Cool. Hope announcing it didn't just get it killed.
Do want. PSP port plz.
Also, what the hell is Ridley doing in that demo?
Because it's fucking Ridley. Synonymous with metriod.
Status page on the site says everything is done except enemies, music, and SE.
Placeholder boss imo.
Must be, cause Ridley was not in Metroid 2 Thief.
Ridley is kickin' it huge?
I must acquire this, asap!
Aight, let me rephrase, Ridley doesn't belong in Metroid 2, and neither do any of the Space Pirates.
Because of omg story? Gay. Dude wants to put Ridley in his remake, party on.
Don't you fuck with my Metroid storyline.
FUCK your Metroid storyline.
"OMG we saw the Alien movies a couple times, also there are bug looking alien critters and a Brain in a Pan. Escape before EXPLOSION."
With Nintendo getting all Metroid crazy with the GBA few years back I'm suprised they haven't remade it themseleves yet...
I am as well, because seriously out of all of them, Metroid 2 needs a remake the most. I've always found Metroid much much more playable still than Metroid 2. Zero Mission was great but 2 really needed the remake more.
Eh, I don't see why not. It takes place on the Metroids' homeworld and seeing as how Metroids appear wherever Space Pirates go, they'd obviously had to have visited (especially considering all the specimens they have in their labs in Prime). It makes sense that they'd have a base or research lab there.
Any excuse to fight more types of things is a-ok with me, no matter how you need to shoehorn it in story-wise.
Fuck it, throw some velociraptors and an ED-209 in there.

Wonderful news for you.
I wish they'd release this before nintendo shuts it down, which is inevitable.
it's apparently been going on for 3 years.
I've had the demo for quite some time, yes.
Nintendo shuts down freeware? (Assumption)
Wow. Never thought anyone really LIKED Return. Fuck, I'm getting my Return.
That's all really cool and if it gets finished I look forward to playing it, but I always have to question how good any new content will be when it comes to fan projects.
It's probably worth noting that the project in the OP isn't the same project as the video Chux just posted.

It's true, but the 2nd project looks 500x better.
Yeah, it's never going to get finished.
Is there a demo for the second one, that looks pretty cool. I tried the demo for the one in the OP and felt the controls were pretty shitty.
Awesome projects. Glad to see that the only Metroid game I liked is getting some attention.
WISE FROM YOUR GWAVE! So the guy doing this has finally made some updates! You can check out his blog http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/
In it he links to his medifire page which has a high quality version of the video below and 2 more recent updates to the demo. I played the most recent today and it was a lot better than the one I played around this time last year. Controls worked much better and it had built in support for game pads. Last years demo I had to download and run joystick 2 keyboard to use a gamepad with it.
The demo does include fights with Kraid (which sucks a bit, the patterns need work as does the layout of where you fight him) and Ridley. Though I think the demo is more just what's possible with the engine he wrote and not an actual level/design/boss stuff from the game. Cause the video below looks like he's more doing a direct remake.
Hell yeah, that looks really good.
Fuck!
Hopefully this guy finishes it before Nintendo decides to make a remake of their own and then force him to stop.
It's finished.
http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/
Well, it's out. More updates are planned.
didn't know about it but grabbed a copy anyway because it's going to be lawyered off the internet by monday afternoon
It would seem in the last few years Nintendo has been pretty lenient about this stuff. As long as he doesn't try to make money off it, they're not going to stop it. See all the Mario and Pokemon hacks out there.
I wish I could play this on my GBA
I'm pretty sure the somersault animation is Samus' NES sprite blurred. That's pretty great.
I'm impressed with what I have played so far. It's super quick and responsive, and it doesn't just feel like Metroid 2 in Super Metroid rom hack form. The rumble support is a nice touch as well.
I spent an hour or so with it using a 360 pad. It plays great, and the levels are all very well done. The music is amazing, too.
I've been playing it with the 8BitDo SNES controller and it feels great. Like a SNES remake we never got.
I would have paid money for this. It's a shame Nintendo dumped all of that "monetary gain" info from their corporate intelligence to make room for that second screen.
Wow it's out finally. I think he's been working on this for a little over 8 years. I've had the page bookmarked forever but forgot about it.
I'm gonna give it a go today and I totally would have paid money for it. Metroid 2 is a big reason I fell in love with handheld gaming.
This is great!! I'm just beginning but I'm real impressed so far.
I will try and check later, It didn't seem to work right off the bat and I went in and just configured the button inputs. I didn't change anything else from the default if that helps.
And Nintendo dropped a DMCA. Glad I grabbed it earlier, played a bit so far and it's really good
Ha! Fuck off are you serious?
Oh well, I grabbed it.
I have no idea what Bbobb is talking about since its still up and there's no mention of such on their blog, twitter, or forum.
It was a file host and had nothing to do with the game.
Current speculation: Nintendo has to do SOMETHING to say it's protecting its copyright so it DMCA's a host instead of C&D the creator and everybody is happy.
That or Nintendo has more coming
Yeah there's zero chance Nintendo is just "being nice"
It has to stick in their craw that a fanmade remake of a game from decades ago is better received than the shit they've been churning out.
There really should be some legal mechanism to emancipate abused games series.
And it looks like the DMCA that Metroid Database got is probably fake.
https://seafoamgaming.com/2016/08/07...am2r-takedown/
Highlights include,
Real DMCA's that Nintendo have released in the past have all come from NCL not NOA
The lawyer behind the DMCA doesn't show up in any googling, linkedin or those kind of searches.
Theres some asshole who has done this before, to other fan games.
We'll see in a week
Oh cka beat me...its Sunday
So turned out that Lawyer does exist so strike one line from that above.
Was it the law firm of Dixon, Yarmouth & Butt?
I wouldn't be surprised if real action comes down. Nintendo's not going to like that a free fan remake is a better Metroid game than that Federation Force game coming later this month.
Other M looks to be a better Metroid game than that one.
I had a chance to play this for a bit. I would have seriously paid money for this shit. It's so good.
I really like the idea of taking a game hurt by inferior hardware and remaking it as if it was on better hardware from that era rather than modern hardware. I still keep hoping for an "arcade" remake of Space Harrier II or 3D.
and Metroid Database has it's link back up.

