Trust the guy who once rode shotgun: Nobody Jaromir Jagr has ever seen drove like Mario Lemieux.
"With all due respect for [Sidney] Crosby and [Evgeni] Malkin, I don't think they are Mario Lemieux," said Jagr, preparing to go to Pittsburgh, his first NHL home, for tomorrow's night second-round opener between the Rangers and Penguins.
"I say that with all due respect because the game has changed.
"The gap between the best and worst players on a team [today] is very small. The gap between Mario and the rest of the guys when I was in Pittsburgh was so huge he was able to score 20 points in one series. I don't think those kids are able to do it. If I am wrong I am going to apologize and [say], 'Great job.'
"There were games we won 6-5 that Mario scored six points. The next night, 5-3, he scored five. [Crosby] can do it once in a while but not every game like [Lemieux].
"Some nights you can't tell who is first line and fourth line in this new NHL. [Wayne] Gretzky in the '80s was far better than anyone else. So was Mario in the '90s. You came to watch the individual because they were so much better. I love to watch highlights of when great players dominated.
"I wish I could do it. It's not working anymore."
simple mind games. Agitate the agitator. Avery is runnin his mouth constantly on the bench. It was nice to see Gill and Laroque coming after Avery and the end of the game. He will be put in place.
The goal that NY gt called back on really sucked. Shitty way to win, but Im sure shits gonna hit the fan up in NY. Good games ahead, gentlemen.
I think Avery is great. Hes a pest, and gets people to react. But he also can score, and make great plays. Lots of other legendary pests have never been able to play good hockey.
I would really miss it if guys like Avery went away. Hockey is the only sport out there does not baby the players. Do you want it to be like the NBA? Where rules exist about wagging your finger? Oh sure, you can wag it to the crowd, but if you do it to the player thats a technical. Honestly.
I'd prefer guys like Stevens to guys like Avery. I prefer talent to goons and class to clowns.
If you're standing in or around the crease you should expect to get dumped and you shouldn't fucking cry about it.
I'm glad the NHL doesn't baby the players. I'm not glad they keep changing the rules.
I could go on about other things I don't like in reference to player archetypes. That list of mine makes it very difficult to get super enthused about the NFL, and just adds to the list of things I dislike about the NBA.
Anyway how about this Sharks-Stars series? It's fucking great. It's too bad that shitty call led to a shittier make-up call which changed the texture of this game, but Turco is playing fucking great, like he did last year, and the Stars' uh...stars....are putting the puck away when they get the chances, something San Jose has been having trouble doing but FULL CREDIT to Dallas for playing MONSTER defensive games. All of them. They're protecting down low extremely well, stopping a lot of centering feeds from the sides and behind the net, and really coming on strong on the backcheck. San Jose may look great on the fast break but they're just not outplaying Dallas on a set offense.
Same here, but Avery is a minority. Each team I suppose has one guy of his ilk, but most arn't effective enough these days to the level of Avery.
Dallas is in the fucking zone. They were not this sort of offensive presence during the regular season. Low scoring games, and not a huge break away threat. I suppose that trade deadline really worked out for them, or something. None of it means squat though without Turco.Quote:

San Jose OUGHT to win two. Turco can't stop everything, they'll have a breakout win and a tight win....but they'll need to win the next one.
Or maybe Turco CAN stop everything. San Jose may have won tonight's game without that series of bad calls however...this series is still ridiculously tight. Turco and Modano have been the difference makers.
Did you see the slow motion footage of Marleau jumping over a puck, that then found its way between Nabakovs legs? Just as the shot was carried through, Marleau brings his feet togethor and hops, just barely clearing the puck. If he stood there, the puck would have been deflected.
I don't believe that Dallas is going to sweep San Jose, but they will go back to the Shark Tank with a 3-1 lead.
