious. Long-standing underestimates of Imperial fleet size, in obvious contradiction to the sheer size of the Death Star (as large as 24 million Star Destroyers), demonstrate that people can indeed be capable of not seeing something that is right in front of their noses.
Spoiler tag that shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've wanted the Zahn trilogy adapted into fully computer generated Episodes 7-9, with the real actors doing the voices, for over a decade.
There's no such thing as a fully computer generated movie, but other than that, I agree.
Is Zahn where everyone suddenly has kids in their late teens/early 20s? I could have sworn I spotted a SW novel pimping its lead as the daughter of Han Solo/Leia.
Star Trek. There's just more to it than 6 movies. Those are six great movies but every Trek show has been at worst, decent (Enterprise) and at best, FIVE-STAR (DS9, esp. the later seasons).
We are watching the TNG DVD sets and have been doing so for over a year. Once we finish... DS9. Maybe Voyager afterwards, and probably never Enterprise.
The Trek movies average out to being really great and you can get all 10 in a box for $85 at Amazon.
I have a roommate that reads all the Star Wars books and they sound really awesome but it's just not the same as seeing it happen.
Quoted for Truth.
Incorrect. My imagination is better than anything hollywood could kick out.
Everyone has huge dicks in your imagination.
I have a bullshit theory: the the better the special effects/graphics/detail/resolution something has, the less active imagination it takes to enjoy it. I like filling in the blanks, and am kind of annoyed when that's done for me. Books > Movies.
The rise of popularity of CGI where you can see the fucking skin pores in things kind of implies to me that audiences are becoming super lazy when it comes to visual entertainment, and actually need to see that shit.
Meh, whatever.
Movies = Books.
Theory verified? Proceed to thesis.
I can enjoy both equally as much, they're both just different forms of entertainment.
The "Books > Movies" Argument is 100% subjective, not just based on lol intelligence, or imagination, because I have one of the best fucking imaginations ever. Yet Movies I can enjoy because they're more relaxing and take less time than a good movie will offer less drag than a book which I don't care how good a book is, there are parts that drag a bit. (Movies this is found more often though).
And by equal I meant in entertainment value.
In terms of story, yes. In terms of visual representation, I think that's more a choice made by the director as opposed to the quality of the special effects. Alien has an amazing costume but limited use worked really well, Cloverfield had a highly detailed CG model but again worked very well with limited use. Depends on what's being told and shown; case by case basis imo.
I think I prefer books but end up spending way more time watching things. Take that however.
They're canon until the movies say otherwise is the rule, generally. There was some shit in "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" that's no longer "valid" because of the prequels/sequels, IIRC.
is that where vader lost his hand by pissing off the emperor?
Oh hell no, I love books in general. I have read a few Star Trek books (actually my earliest exposure to Classic Trek was reading novelizations of those original episodes), but never felt the need to reach out like that for Star Wars. I mean, it's cool that Han and Leia have kids or whatever but I don't really mark out for that at all.
Books > Comics. Same rules apply, shun.
Well yeah. The comic is the derivative media and we already have all the SW books here.
The Original Series is awesome, much better than the movies. I been watching them sequentially during the last few weeks. I'm up to episode 40 out of 79. It's amazing how many popular media references, the series has spun off.
If you're going to read the comics over the books you might as well just read the wikipedia entry for them.
No. Pay attention.
You're either reading shitty books or watching movies based on post-it notes.Quote:

Movies and books both do different things better than the other. And I think a movie being able to strike strong emotional or intellectual chordes is just as impressive as a good book.
Books have a greater capacity for deep, detailed, themes. But I think a movie can (in the right hands) be just as profound.
They're pretty much entirely different monsters.
Well, yeah. You can also say the same thing about comics or manga. Lone Wolf and Cub is a manga that runs for 28 volumes that are 300-pages each and it is one hell of a journey for the reader.
"Things that are really good tend to be good!"
One is gooder than the other though.
Best believe.
They both provide equal entertainment value, one requires less commitment than the other, but the other can provide more. But the longer one always has a lull, a period where you just want it to end so you can get to the fantastic parts, you know it's setting things up but it's still just filler to you because you can see what awaits you.Quote:

Movies = Books in term of entertainment values. A great movie and a great book, both are just as enjoyable, no more no less. Now, book to movie transitions though, I generally enjoy the book more just because there is more substance and some things get lost in the transition.
Yes, that's what I was thinking of when you said books=movies originally, comparing two versions of the same thing.
Wrong, there is no such thing as a book that's so amazing that every part of it is enthralling. There are things about a book that make it so good that you want to keep reading, and I shouldn't have used Filler because it's not. They're just advancing the story in ways they have to. Name one book without a single down Where it's consistantly enthralling and you aren't thinking "I can't wait to find out what happens next" and instead are thinking "Oh man this is so great", and I will go out and buy it today and read it.
What sucks is when movies have those same lulls :P (Which too many do but they're generally in the middle and take up less time).
