I'm guessing his recent promotion, somehow pulled him away from creative input with the magazine. It was probably Ziff-Davis creating a clean break, so that the advertisers would stick around.

I hope beyond hope that he somehow takes over Play.

Not that I read anything of his recently, but yeah Shoe was my favorite game mag writer.

Yeah, he was pretty much the face of Ziff's integrity crusade. This makes me worry that those days are over and Ziff is now poised to go the way of Gamespot, his statement that he left of his own accord notwithstanding.

Leaving on his own accord = resignation. Don't read into it that it was completely his idea.

Now that you mention it, maybe this was part of ZD's "restructuring."