Hey guys it's Monday what happened
It's disappearing from more places now. At least Nintendo was nice and gave us the weekend to download, since they must've known about it since it was announced 8 years ago.
Just downloaded it and played for about 30 minutes. It's astonishingly good so far, even if it was a commercial release; it's even more impressive considering it's done by one fan, even if it did take him so long to do it. The controls are flawless and the game plays like buttah, and while it's been ages since I played through the GB version, I can already identify areas where he added in new stuff (I may be wrong, but I don't recall globes you have to charge with your beam to open up inaccessible areas). The music is great, too.
Overall it's rad so far...like everyone else here has said, I'd pay for this shit.
Damn, looks like I'm a day or two late. Is there any way to get this? Maybe in PMs?
Fucking google it, you nimrod.
I find the jumping too sped up, and the platforming a little difficult. The original is the other extreme (super float) but a happy medium exists. I hate that pointless double jump move too that only serves to fuck me up when I do it by accident.
But overall it's very good. Feels like a lost SNES game.
Nope, it's not... but you can find it if you try.
I really wish this could have hit for GBA. I think it's better than Zero Mission and Fusion after just a little bit of playtime.
It feels a little clunky, but I've only played with a keyboard so far. I played a lot of Zero Mission and this game takes a lot of cues from that game. There is a lot of new content here that was a nice surprise. Part of the charm of Metroid 2 was this murky isolated feeling from the shitty gameboy hardware, and there's none of that feeling here, but it's a great update.
Aiming in particular is weird!
I'm well into the Gammas now and it's getting tough, I actually died at one of them! Also realized I could have been wall jumping the entire time... right after I found the Space Jump. Ahh well, live n' learn.
Yeah, Nintendo is really going after this with a vengeance. I'm sure it's still easily found in some dark corners but I'm glad I grabbed it off the dev's blog when I could.
Nintendo is pretty dumb, eh?
I think jealous is a better word to describe them, with this guy putting out a better metroid game (albeit a remake/remaster) than they have in the last 10 years
I wonder if they're going to go after that Mother 3 fan translation next. You know, just to seem like the Good Guys.
Yeah put it on vc.
Wasn't the newest version of sonic cd a screen hack? And sega just said cool beans and released it?
Not only that, the guy behind it has been involved in several Sonic remasters, and he's involved in Sonic Mania.
Sega does what Nintendon't.
Tried this out fot a few minutes a couple of days ago and it was great. Makes me want to play both and compare them.
Inevitable. They got IP to protect. At least its out there and people can find it easily. Its pretty great!
It's only inevitable if you ignore the fact that Sega and others have taken the high road. Thankfully Nintendo's naivety with regard to the internet includes thinking this will actually do anything.
Agree on both points.
They are throwing money away. They could have offered him pennies an hour and sold this. It would have been very little cost and mostly profit.
But Nintendo.
Shit. They could have just released it and paid him nothing. Instead they just screw him and fans.
If gaming cons are anything like comic conventions, he should just set up a table and sell his 'fan art'.
if samus had grown a dick and fucked a metroid he'd probably be in the clear
How big is this game? I've put in all this time and I'm only 30 or 40%
