did anyone read how fielding is automatic and you just waggle the controller to do it? or that a lot of the input commands didn't even work when demo'ed.

Previously revealed as "Super Mario Stadium Baseball" last October, and now apparently dubbed, Mario Super Sluggers, the Wii sequel to Mario Superstar Baseball has been confirmed for US release, likely later this year. Nintendo briefly demonstrated the game today at a media summit in San Francisco, IGN reports. As expected, the majority of gameplay is controlled by flicks and waggles (think: Wii Sports' baseball with shaky fielding), but some of the demonstrator's motions were "unrecognized by the game," IGN observed. "Not a very good sign."
In addition to the known cast of playable characters, IGN confirms that Sluggers will feature Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Waluigi, Toad, Toadette, and Boo.

One more piece of news: Mario Super Sluggers. Coming to America. "We think that this is going to take these three wonderful areas of Mario, baseball and the unique capabilities of the Wii remote and bring them together in an exciting experience."
NOA's Bill Trinen takes the stage to chat about Mario Super Sluggers. Begins demoing the game. Previews the pitching and hitting mechanics, which are operated by the Wii remote. Gamers will pitch the ball by making a throwing motion with the Wii remote. To add spin to the ball, players simply twist the Wii remote while throwing.
Fielding the ball seems extremely simple. Bill just shakes the Wii remote and the fielders will automatically run toward hit balls. Once a ball is scooped up, he makes a throwing motion and they auto-throw it to the intended base.
Several of Bill's movements have gone unrecognized by the game. Not a very good sign.
Now Bill demonstrates the batting mechanics. When the ball is pitched, he can pull back the Wii remote and make a swinging motion to hit it. Alternatively, he can make a quick jerking movement with the Wii remote to hit the ball -- ideal for players uninterested in making grand movements to play Wii titles.
"Very simple and very approachable. It's based entirely off motion control. It's going to take the Wii Sports crowd and bring them into something that's more of a robust experience," Bill explains.
From seeing the demo in motion, we can confirm the following characters thus far: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Daisy, Bowser, DK, Hammer Bro, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Waluigi, Wario, Toad, Toadette, Shy Guy, and Boo. The two teams in play were the Mario Fire Bats, and the Peach Royals. Trinen promises more information about the game to come -- but not this week.
They will have the controls fixed before release. I would prefer to use the nunchuk to field the ball though.

it would work out great for kids, like Joe mentioned. they could have an easier time playing with people who want to control everything. just offer both.
Fielding sounds like PowerPros.
We all knew the Mario sports games would hit, but I was hoping some of the early games wouldn't necessarily be sequels. We saw Mario Strikers Charged, now Mario Sluggers. I would have loved to see something like Mario Bowling instead, with a code that allows you to roll Toad into the fucking gutter. This would have been a great game to drink beers to.
Personally I'm hoping Sluggers at least has a ball bat mini game where you hit the streets with a ball bat in hand.
Anyone else picking up Slugger(s) today? I've heard some stories about charge pitches/swings occasionally not registering with the Wiimote/Nunchuck (though I think you can use the classic controller for this), and of Hi, I'm Daisy's super swing yielding guaranteed hits, but it otherwise sounds pretty good.
The chemistry between characters carries a little more weight this time around: batting canonically linked characters back-to-back grants items to use on offense. Sticking Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong in the outfield can potentially lead to homerun-robbing team moves. I don't really like the idea of being essentially forced into choosing Good Guys Team or Bad Guys Team to optimize my lineup, but it could be fun.
And Toy Field is back! :)

Thought about picking it up...I'd like to wait for a price drop (but that doesn't exactly happen quickly with Nintendo's stuff).
...no sale. Not that I was really looking to buy it, anyway. But online play might've made me consider it.
Anyway, I'll be surprised if this is better than MLB Power Pros.
Sluggers is the NBA Jam to Power Pros' NBA Live; it's a completely different, arcade-style take on the same sport. But yeah, MLB:PP is better.
Just put Power Pros on the easiest settings and it turns into an arcady home run derby.
I do want to play this but I've still got a sealed copy of Mario Superstar Baseball for the cube sitting on my shelf.

BATTING: Namco has adopted a bit of the Power Pros hitting philosophy, implying a dynamic cursor-based system. Like Power Pros, you can swing for contact, or you can swing for power. Naturally, a contact swing has a bigger cursor than a power swing. To swing for contact, you simply flick the Wiimote forward. To begin a power swing, you first pull back on the wiimote, which will trigger the cursor to gradually shrink before expanding again as the batter charges up, then flick forward to complete the swing. The smaller the cursor is when you swing, the farther the ball will potentially travel. Hitting it dead-center while the cursor as at its absolute smallest is a homerun, but with all of the crazy shit you can do with pitching, it's a lot harder to go yard than it was in Mario Baseball.
Another Power Pros-inspired quirk: the size of the cursor varies from character to character. I think the speed at which the power swing cursor collapses/expands is player-specific as well.
PITCHING: The flick for normal, pull back+flick for charge approach to batting applies here, too. Unlike the GC game, you can pitch from of any point of your charge animation to throw off a hitter's timing at the expense of the maxed-out velocity of a fully charged pitch. Use the nunchuk to put horizontal movement on the ball -- some characters can utilize this to a ridiculous level -- and/or hold A while pitching to throw a changeup that would drop the jaw of even pre-Mets Pedro Martinez or pre-Mets Johan Santana.
FIELDING: Almost everyone has a special defensive move this time around: Wario can gun a frozen rope to home plate from the outfield, some of the Kongs can scale the wall, etc. Chemistry comes into play all over the place. For example, relaying a cut-off throw from one affably-associated character to another will yield a super fast relay throw to the infield.
TOY FIELD: Has been totally reworked and is fucking amazing. You can now launch items at/melee attack other players, and the blue shell has been removed. The option to play 2-on-2 instead of being forced into a four player free-for-all is certainly a welcome addition.
BAD SHIT:
ADVENTURE MODE: Is an improvement, but still a joke. Way too much dialogue and bullshit. I suppose it serves as a sufficient (if boring) tutorial, though. Perfunctory.
CLASSIC CONTROLLER: Is not compatible. Oops!
GRAPHICS: Are truly horrible.
