They Just Closed SEGA's Racing Studio

yup, the 60 person team that made Rally Revo is shutting down immediately. this makes me sad. i love that game.

Sega has confirmed closure of its Sega Racing Studio, which, despite ballooning to more than 60 employees, has managed only a single release since its creation in 2005. One, and done.

"The decision is part of a review of Sega's Western Development Studios to ensure that each studio is a profitable entity in its own right, and unfortunately the Sega Racing Studio's 5 year plan would not result in a successful return for the Sega business moving forward," Sega explained to Next-Gen. Poor sales of last year's Sega Rally Revo likely encouraged the decision to shut down Sega Racing Studio "immediately," bringing an indefinite halt to purported projects currently in development. Sega has not made public the ultimate fates of the staff members, who include a diverse array of veteran talent, headed by former Colin McRae Rally series producer Guy Wilday, but did add, "Sega would like to stress that there will be no changes within their other internal development studios."

Boy, they didn't give that venture much of a chance, did they?

He said he loved the game. I see no issue with this closing. 1 title in 3 years? And it's a racing game and not KOTOR 3 or Duke Nuke's latest masterpiece (zing)? 60 employees are costing them millions of dollars a year.

it wasn't feature filled, had a handfull of cars and tracks but it played like classic Rally with better graphics and real time terrain deformation. good enough for me.

I like it. When I get my wheel setup I am going to play the hell out of it.

I had fun with the single player, but it suffered from the severe spike in difficulty that part two on the DC had. Later races were more frustrating than they should have been. Online was full of assholes who glitched the shit out of it too.

Yeah, its a great game, but it its light on features. I feel that the fun factor is worth $60, but others may disagree. It should be a must purchase for everyone though, once it hits the $29.99 range.

Its shit like this that kind of pisses me off. The SRR was a decent game but not a purchase for me personally. This studio had some decent talent based off that game. They get one at-bat and they are shut down.

If I would have known this was the end result, I would have bought it just to support them for possible future releases. Yet terrible developers are given good IP's and allowed to create trash and operate with impunity release after release.

This studio has nothing to do with Daytona, Outrun 2, etc so I don't really care. Sega Rally Evo's demo didn't do much for me.

Hey does it say anything about the Initial D arcade games? Cause if those are gone this could really suck...

Don't worry, they have nothing to do with Initial D. There is an Initial D game coming in June or July for PS3. I am importing that for sure.

I like Initial D alot more. But the only ID I have played alot is the PSP version, and it is fantastic.

Cool got worried for a second thats the only arcade game in the last 5 years that I've put more than 5 bucks into. Mainly cause it saves your progress :p

I defineatly enjoyed Revo more than Dirt. I don't get all the love for Dirt, when Revo was an all around better game.

This studio is based in England. They're made up largely of former Codemasters staff.

There is a place here in Chinatown that used to have an ID machine. I played it several times, and that's about it. I am glad PSP got such a great port.

I liked the graphical style of Revo a lot better than Dirt, and I appreciated the fact that the framerate didn't stutter as much as Dirt. However, the controls in Dirt were slightly more refined and that game had a million more options to play around with than Revo. Overall, I think both games are a fairly even match, but I would probably pick up and play Revo befor Dirt any day.

The demo was awesome, but I don't think many people actually got the game.

That's not surprising. I recall that Sega poached a lot of Codemasters staff when forming Sega Racing Studio.

Still, definitely good news for racing fans.

Revo is pretty awesome, but I have to consider the crowd here. You're all going to pick up the 50 cent Mario Kart complete with cheap piece of plastic instead anyway. good times

Glad to see they get a second chance

I bought Revo for $20 so pick it up and give it a shot. The game is awesome, looks great, and although it's not 60fps, it runs a smooth, locked-in 30 (or so it appears).

I've seen it drop a couple of times when all the cars are right next to each other in certain parts of tracks (360 vers), but it's about as good as I've seen 30 FPS. I was hoping to have the wheel tonight, but I won't get home in time to pick it up, so I have to wait until tomorrow ;/

It really shouldn't have been 60 dollars. Not that I was disappointed with paying it, but rather it's a hard sell to people these days if it doesn't have a billion cras or tracks or isn't names Need for Speed.

Actually I'm getting Mario Kart anyway. I had a couple useless games and Gamespot was having a deal. $10 for Mario Kart? Eh, why not?

Rally Revo just wasn't my kind of game. I gave the demo a shot and just couldn't get into it. What I really want is another Rallisport Challenge.
